What I couldn’t figure out, is how an American could be off by as much as three orders of magnitude in this. But then again, I shouldn’t go overestimating people’s abilities.

Jizyah is only part of the story. Not only was it an incredibly crushing tax in most cases, but it was to be delivered to the Muslims with groveling and the Muslims would hit whoever was giving it on the back of the head to humiliate them.
In addition, non-Muslims were not allowed to build churches or synagogues and were not allowed to repair existing ones. The men were to shave the front part of their heads. Non-Muslims were not allowed to ride horses (donkeys only) and had to house a Muslim for three days upon demand. They were to wear special articles of clothing identifying them as dhimmis.
