A Strong Squat, Brutal Bench Press, Dauntless Deadlift, and Massive Military press are as easy as 5/3/1

If you really want to SPECIALIZE your back, I’d suggest doing a bodybuilding day like Bug suggested. On top of that, do eccentric-less training maybe twice a week. It’s really easy to make your own sled out of an old tire and some blast straps. Throw some plates in it from your power rack and you’re golden

This will also increase your work capacity. Double win!
Thanks  I’ll definitely be throwing in a back/bi day. I can imagine the funny looks I’d get pulling a tire with weights on it down the street haha.

I’m the same way as far as finding a “groove” on bench. Usually my 3rd or 4th set feels easier than my first, just due to getting into it.

Holy volume. That’s like 9 sets on both squats and bench. Nice Squats!
Funny thing is I didn’t think it was that much volume haha. And thanks, but I’ve got a ways to go before my squat can be deemed ‘nice’.

Itching to lift on Monday. This past week I’ve been pretty giddy whenever I receieved the email from the PL coach for the next day’s workout haha. A weekend full of sleep and food has got me ready for the coming week.

I decided to do some OHPing and cleaning.

Sunday 5/1/11

Military press
somexsomex135 (haven’t done OHPing in what seems like forever, so it was nice to do some)

Clean ‘n’ jerk, press, get it over my head
a fewx135
1x155 (this was much easier than I thought it’d be)
1x185 (hellz 2 da yeah) PR

I was pretty stoked to be able to clean 185, slapped a smile on my face when I strict pressed 185  I guess my new OHP max is 185.

Very exciting clean 'n jerk. 185 is awesome, and you got a new OHP max out of it. Awesome.

Very exciting and awesome :). Pressing 185 was pretty easy actually lol.

Thanks man, I appreciate it.

For the lulz. I used to have hawt abzz back in 08.

Haha, damn man you’ve put on some size! Great work

I like your “clean and jerk, press, get it overhead” lol. That’s exactly how I do it. That was actually the name of our event for the strongman competition: something like “185 Anyway Overhead” lol.

Haha gotta love looking back at old pictures of yourself.

Most definitely haha and thanks.

Lol, as long as it gets overhead.

Oh yeah haha. To think I actually thought I wasn’t puny back then lol.

Monday 5/2/11

Squat
somexsomex135
1x5x155
1x4x185
2x3x215
4x2x245

Bench press
somexsomex95
1x5x135
1x4x160
2x3x185
4x2x215

RDL
6x135
6x185
6x205
6x225
6x245

Floor press
5x135
5x155
5x185
5x205
5x225

Decent session, although I was sort of thrown off by today’s wacky weather. Low to mid 50s, cloudy, and wet. Bleh.

Tried to find that sweet spot for holding the bar while squatting, so that was kind of annoying not being able to find it. Otherwise the squats were decent.

Benching was ok. Right elbow still feels a little weird mainly when pressing off the chest. But on the bright side it feels better for the most part. After doing the floor presses, I may consider just doing floor presses if my elbow is still feeling funky. In the meantime I’ll keep on icing, foam rolling and massaging.

With the RDLs I need to make sure to really arch hard and use my lats for stabilization. Otherwise my lower back will fatigue too quickly and won’t be able to work the hammies and glutes.

You look better now =)
And that’s pretty awesome, you were tiny lol

For RDLs I like to think about keeping my shoulders in a line during the descent. No way to NOT feel it in the hammies/glutes.

Awesome session, great numbers.

Haha thanks, I think so too

And thanks again haha, although the numbers leave a lot to be desired in terms of how they felt. I’m hoping the increased frequency of doing the big 3 will help me get closer to nailing technique and what not.

I just want everyone to know that AC is sitting here next to me in my apartment.

naked.

The whole thing with my PL coach giving me workouts isn’t really working out, so I’m just going to pick up where I left off with 5/3/1

Lol, this thread has taken a serious turn.

5/3/1 is win.

Looks like they always come crawling back to 5/3/1!
