A Strong Squat, Brutal Bench Press, Dauntless Deadlift, and Massive Military press are as easy as 5/3/1

Nice front squats.

I can’t imagine doing FS with a clean grip, for the wrist reason. I’ll love to try, because the cross grip is super annoying, but I’m a baby.

Haha thanks. The wrist pain is a little annoying, but I don’t mind it too much. Plus it looks cool doing FS with a clean grip :P.

Front squats are looking noice. Good stuff buddy

Thanks man  Although there really isn’t anything to look at per se haha.

Nice front squats sir! Clean grip hurts my wrists but it is something your wrists get used to. Using that grip I feel it ALOT more in my quads. I just have to get used to it.

Great job dude!

Well I do have you to thank for giving front squats a try :). I just feel more stable and tight when I use a clean grip.

Just watched some videos regarding push press technique. I’ll probably do some push presses tomorrow and put what I watched into effect.

I basically want to keep my chest up and minimize the time it takes for my hips to dip and drive up. Kind of like how you’ll make a ball bounce higher if you quickly throw it on the ground as opposed to slowly guiding it to the ground then releasing it (if that makes any sense).

Which video’s did you watch? And random question, do you have any experience with oly lifts such as cleans?

I just searched for push press technique videos on youtube. I mainly found stuff from CrossFit haha. But it was useful.

No I actually don’t have any experience with the oly lifts. If you’re asking if I had them taught to me by a coach. Although it’d be awesome to find a coach and learn them and put up decent weight :).

Why do you ask?

Pretty much out of curiosity. Looking to incorporate cleans and/or push presses cause they would help with power in lacrosse, explosiveness and strength. Maybe ill try out push presses today as I am hitting shoulders :stuck_out_tongue:

They are worth a shot. If anything you’ll found out if you like or don’t like them.

Yeah, time to watch some vids on form!

I tried to do the front squats with a clean grip in honor of you… I failed. Got to 65, then when I had 95 on there, I said screw it, and did the crossover hands thingy

Also did push presses. Not in honor of you, it was in my workout, but I still thought of you lol
My push presses are crap, so don’t look at them ;(

Aqua, I used to use a clean grip too. Your wrists get sore as fuck for a while but they get used to it. I started the cross BB style grip though b/c some big guys at my gym told me that eventually when you’re FSing a LOT of weight, there’s a point when your wrists can’t keep up. Good work lately man, don’t let school stress you out! When I’m at school I get frustrated a lot - statistics, logic, etc…But yeah, good stuff overall!

Funny that you’ve switched to the push press from the strict press, because I’m planning on it, too. I want 225 sometime later this year, but first is 200. :stuck_out_tongue: I came close about 3 to 4 months ago with a close miss with 190 (hey, I still threw the weight somewhat up there :P).

But enough about my boring self, GL on your goals. Oh btw, are you still doing 5/3/1?

Friday 2/11/11

Squat (these were low bar, going to stick with these and get used to it)
Worked up to a few triples w/ 245 to get used to the bar positioning.

DB bench press
1x10x50
1x10x60
1x10x70

Push presses
Worked up to 135, wasn’t really feeling it. I guess the combo of squats and DB presses earlier didn’t help much.

Today was pretty much a deload session. Most of this week was practically a deload. But I’ll finally get back on track starting this weekend and start moving heavy weight.

While squatting I experimented with hand placement. The closer I had my hands the more strain placed on my wrists. I eventually settled on a wider placement that didn’t take a toll on my wrists. But my upper back didn’t feel as tight, I’ll just have to work on that. I don’t know if it’s weird that my wrists were in more pain with my hands close using a low bar placement compared to clean grip front squats.

I’m really digging DB bench presses. I could really feel a stretch in my chest. All that’s left to decide is if I’ll be doing more 5x10 or 5x5. I’ll probably do more volume when I do singles. Regardless as Wendler would say, “Don’t major in the minors”.

Man can’t wait to start hitting the heavy weight!!!

Haha well I’m…honored…haha. No worries, to each their own. Front squatting is front squatting.

Don’t sweat it on the push presses. I gave 'em a another shot today just for the hell of it, and it just wasn’t in me today.

Oddly enough my wrists feel A LOT more strain while doing low bar back squats than when I do clean grip FS, but only when I keep my hands close on the back squats.

Well as of now I’m digging the clean grip as opposed to the crossed arms version. I figure if Oly lifters can put up decent numbers with a clean grip, I might as well try while it’s working for me. Thanks for sharing that info!

Yeah I’ll try haha. But I guess I just blow things out of proportion at times.

I appreciate you dropping in man  Don’t be a stranger.

Haha yeah. It appears that there has been a push press revolution on T-Nation.

I’m sure you’ll be hitting 200 and then 225 in no time! I myself can’t wait to hit a 2 plate push press. There’s just something about putting something over you head, especially when it’s heavier than you haha.

Thanks man, you keep on pushing yourself.

Well the past few weeks I’ve been on a deload/testing maxes phase. But I’m going to start 5/3/1 this Saturday/Sunday. I’m actually going to be making a few changes. I’ll be adding heavy singles and triples to get me more prepared for PLing. Wendler mentioned a way to change 5/3/1 a little to tailor it to PLers.

I really wish I can handle the clean grip, the crossover just feels like I’m trying to choke myself.
I know the wrists get used to it, so maybe I should suck it up.
You know me, complaining over everything

The push presses still look awesome to me.
I like DB bench too, just keep the BB around for ego purposes lol
