A Story: The Past, Present and Future

Jethro Tull fan eh Nate? Good lad[/quote]

haha yeha, been trying to expand from metal, i love alot of prog music and i just needed to find the good stuff

Been getting my jethro tull on, nekktar is good, king crimson, and some of the newer prog metal is just fanatastic, like opeth or BTBAM.

got any bands i should know?

Also, i saw in the iunjury forum we may have a similar shoulder/neck problem when u mentioned armpit pian.

Whats your ‘injury’ list like? And how are you combating them?

if you like a bit of psychedelia, check out “The Apple Pie Motherhood Band”. They’ve got some belters.

long post warning

my shoulder problems stem from a fucked up infraspinatus, and my physio tells me my rhomboids are “crazy”. Means every now and then I have to take a couple of weeks off pressing. It’s actually really bad just now and I haven’t pressed in over a month. Getting ART done every now and then and training the absolute shit out of my upper back and serratus to try and correct it. It’s a slow process but I’m getting there. I hope to be pressing with dumbells by the end of August.

My back is the main problem though, a childhood/early teens playing computer games every hour of the day gave me the worst posture you can imagine, so now I have all the classic deficits you’d imagine: forward head posture, anterior pelvic tilt, protracted shoulder girdle, the works basically. I’ve pretty much fixed my posture, however the old injuries remain and I have the flexibility of a breadstick.

My back’s actually been a problem since long before I ever started lifting, the first time it went out I was 16 and it was in maths class. The bell went for the end of the period and I couldn’t move! Pretty embarrassing, obviously my mates thought it was hilarious. When I discovered lifting weights I did the usual dumbass things, and pretty much ruined myself trying to deadlift with atrocious form. Every now and then my back goes out and I can’t move for 3 days or so.

It’s slowly getting better though, I actually squatted for the first time in about 3 years the other day after discovering that I can do a box front squat (2 second pause) pain free. Worked up to a mighty 70k (about 150lbs for you yanks) for 3! Ooh yeah. Feels good to be able to squat without pain though, and I reckon the strength’ll come back pretty quickly (I can actually lift more on one leg than I can on 2 now!), especially now I’ve discovered steroids, lol. I’ve resigned myself to probably never pulling a deadlift from the floor ever again (I can hip thrust like a motherfucker though!).

So there you go, unfortunately I don’t have a cool story about my injuries like you do, they basically stem from a childhood spent being a 130lbs little pussy.

How are you going about trying to fix your shoulder?

dayum!

Well, my neck spasms started way back in elementry school, i would get a neck spasm just turning my head sometimes and not be able to turn to either side for a couple days. Then in highschool i played a year of football and had alot of colliions which just felt it compressed the fuck outta my neck and my traps would be so stiff i couldnt look anywhere for days. Then during track that year my shoulder popped during a throw, later than summer it popped again doing db presses. I found it was a sublex, but i didnt do much else to look into. I did all the rehab i was given and felt good…but i still got the neck spasms. Then i couldnt lift 5lbs with my right arm about a year later so i got that checked out… turns out i pinched a nerve in the brachial plexus (sp?)
and the rehab for that was rest lol.
Well, i looked into the mckensie method eventually, that helped alot, started doing just neutral grip bench, working the fuck outta my back, but making sure i could actually contract the muscle properly as i had lost control over my right side from the nerve injury. Then i started doing alot of shoulder prehab shit, Y’s T’s A’s etc… rotations, prone holds, and so on. These helped alot. Now i can bench decently often, but i try not to do to much flat pressing with a bar.
Shoulder presses actually helped somehow, something about doing a movement i hadnt done in years ( i was told not to shoulder press) helped balance me out again.
Its pretty good now, but it still flares up, and my neck still gets super tight sometimes or my biceps feel a lil strained.

For my back, kinda the same story and i was with you after last year i said i would never dl again. I also never squatted either. Then i just did a shit load of single leg work, core work and stability shit, and also lots of extra long ROM on exercies like lunges, using a plate to make it deeper, help stretch my hips with weight i think really helped cement my current level of flexibility and mobility. I kinda applied the same thing to my shoulder, really long cable flys from a bench to help my pec and shoulder learn how to move thorugh a full range again.

Right now im kinda stuck, i have low pain levels most of the time, but things like picking up wood and stacking it, weedwacking and other shit like that all kill my back way more than lifting.

Right now i wanna keep getting stronger on omstly front box squats, as like you, they feel fine for some reason haha, and sumo deads. Those also usually feel great. Along with keeping up with all the single leg bullshit and core.

I try to ice at least once a day on my shoulder and back, that helps alot and i take alot of joint supps like glucosimine, MSM, fishoil.

hmmmmm, do you have any rehab exercises or tid bits from your neck/back?
What exercises do you do for you traps/mid back and lats to help balance them?
Whata re you doing for core/legs?

sounds like you’ve got it bad mate, that’s what you get for being the all-American football hero!

How much do you think stuff like glucosamine helps? I read an interesting study on ergo log (that’s a really interesting website by the way, if you’ve never seen it before you should check it out) about collagen supplementation being good for joints, but you need like 10g a day of collagen for 6 months to see the benefit. I reckon drinking collagen would be pretty rank too… I use fish oil but I’ve never really noticed any effect from it. I don’t expect you ever would really, I just know that shit’s good for me so I chug it down.

I don’t do anything fancy really in terms of rehab stuff for my shoulder, it’s just a case of dropping pressing and training the shit out of my upper back with bread and butter moves like chins and rows. I do stuff like face pulls, YTWLIs and all that shit too. Because it’s my rhomboids that are overactive and causing my shoulder problems, I’m trying to strengthen up my serratus (it’s an antagonist for the rhomboids) which is something I’ve never really tried so I’m hoping that’ll be the missing piece of the puzzle. Whoever thought that your fucking rhomboids could be overactive? Madness. The Dieselcrew have got some awesome stuff for shoulder rehab, and I incorporate a lot of their rehab/prehab exercises as fillers into my routine.

One thing I’ve found that really makes a difference is this stretch:

took me a couple of goes to get the angle right to feel the stretch in the right place but it definitely makes a difference. I can get some short term relief by getting a hockey ball (field hockey, obviously) and getting it up into my armpit by lying on it. I internally and externally rotate my arm on that bad boy and it hurts like fuck but I feel great afterwards. Doing that before a workout can usually get me pain free.

It’s weird how those box front squats seem to work eh? I guess it must be because you stay so upright doing them. My gym has just bought a plyo box which is the perfect depth for me so I’m enjoying leg training again for the first time in years! My leg routine is a John Meadows routine that has you pre-exhausting your hamstrings before squatting, which I think is a good idea because it’ll keep spinal loading down a bit from using less on the squats. Maybe that happens, I don’t know. I can also RDL if I keep the ROM fucking tiny.

as for core I just do things like jacknives, rollouts, and Pallof presses. I don’t really give core work the love it deserves to be honest.

I think that if I can keep squatting pain free for the next month or so, I might give sumo deads a try, you’ve inspired me Nate!

Ha glad i could inspire ya man! But yeah…should do more heavy core work  it seriously is like a life saver. Try some heavy front squat holds, contact twists, rkc planks, and look into some pilattes techniques for real.

Also if you havent tried reverse lunges standing on a plate or two, definitely give those a shot and i think youll find youll feel pretty comfortable in the hips and back region.

That shoulder stretch is pretty good, i like it, so thank you hahah

O and yes, i do think the joint supps help alot actually. Especially with my elbow lol. It really decreases the cracking and pain.

On a side note, did alot of sprinting and some suicides yesterday…almost died.

re: the core work - the front squats are actually hammering my core, damn core’s fatiguing before my legs do!

anyway I had a bit of an epiphany tonight I thought I’d share. I dunno if you’ve ever seen the thing were you put two hockey balls (or lacrosse balls or whatever) in a sock? It’s called a “bean”, apparently…

Well I did that tonight and really got it up into my upper back, just around the mid traps/rhomboids etc and my neck (which has been stiff for like the last 4 months!) now feels really good and loose. Better than it has in months. I’m going to start doing that every day, and especially before training. I may actually invest in a couple of lacrosse balls, as the hockey balls are quite big and I think I could do with the contact points being slightly closer together, if you see what I mean.

I figured you might want to try it, given your recurring neck problems.

Cheers

That is 30-60 in km’s. Nice work bro. Do you ride often, or is it just a random thing?

Fuji bikes are nice. I was looking at one when I was buying my new bike.

last summer i rode alot due to injuries, this summer i havent ridden much at all although i honestly might take the last few weeks of summer off from lifting and just ride a bit, feelin pretty beat up and low right now.

During the school year ill hopefully be riding every week or two, its really fun i just hate how much time it eats up. Its like a minimum of 2 hours if i wanna get a good workout in riding, cuz im not a sprinter on the bike. i just like distance.

yesterdays bench session:

Incline Pin press
70x5
110x5
160x5
200x2
230x1
250x0
160x12

No support overheadpress ss with bent laterals
70x20/15’sx20|x3

bunch of back tricep and other shit dont feel like typing. Feeling super shitty laterly despite sleeping and eating alot. fuck.
