I think you’re kind of missing the point.
JB is talking about feel and perception, not the 20/20 vision of hindsight and inspection.

Let’s pretend for a moment that Arnold could run for president. Let’s also pretend he was running on a platform of something unquestionably immoral, such as deporting everyone with a BMI over 30 to Canada and legalizing exploitative child labor. How much of the T-Nation vote would he still manage to pull?
“Well, he does support some reprehensible policies… but man, does he still look JACKED or what?”
I say 60%.
Well, seeing this is how the majority of people vote, I’d say you aren’t far off.
Face it, 90% of the country is going to vote for the letter next to the name (45% D, 45% R) even if Satan was on the ticket. The 10 or so percent that are actually independent and don’t just claim to be… Well yeah… They decide the leaders of the free world.

Hindsight and inspection? I’m not sure what you mean.
JB said HW had a wimpy personality compared to Reagan. Bush is a seasoned combat veteran. Reagan was an actor. Bush was a high ranking diplomat. Reagan I engaged in provocative and bellicose rhetoric against the USSR. Bush was DCI. Reagan had little interest in foreign affairs. If being a “Cold Warrior” in talk only makes Reagan I a stud and Bush a wimp, so be it.

What I’m trying to say is you are missing the point because you are basing your (accurate) assessment on facts and hindsight. You are inspecting the paths and actions of the men in a vacuum of retrospect.
JB is commenting on what it felt like while you were there living it. What the perception, gut reaction was. Which, as I’m sure you are aware, is often different, and can be vastly different than reality, particularly when there is a cultural influence.
I didn’t like his policies by George II seemed like he kept himself in pretty good shape as well, especially considering his age and … profession? I imagine the time crunch is pretty hard in the White House, and the stress levels are unimaginable, so I give him credit for that.

Correct. I’ve met GB I. He’s a big, impressive, guy.

But he came across as a wimp.

Must be a cultural thing. Texans like to name our wine, streets, and libraries after him.

You still don’t get it. He was a fine president and a great man.
His image, however, was wimpy.
Bush I readily admitted he failed in this, and that’s why Bush II carefully cultivated a “tough guy cowboy” persona.

This is true.
JB, I had read someplace that despite W’s aww shucks persona he was a very cunning person and able to read and manipulate very well. Any thoughts on that statement?

Depends who is in the WH. Up until recently POTUS began his day around 7 or earlier and many Presidents worked until the early hours of the morning. These days it’s a 10-10:30 start and a leisurely round of golf or shooting hoops in the afternoon then dinner and nap time - that is if there’s no fundraising to do, rap stars to hang out with or dangerous radicals to consort with.

Comparing a first pitch come on. You mean Obama throws worse than a guy from Texas who grew up playing baseball and loves the game enough to be a part owner of one? Who would have fucking guessed.
Obamoa’s first pitch was worse than a crippled women tripping on acid. It was pathetic anyway you cut it.
I’ll give him credit for being able to hit the rim, but his basketball shot is equally terrible.

to be honest, he looks (understandably) tired and partisan bickering aside, I give him credit for at least showing up given his current job. But good lord does he look like a bitch.

My meetings with Bush II have been pretty short, less than 10 minutes. I’ve met most of the recent presidents (including Obama) and candidates because they tend to come to my firm and various groups I am in looking for money.
Bush II is no dummy, just a really bad public speaker.
He remembered my name and a bit about my family (e.g., my first wife having been killed) and it had been 5-6 years since we had met. He seemed pretty sharp and also genuine. No idea if he has a good memory or some aid who takes notes for him and tells him who is who and what is what before meetings.
Is this manipulative? Or just really strong people skills?

I guess it depends on how he uses his skills.
Or is he a Cylon?
