A Cheerful Misanthrope

Ouroboro, good luck to your competitor. You’re a classy lady, no matter how hard you try.

Yes, I’ve been doing this with a hook grip. It isn’t a lot of weight but I find it hard with a snatch grip.

I couldn’t not help when I have received so much help from a lot of people. That’s one of the things I’ve found remarkable about this sport. Besides, I’m not doing this meet, she’s a lovely lady and I’d like to think someone would do the same for me.

Talk about a complete FML day she had with the car stolen with the gear 2 nights before a meet.

I have an early report from the meet. I’ll let Ruggerlife tell his story. Apparently all my gear got it’s masters total without me :frowning:

I’m happy for my competitor but would have preferred that I was wearing the gear when the total was gotten.

11 weeks to the Ottawa and I’ll get mine wearing my stuff.

I am happy for her. She’s a very nice lady, a good lifter and has been doing this longer than me, so good on her.

She’s pretty much as spazzy as you are when you compete… only thing is she listens. She said she was going to tell you I was bossy (ie. “Anita - sit down”) and I said that wouldn’t be news to you or anyone else.

I ended up running her numbers. She hit all 3 squat attempts, nothing spectacular, but solid. Hit her opener bench then tried for 85 twice (but missed) which would beat her own national record of 82.5. Her pulling was alright as well. Slipped on the baby powdered platform on her second attempt so just went for a light deadlift again on her third to hit masters.

She’s a great lady and I got some serious action in today, what with adjusting her boobs and sticking my hands up her singlet to pull her shirt down.

Rugger can tell his story on my log or yours. The abbreviated version: he fucked up his bench, thereby setting him up to pull for the world to hit his total. He did really well though and will put up some awesome numbers once he gets in some gear! Now he just has to come to Belle River or Ottawa with us.

Oh and then we went to Mongolian Grill for dinner (20 of us, mostly Niagara people, wives/girlfriends, myself and Rugger) and it was glorious. That’s my story…I’d write about it on my log, but you can all read about it here instead

I’m really not certain if the last set was 12 because I was listening to my no-name boyfriend tell me about how he shaves his entire body but won’t wax because it would hurt too much. He said he’d rather be hit in the face than wax. I told him I’d punch him in the face and then quickly rip his hair out. I think he liked that.

This evening I went out for a birthday dinner with my daughter and when I got home there was a message from a local lifter. One of the women competing in the same meet as Ruggerlife had her car stolen last night with all her gear in it.

She’s in my weight class. In fact, she’s one of two other women in the country in my age/weight class. I’m loaning her all my gear for the meet tomorrow. She just left with my squat suit, belt and wraps. Court will bring my shirt with her tomorrow.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for her.[/quote]

Thats pure class that is.

The really short version is I screwed up and missed my total.

For entertainment purposes, here’s a summary of the individual screw-ups and the lessons learned (too put a positive spin on it)"

  1. First screw-up happened a couple months ago, when I hadn’t considered which weight class I should lift in and left it to April 1 to decide to lift at 165lbs when I was weighing 185lbs (actually 188 as you’ll see in point #2).

  2. I waited until ~9-10pm on Friday night to check to see if my scale was correct. To my surprise it was ~3 lbs off! So rather than being ~2lbs over at that point, I was 5lbs over!!! By midnight (after a long very hot bath), my scale was showing a light 165lbs (so about 167.5-168). At 5:00am, my scale shows…a light 165lbs. I lost nothing over the night including the morning pee?

So off to St. Thomas, which is about 1h 30-45mins away. Since I like to be early I head out at 5:30am with the intention of checking my weight on the meet scale before weigh-ins. In order to drop the weight I drove wearing a fleece and my heavy winter coat and a hat and the heater cranked.

3.At 8:00am (weigh-in time), I call Court to ask her where the meet is, since I have the wrong address. Doh! Fortunately it was only 5 minutes away. (Thanks Court) When I get there the scale is being used for the womens weigh-in. Then the men have to wait until about 8:30am.

Weigh-in at 74.8kgs (It was actually fluttering between 74.8 and 74.9 but he just said 8). That was a relief since there was no time to cut any weight at this point since lifting was starting at 10:00am.

Funny side story. I almost ended up a very light 100kg lifter since they wrote my weight down as 94.8, not 74.8! Court came to the rescue and had them fix it. I almost had to re-weigh in and I would have been over at that point. (So once again, thanks Court)

On to lifting

Squat warm-ups felt good. Took my opener (140kgs), not really any problem. Went for 150kg on second and it was a bit of a grind but it came OK. Then Court submitted 500kgs for my third and I went down and stayed there. OK, actually it was only 155kg, but it may as well have been 500kg.

  1. Apparently, my concerns about depth were warranted…but not in the way I thought. I was told I was going too deep! Fuck me, could I have judged my depth any worse?

I was also told the take my stance out a little (like 3-4 inches). I already knew this, but I couldn’t get it to work in the last couple weeks so I went with what felt comfortable.

  1. Bench. [Hangs head in shame] Opened with 105kgs, felt easy. Warm-ups also felt really good. Then jumped to 115kgs. I’ve hit this 3 times in a row in training (actually ~116.5kgs), with more work sets leading up. Miss. Retake. Miss.

So now I need a 200kgs pull to get my 455 total. In January I pulled 175kgs and that was a ~15kgs PB.

Open with 170kgs. Went up easy. This was really just a final warm-up. This also secured 1st place…since I was the only lifter at 75kgs.

Next we went with 182.5kgs. This went fairly easy, no real strain. Then it was all chips on the table 200kgs. I started to pull and I didn’t think it was going to budge, then it came off the floor and started up fairly quickly.

Unfortunately it stopped, dead, around my knees. I kept pulling but it wouldn’t move. It seemed like an eternity and I recall thinking, “Drive through with your hips”…and I try to drive through, but nothing moves. Then I was thinking “arch back harder”…and I tried that. Eventually after about 2hours I set the bar down.

So I missed my total. Came away with a PB of 7.5kgs in the deadlift and 2.5kgs on my total at a lower weight class, a really good dinner and a chance to see Court feel up another woman.

Thanks again for all your help Court. Yes she can be bossy, but in a sweet way. I was also on the receiving end of a “Sit down”. Then I think my twitching was making her nervous so she sent me to the corner to pace around.

Sorry for the long post, but it’s not easy to summarize this many miscues.

Great report, Rugger! I want Court to handle me some time!

Rugger that’s awesome, you had a great handler too. I’m hoping for some pics and vids, of both you and Court feeling up chicks.
So what’s next for you, I am assuming you met your qualifying numbers for the provincials later this year as well.
Great job, now relax in the aftermath, it’s the part of the best part of a meet.

“Uhhh Court, do you have the address?”
“Umm yeah, it’s at a highschool called “x” but I have it on my gps so don’t know exactly where it is”
“Okay I’ll ask at this gas station”

Court gets off the phone with Rugger, calls one of the Niagara guys to confirm the name of the highschool:
“Is the highschool called “x”?”
“Ummm, I don’t know I just have the address in my gps. Why?”
“Cuz my handlee is retarded and wrote the address down wrong”
“HAHAHAHAHAH It’s after 8…he’s supposed to be there for weigh-ins”
“I know. We’ll figure it out”

I approach the desk and tell the meet director his weight is wrong. He says he’ll have to weigh-in again. I find the OPA president who did the weigh-ins and also make the comment "He lifted as an 82.5 for Niagara and cut for 75.

He weighed in at 74.8 and has eaten since". OPA president (whether he actually remembers or just trusts me since he’s a Niagara guy) says “I remember he was 74.8”. All is good.

You forgot to mention Stan saying if he was reffing he’d red-light you for resting your thighs on your calves. ATG ftw! I did put down 500 but they thought it was a misprint so just went 155. I tried!

Hoi tried to convince me to go only to 110/112.5. Rugger wanted 115 and felt good about it, so we did it. After the 2nd lift (which SUCKED!) he looked at me and said “I’m not going to say I told you so, but…” and I told him to eff off. The 3rd attempt was much better, but still not quite enough.

There was serious discussion in the backroom about how to go about with 1st and 2nd attempt to even get close to completing the 200kg pull. I think the way we did it worked as well as it was going to.

Pretty sure I lost my voice yelling at you for 5 minutes while you held it at knee height. You wanted it. Everyone wanted you to have it. Just wasn’t happening today. You will get that soon though without a doubt.

She liked it more than I did. She actually preferred it when I had my hands up her singlet. Too bad Andy was around who lifts with her regularly so he was seating her shirt like they normally do. All I got to do then was hold her bra straps at the back of her neck and belt her hahaha.

You’re very welcome Rugger  You were a good listener. Your twitching was just making you nervous so I sent you to pace. It was funny when I came back to find you when you were still like 8 lifters out and you were in the far corner of the warm up room walking in circles. I laughed and decided to go watch some more lifts and let you pace a bit longer.

Unfortunately he missed his intermediate qualifier by fucking up his bench.

Hopefully he’ll come party in Niagara, get in some gear, do Ottawa and rock Class I to go to provincials

Unfortunately no, I didn’t manage to qualify for anything. Not sure what to do next, I’ll not worry about it for a couple days and just get back into training and figure it out.

As for pics/vids, I kind of forgot. I only have the second attempt squat…which I will say I managed to cut at a normal depth!

Actually don’t tell Court, but the real reason I missed the last deadlift was because I want my first 200kg pull recorded and I realized when I had the bar halfway up that she forgot. So I set it down. Yeah, that’s what happened. Really.

Anyway, we ended up gabbing for quite a while and had quite an interesting convo that I’ll update you on Monday at GL.

Tomorrow I’m off to Barrie to hang with some old high school girl friends I haven’t seen in years. Before we meet up I’ll be having a coffee with another T-N guy up that way trying to talk him into doing the Belle River meet.

Great work Rugger and Court.

Today I was in Barrie for most of the day. For an hour I had coffee with one of the guys from hear hoping he’ll decide to do the Belle River meet. I’m hoping he will. I’ll do cartwheels if necessary.

The rest of the day was spent laughing with my four best friends from high school. We haven’t all been together in over 10 years and man it felt good. The get together was precipitated by one friend returning for a short visit from the Azores where she is a University professor.

It’s funny how you can slip back into friendships like comfy old slippers. We even managed to cover the time we skinny dipped in the neighbours pool while they were having a party when we were 17. Do you remember being that stupid?

The woman with the red hair is the professor. The blond woman is a teacher (soon to be principal) and the brunette is a nurse. I’m just the roofer chick

Fixed that for ya.

By the way, Jerry was showing off some of the trophies he has arranged for the Belle River meet! THEY ARE REALLY NICE! Let’s just say that they’re worth more than the entrance fee. They’re actually small statuettes (is that a word?).
