A Cheerful Misanthrope

No one does, even Gordon. That’s part of the fun. But while I’ve enjoyed their albums (Phantom Power is truly great), I’ve never enjoyed their live shows. It’s Gordon on acid, and the rest get left behind.

As for root beer, the best pizza place in San Diego is also a microbrewery and brews their own root beer. The stuff is nectar. Any of you Canadians make it down here, consider this a standing invitation: I’ll buy.

Rage Against the Machine really helps me move the iron.

Your secret is safe with me. Can’t speak for the rest of Planet Earth that reads this forum, tho!

Who the hell does?? Gordon is safely ensconced in his own world, for sure! One good thing about being 90 minutes from New Orleans is that The Hip plays The House of Blues just about every tour. Very cool to see them in a club setting. Mostly Canadians at the show, plenty of flags and you’ll hear “Oh, Canada” several times from the crowd before the show. Lots of fun.

Neat! Atlantic Canada is special. I’m sure some Canadians will say "Short Bus ‘Special!’ "

FYI, I like my grilled cheese with Jalapenos.

I like mine with Natural Peanut Butter.

I, too, have noticed how many Canadian females are on the forum. At least in the Southern U.S., the vast majority of females who work out are cardio bunnies. You will see them on machines, too, but hardly any doing any real weight training. That being said, you’ll run across some who can move the iron, tho.

I applaud those of you females, wherever you may be, who do train. This is one of my favorite forums because it’s inspiring to read about you gals bustin’ your humps and watching videos of the same. All kidding and innuendos aside, I applaud you. You honestly inspire me.

One guess what I was working on tonight

It’s my daughter’s birthday on Saturday. I bought a new cake tin in a flower shape and am doing a giant chocolate daisy cake with a bright yellow centre and fuscia petals. She’s going to be 14 and just started high school. Already she’s met an older man (15) on the bus. I get to hear all about Brett who I mock and call barette.

It’s kind of an odd feeling having a kid this age… right on the cusp of adulthood. I’ve no doubt it gets odder as they get older. She’s funny as hell and a much nicer kid than I was.

She’s also starting the braces process tomorrow.

Saturday Sept. 27, Gym

All squats all the time.

My intention today was to focus on my squat form particularly getting my hips through in the middle of the squat. I think I made some progress but as I got tired, my focus began to fray.

At the gym, the squat rack is in front of a mirror (like everyones I suppose). I put a large towel over the mirror so I could focus on how the squat feels versus how it looks. I’ve gotten used to squatting at the club where there aren’t any mirrors. A couple of weeks ago when I did some squatting at the gym I found the mirror was bad for my focus.

155x5x1

Mid way through one of my reps at 155, one of the guys from my club showed up. I had told him I would be there and the manager wouldn’t (he sneaks in for free). Since he came, I broke out the squat suit so he could give me form feedback.

suit on, straps down
135x1x3

straps up
155x1x1
175x1x1
185x1x1
195x1x1
205x1x0

By the time I hit 205 I was wiped out. Actually even starting today, the weight felt heavy. It was just one of those days.

I think I can get 205 before too long if I don’t do 50 jillion reps at varying weights first.

With respect to form changes, as the weight goes up, my mind is more on the weight and less on proper form.

For the time being, I think I will lay off the suit now that I know how it feels. I can start actually training with it later.

Of course, this will likely change if I get the other one later this week  I’ll need to take that one for a spin as well.

Nice work on the squats.
I have a soon to be 14 year old daughter too. It is weird. She’s pretty good, but I have no control. At least she comes home before dark.

My daughter recently got a bus pass and now has more freedom. She went to the mall with her friends for the first time on Friday. I wasn’t into the idea since I used to get in trouble when I did the same thing at that age. I try to keep a closer eye on her than my parents did with me. She’s a good kid and a good student. I also find I really enjoy her company as she gets older. She wants to come to Ottawa with me in December. I’ll have to see.

Thanks for the compliment on the squats. I have a lot of work to do though. The other women in my weight range were squatting 225 in London. I won’t be hitting that within the next few weeks but it gives me a target. The other two ladies in the Masters I 56 kg class that will be in Ottawa are considerably stronger than me. I have no hope of beating them particulary given my weak bench but I hope to narrow the gap by a wide margin.

How are you making out on your preparations?

It’s going well, not much to do at this point but the recovery training and drink a shit load of water. I’ve got 4lbs to drop and I’ve never done that before. I got apple cider vinegar tabs and Greens+ today. The greens stuff works great, I used it once before and it flushed out stuff I ate in the high school. I have no idea what I can do with squats, but I’ll shoot for 185-190 for my last attempt at the meet.

My kid has had a bus pass since last year, they start high school in the 7th grade here. She’s a good kid, not much of a follower, she has her own mind. I haven’t seen her since yesterday morning when I dropped her at school, she stayed at her friends house last night and today went to La Ronde (amusement park) and just called to say she’s staying over there again. It’s all about the friends right now. I give her freedom on the weekends, as long as she checks in and is with people I know, it’s all good.

Wasn’t your daughter’s b-day today?

I shudder to think that my precious ‘baby’ boy is more than half way to being a teenager!

Yes. It is today. We went out for dinner last night and did cake and presents. Her dad picked her up at lunch time to spend a few days with him.

The picture is both of my girls and the cake I made. Now I have a lot of orange chocolate cake in the fridge that I have to try not to eat.

Bottom start squat
I’m trying to work through my stork leg sticking point so I was trying bottom start squats. The first couple sets had the bar at hip height. The last set was approx. 1.5" higher.

The first set was rough but once I got the feel for them, they went pretty easily. Next time I’ll up the weight.

This felt awkward today probably because I was all in from my squat extravaganza over the last couple of days so I switched back to conventional.

Can someone help me with a question? I was reading the squat suit reviews in the strength sport section and people mention carryover. What exactly are they referring to?

Essentially how much help you get from the suit (or briefs). So you may squat a certain weight without the suit and some amount more than that with it – the difference is the carryover.

Thanks. That helps. I have ordered an Inzer Z suit and one poster said there was no carryover. I think he referred to it as window dressing. CVB said she got 25-50lbs depending on how tight it was.

MOnday Sept. 29 Gym

So I get to the gym and there were three glove wearing knob gobblers taking turns doing shrugs in our only rack. I’m not sure why it irritated me so much. They were also doing deadlifts with crap form bouncing each rep off the floor. While they were doing their endless shrugging I did my cleans and rows and managed to resist throwing my squat shoes at their collective heads.

I eventually got them to move out. I kept staring and I’m sure they thought I found their display really impressive until I asked them nicely to hurry the fuck along.

It isn’t like it’s my rack. Lately I’m feeling like ‘our lady of perpetual pms’.

At any rate tonights workout:

Power cleans:
95x3x5
100x1x1
105x1x1
110x1x1
115x1x1
120x1x1

Bent over BB rows
95x2x10
100x2x7

jojo boys clear out of the rack. At least they weren’t curling.

Squats - this was more form practice. Its already feeling better with the groove and flow. I covered the mirror again to feel the movement. I’m not sure if I’m over doing this put for me repetition is the key to muscle memory. I find myself doing bodyweight squats at the oddest time just to feel the flow of the movement.

Chin ups

I just thought I would add that despite my bitchiness, I felt very physically on tonight. It’s been a while since I’ve felt that way. I had been at a low cycle since early-mid August and finally feel like I’m pulling up again.

Here’s a question for anyone who can answer it. What is the fundamental difference between glute ham raises and good mornings?

I think Good mornings hit the hammies and spinal erectors, while the glute ham raise targets the hams specifically.

I’m a chin-up hater, btw!
But I can do push ups now

O you are a woman after my own heart. I always find myself wanting to hit people with barbells or throw things at them. My latest is wanting to drop heavy dumbbells on the toes of people who wear flip flops in the gym.

And I’m sure even after you told them to hurry along they still thought you were really impressed by them. Last time I was waiting for a rack I stood with my arms crossed staring at two guys doing 1/4 squats with 225lbs and the ‘spotter’ lifting the bar and the guy up. I know they thought I was impressed because after each set they would turn and look at me and smile. My scowl and “do you have many sets left” caused them to scurry away with their tail between their legs. If I was feeling like a total bitch, I would have added 10s onto each side and done a few squats. However I wasn’t warmed up either

Okay I have done the bitch thing. I haven’t told this story before because I’m not especially proud of it. This was about 6 months ago. I was at the gym waiting for the rack. There was a guy in it squatting 135 for 1/4 squats looking pretty pleased with himself.

When he was between sets I walked into the rack and did a few proper squats and went back to what I was doing. He left shortly afterwards. I’m not sure why I felt the need to be such an emasculating bitch. For all I know he was just starting out and learning.

The gang of guys last night were typical gym douches but after my bitchiness in the above story, I make a concerted effort not to act on it I just write about it at length on a public forum

Hahaha!
I’m glad I’m not alone in this. If a guy is using somethign I need and is using a lower weight then I use I usually go up and ask what he has left and if he could just leave what he has on there, I leave out the part that it is because I still have to warm up… usually :stuck_out_tongue:
I really think that this isn’t so much because I am stronger but simply because I am working at the top limit of what I can do and they have no idea what they could do if they attempted to lift till failure.

I got my new squat suit in the mail today. It’s the Inzer Z size 29. Holy crap is it tight. Once I got it to my knees it was a game of millimetres but I did eventually get it up.

I may try it out tomorrow night but I don’t know if I’m ready for a gang of guys to witness the fun I had tonight. We don’t have any privacy where I train and we change in front of each other. It’s never been a big deal but this may take it to a level a couple of the teenage virgins shouldn’t be exposed to

I will say this much…it isn’t something I’d want to be wearing if I had to pee very badly.
