I think it is a pretty safe bet that if War Machine had been made white in Iron Man 2 there would have been a pretty strong reaction. White superheroes should stay white and black superheroes should stay black.
Don’t like mixing the races do ya? But you are right, I would be pissed because that would be one less black superhero on the bigscreen. All that leaves me with is Shaq in Steel. Is that really what you are proposing???
I think the issue is that there should be parity. I really don’t want to see parts switched around to appease one audience over another but my dollars should be spent representing US both black, hispanic, asian and caucasian.
I agree with Red. Why fuck with what’s known and accepted? The thing is, even for those of us that haven’t followed comics in years, we still remember certain characters as a certain way. I totally support having more black [or Mexican/Latin, Asian, Middle Eastern, whatever] lead superheroes, but the problem with that is it’s going to take awhile for those characters to find a home in the publics mind. That’s what was so cool abut Spawn. I think his first appearance was in '92 or '93, and he caught on like wildfire. That’s rare. Changing a known [and beloved] character just to shake things up is fucking retarded. Let’s establish new characters, build them from the ground up and give them their own movies/tv shows/cartoons.
That is still not guaranteed to work. Superheros have a built in audience who will see the film regardless. The general population is not as forgiving however. There may not be an audience for a big budget superhero film with a black lead character.
If you want to see if a black main character can open a film, look at “Princess and the Frog.” That film did not perform anywhere near as well as expected. There may still be things that are not financially worth doing. The only color that matters to most execs is green.
I’m not saying it’s guaranteed to work just 'cause the character’s not white. I’m saying it would work if the character connects with a large enough audience, regardless of ethnicity. If that Disney movie you referrenced didn’t do as well as expected, I’d like to think that had more to do with it being a shitty flick or bad marketing than with the color of the character[s].
Excuse me, not guaranteed then, but a fighting chance, still probably not. I’d like to think a T.V. series could be green lighted however. The smaller budget might make it happen.
As far as the Disney flick goes, it was critically well received and had a good marketing campaign. The merchandise sold well, the film still underperformed. I was hoping it would do well though.
If you ever visit imdb.com, and want to see some vicious debates, head over to the message board for the film.
