Don’t like mixing the races do ya? But you are right, I would be pissed because that would be one less black superhero on the bigscreen. All that leaves me with is Shaq in Steel. Is that really what you are proposing???

I think the issue is that there should be parity. I really don’t want to see parts switched around to appease one audience over another but my dollars should be spent representing US both black, hispanic, asian and caucasian.
I agree with Red. Why fuck with what’s known and accepted? The thing is, even for those of us that haven’t followed comics in years, we still remember certain characters as a certain way. I totally support having more black [or Mexican/Latin, Asian, Middle Eastern, whatever] lead superheroes, but the problem with that is it’s going to take awhile for those characters to find a home in the publics mind. That’s what was so cool abut Spawn. I think his first appearance was in '92 or '93, and he caught on like wildfire. That’s rare. Changing a known [and beloved] character just to shake things up is fucking retarded. Let’s establish new characters, build them from the ground up and give them their own movies/tv shows/cartoons.
That is still not guaranteed to work. Superheros have a built in audience who will see the film regardless. The general population is not as forgiving however. There may not be an audience for a big budget superhero film with a black lead character.
If you want to see if a black main character can open a film, look at “Princess and the Frog.” That film did not perform anywhere near as well as expected. There may still be things that are not financially worth doing. The only color that matters to most execs is green.
I’m not saying it’s guaranteed to work just 'cause the character’s not white. I’m saying it would work if the character connects with a large enough audience, regardless of ethnicity. If that Disney movie you referrenced didn’t do as well as expected, I’d like to think that had more to do with it being a shitty flick or bad marketing than with the color of the character[s].
Excuse me, not guaranteed then, but a fighting chance, still probably not. I’d like to think a T.V. series could be green lighted however. The smaller budget might make it happen.
As far as the Disney flick goes, it was critically well received and had a good marketing campaign. The merchandise sold well, the film still underperformed. I was hoping it would do well though.
If you ever visit imdb.com, and want to see some vicious debates, head over to the message board for the film.

I think this should successfully debunk any ideas about black leads not being financially viable

Thanks for posting that. That is misleading however, The only black actor who headlined the top films mentioned for himself, is Will Smith. That should be common knowledge by now, and I was surprised he was not higher. The other black actors were supporting characters for their top films. Harrison, Tom, Will and the rest all were the stars of their highest grossers, while Eddie Murphy has been on the decline for over a decade now. Then you factor in the superhero element, and you can see why it would be difficult to get one off the ground with a black lead.
Will Smith even acknowledged this when he talked about possible casting for Captain America.

True enough but Eddie Murphy was a successful lead, Smith still is, Freeman though not a lead in the technical sense is still a major actor.

For whatever reason black superheroes just aren’t as interesting as the white ones why this is, I don’t know. Is it because the writers make them second fiddle or is this because fans don’t connect with them? Its a chicken and egg situation.

I think right now Eddie Murphy is just in it for the money, I watched that horrid excuse for a movie “Meet Dave” and it made me examine my life. The question i kept asking myself…“what has my life come to?” & “Why does Hollywood not put this dude out to pasture?” After Pluto Nash you would think that the movie studio would have sent out a lynching party and sold his kids on the black market to make back some of their money.

He needs to get back to making movies for adults something rated R for christ sake.

After browsing through this blatantly racist list, I realize we need no Peter Parker but a Peter Park or Peter Chang!

A black president?

My God, no way, never!

(1) I don’t care if Spiderman is black or white, as long as they get a Mary Jane who doesn’t look like she’s smelling a fart the whole movie.

(2) Yeah, black people would be pissed if War Machine or another black superhero were changed to be white, and yeah, it’s a double standard, but it’s also justifiable. C’mon, there was a good 40 years of comics where every black superhero was either some form of blaxploitation (“Sweet Christmas!”) or had to be an African witch-princess or some shit. They didn’t start writing race-neutral black characters until the 80s/90s, so if you have to retconn a few in there, I’m fine with that.

(2a) It would be sweet if there was a really blatant honky, trailer-trash superhero. Mullet Man ftw.

(3) That leading man article is ridiculous. Giving SLJ credit for Star Wars is like giving James Marsden credit for X-Men. That article drastically undersells Will Smith, who has been virtually the only actor in a couple of huge movies.

(4) I will be sure that… the lady’s just… like yoooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

I’m only talking Peter Parker. I grew up reading Marvel & DC. And never once do I remember his race being an issue in the comics. His character could and should be played by anyone that fits the outline written by Creator.

And after reading what everyone wrote I still see nothing that says differnt.

Now if we were talking Thor yeah I would be bitching also.

The script should be written and the part should go to who could play it best. (period)

they need to do a shaft remake

They did. Starring Samuel L Jackson.

There are plenty of black superheroes that could have movies, why spiderman. It does not fit into his continuity at all.

DrewH, one black guy is petitioning to play Spider Man. His name is Donald Glover.

He’s funny, likable, and has the physical build of Spider-Man. Looking past the skin color, he could make a great Spider-Man.

If he didn’t fit the role so well, I wouldn’t agree with him being Spider-Man.

it just doesn’t fit to me

The guy from Community, a writer on 30 rock, and a pretty funny comedian. If you’ve seen him on television, he’s pretty funny. He has the wit to be Spider-man. He has the physical build to be Spider-Man. Now as for the range of acting sad…I’m not sure.

He’s petitioning to audition for it and is a pretty good choice.
I read Danny Glover when I first saw this… damnit.
He’s too old for this shit.

You were really serious with this “you people” bullshit? I am one of the first people to stand up and tell someone to shut the fuck up if they talk too much during a movie…and strangely, considering I used to go to the movies around the Galleria area, most of the talkers are WHITE around here…so when the fuck did black people get this label across the board?
You people also don’t know a joke when you see one.
