I was actually waiting for Prof X to rip into him, Wol.
The only reason I wouldn’t necessarily want a black or minority spider man is that if it ends up being accurate to the comic books, that Parker always gets shit on by almost everyone as spider-man (unlike the 3 movies) - except Flash Thompson. I feel like they might play that into a minority thing and fuck it all up.
Anyhow, I’m still pissed that the juggernaut wasn’t a red-head in X-men 3. So fuck you all :-p. When was the last time you saw a superhero with real red hair?
The dude is fucking Hilarious he was a part of a comedy group called Derrick Comedy and had some hilarious clips on youtube:

One more and maybe a little appropriate for this thread?
The producers of Spider Man might have to ask him a few extra questions after seeing this though.

Love it.
I don’t like the idea personally, I don’t see any reason for him to be black. I think it is a pretty safe bet that if War Machine had been made white in Iron Man 2 there would have been a pretty strong reaction. White superheroes should stay white and black superheroes should stay black.

Would I be ruffling feathers if I admitted to having never seen Book of Eli?
Edit: Before I get carved into like Thanksgiving turkey by T-Nations NAACP I want to say I’ve got Shai’s “If I ever fall in love” on in the background, so I can’t be all bad…
Oh gawd, now I’m hearing that BS song in my head.

Don’t like mixing the races do ya? But you are right, I would be pissed because that would be one less black superhero on the bigscreen. All that leaves me with is Shaq in Steel. Is that really what you are proposing???
I think the issue is that there should be parity. I really don’t want to see parts switched around to appease one audience over another but my dollars should be spent representing US both black, hispanic, asian and caucasian.

Haha. Dude, that’s the jam! Is it too much to admit that I followed it up with “I’d die without you”? Guess I’m on an early 90’s sexual chocolate kick…

If there was a black (or asian, or middle eastern, or hispanic, why is the next race ‘after’ white always black?) spiderman, which I think would be stupid for the same reason nobody wants to see a gay spidermen or a fat spiderman, you must know that hollywood would completely butcher this character and offend as many people as possible in a pathetic attempt to be relatable and modern.
They would change things that don’t need to be changed (like his race in the first place, as well as his friends and family, probably Mary Jane, and who knows what else for no reason at all… giving the spider mask a gold grill?). They would make him “talk black”. They would insert “black issues” into the story. It would just be fucking awful.
Does anyone want to see an asian Superman?
How about a middle eastern Wonder Woman?
Call me crazy but if I were black, I would be more offended by these people trying to ‘throw me a bone’ by peppering in some blackness randomly in the entertainment world specifically for the purpose of ‘representing’ me.
I would love to see more original black characters, and more classic black comic book characters being made into good movies… except that holy shit you people are unbearable in the movie theater, god I didn’t pay 9 dollars to hear you laughing and making comments about everything ugh
I have thought the same way in the past about black super hero’s. If I was black, I would be insulted that the only way you could make a white audience accept a black superhero, was by changing an already established white character into a black one. Spawn may be black, but most people don’t know it.
Mcfarlane sells toys that call him “hamburger head” Kind of hard to tell what race he is.

Thank you for bringing up the change of race for Kingpin in the Daredevil film. I was going to bring it up in the Conan thread, but I was in no mood to argue with X about it. Especially after he cited the race of the princess from The Neverending Story. I realized right there that this person could not even begin to tell you the differences between the book and the movie and that it would be pointless to discuss it further.

I noticed how you brought up the first Conan thread here. I recall you saying that some of us were trying to “goad” X into “internet battles.” Go look at the second thread for Conan that showed more recent pics. X says
" What happened to the he must be white crowd?"
There was no mention of it in that thread, he was the first to bring it up, yet “we” are the ones trying to argue with him. Give me a break.

Parity for the sake of parity is counterproductive. It says “hey look at me waving my flag to show that I regard all races as equal” when in fact if you truly do you’ll just get on with your life and the thought won’t even enter you head. When you start deciding one race needs a hand to “make” it equal whether its jobs, welfare or superheroes you in fact show that you do not regard that race as equal. Leave black fictional characters black and white ones white.
*The above is just my opinion and obviously I am not infallible.

I agree with Red. Why fuck with what’s known and accepted? The thing is, even for those of us that haven’t followed comics in years, we still remember certain characters as a certain way. I totally support having more black [or Mexican/Latin, Asian, Middle Eastern, whatever] lead superheroes, but the problem with that is it’s going to take awhile for those characters to find a home in the publics mind. That’s what was so cool abut Spawn. I think his first appearance was in '92 or '93, and he caught on like wildfire. That’s rare. Changing a known [and beloved] character just to shake things up is fucking retarded. Let’s establish new characters, build them from the ground up and give them their own movies/tv shows/cartoons.

That is still not guaranteed to work. Superheros have a built in audience who will see the film regardless. The general population is not as forgiving however. There may not be an audience for a big budget superhero film with a black lead character.
If you want to see if a black main character can open a film, look at “Princess and the Frog.” That film did not perform anywhere near as well as expected. There may still be things that are not financially worth doing. The only color that matters to most execs is green.

The guy from Community, a writer on 30 rock, and a pretty funny comedian. If you’ve seen him on television, he’s pretty funny. He has the wit to be Spider-man. He has the physical build to be Spider-Man. Now as for the range of acting sad…I’m not sure.
He’s petitioning to audition for it and is a pretty good choice.
I read Danny Glover when I first saw this… damnit.

I’m not saying it’s guaranteed to work just 'cause the character’s not white. I’m saying it would work if the character connects with a large enough audience, regardless of ethnicity. If that Disney movie you referrenced didn’t do as well as expected, I’d like to think that had more to do with it being a shitty flick or bad marketing than with the color of the character[s].
