90’s Bodybuilding Was Pretty Damn Good

Unfortunately things got tossed through the years. I remember the Franny Lew Powerhouse days of us sporting the gym’s skimpy tank tops, Zumbaz (and other similar-style pants), Otomix, Cons, bandanas, Fanny packs, Perfetto gear, NPC gear, etc.

Those were the days of town gyms in which guys knew each other versus the enormous, noisy (much of that noise coming from the gorillion cardio machines), overcrowded and messy “boxes” we see today with many of the women out-lifting many of the men! Those were the times you could even request some music or even be allowed to change stuff behind the counter or order takeout food with the gym supervisor or manager! Or witness the occasional fight that would soon be broken up, thank goodness.

This was a perfect summary of my first gym. Bring your own mix tape to the gym, walk carefully past the 2 guys having a fight in the car park, hang out in reception and chug protein shakes and order in food. Train hard for 6 months before any big guy would nod or say wassup. Once they let you in, too many questions of the 1 or 2 successful guys in there. Get to train in with 2 of the big guys cause they need a third to get the rest times right, this usually resulted in either vomiting or lying on the floor with shaky legs whilst they laughed their heads off. Really good old times.
