I am in a predicament. I took a week off benching for my meet and how it fell, almost 2 weeks off my squat. So 4 days after my bench meet i did my normal squatting routine. Did my leg swings for my hips, other warm ups, one set of super wide leg press and the. Started with 156lb warmup set then like, 216lb warmup set then 256lb warmup set and then on to my 3x5 based on 430lb max.
Did 286x5. Super easy. Did 321 x5. Easy. Going into my last set (85%) 366lbx5. Felt light on my back. And i went down and at depth i felt my left quad tear and pop. I felt the ripping and lost all strength in left leg and fell right to safety staps.
I rewatched the video and zoomed in and if you look right under the white reebock symbol on black shorts on left leg you can see it pop and even raised the shorts fabric up. I can walk but have almost zero strength in the quad. Feels like the very upper portion of the rectus femoris. I have never had an injury. And this new low bar and wide stance has saved my knees and i was having no pain. I just wonder why my quad did this. And how long it will take to recover. Is it worth going to get imaging?
Here is the video of quad rip
That sucks bro, but youāre asking the wrong dude for specific medical advice.
Iāll still give you a perspective on whether or not you should go in for imaging. If you can, you should. Thereās no downside to doing it, or getting an explanation from a medical professional. If money is a factor and you can walk and otherwise function fine but not lift, I would just take it easy for at least a couple of days and see how you feel when you move. It sounds like you have an injury all right.
Similar pops in my life have never resulted in me going under the knife, but have resulted in sonar and MRI imaging. Going in for that got the sonar and MRI imagers paid, my mind reassured, and then I proceeded to not move under load in any way that caused pain until the same movement with only bodyweight didnāt hurt anymore, as instructed by my physician.
My bro-theory is that you already had the latent strength to move big weight but havnāt quite gained proficiency in the movements or developed all of the supporting structures, like smaller muscles, ligaments, and tendons that will result from a more typical strength progression taking place over a longer period of time. You went from weak sauce squatting for a guy with your impressive bench to repping out big boy weight pretty fast. You are moving a lot better but it still takes time to really āget into the grooveā of a good movement pattern on something like a barbell squat.
One of my pops came early on in my grappling training, just fucking around on the mats and moving in ways I wasnāt accustomed to. I was at my mid 30ās strength peak, able to squat 405 for 7-9 reps and hurt myself doing bodyweight movements I just hadnāt done a whole lot of before, which is what happens when you try BJJ for the first time in your mid 30ās. Pops can be increasingly common for guys in similar uncharted movement waters as we age.
After this drama ends, I would not be working with weights you cannot rep out for at least 12 or more reps for quite some time. You need reps more than you need weight on the bar, in my opinion.
You can do some self diagnosis.
- What day did the event happen?
- Is there any noticeable swelling?
- If it was a rupture, you should see hemorrhaging at and below the tear, that might take a couple days to notice.
- Most severe tears will leave a āholeā where it separated.
Bottom line. I am not a doctor. I would see an orthopedic doctor who works with athletes.
Now, if things seem to improve quickly, if the injured muscle is the rectus femoris, it can be strength tested fairly safely on a leg extension machine. Just start very light and slowly increase weight
Happened monday night around 11pm
Cant do any body weight movements still.
Cant use leg to walk up the stairs or even body weight squat in a 3ft swimming pool with entire body under water. I can extend knee when sitting. I cant flex my rectus femoris at all. But it is up very high on it almost at hip.
No bruising. Swelling is pretty much down too. A little depression in the area. Very painful to touch. And it cannot support any weight unless leg is completely straight. Canāt use my left leg to get out of a seated position of a chain or walk up a step.
Iām not a college-educated doctor, but what youāre describing sounds like it might be a tear, or perhaps an injury Iāve never come across in my medical practices.
None of what you described sounds at all good. My guess is that you need an MRI to make an accurate diagnosis. I have never known anyone with a similar injury.
Upon review of records, rectus femoris is what I popped that day on the mats, just on my left leg. If it was anything like my pop, youāre going to be severely handicapped for at least a couple of weeks, and movement in the ways youāre describing and others youāre yet to discover will not be possible. Get some crutches and get yourself to medical care. In my case I had to go see my primary care physician first, then I got a referral to the orthopedic physician. Donāt mess around with this, get it taken care of.
Edit: Upon a better read of my actual records, and not just my recollections and faulty anatomy memory, mine was a completely different muscle, the left adductor. The difficulty in specific movements sounds similar though, and I hope your healing path sucks less than mine did. I did completely heal from it, btw.
Just a little update. It has been a long 2 plus months. Went from not even able to walk up stairs to not being able to do a body weight squat to finally getting some weight on the bar. Did a lot of high rep light weight stuff. Then hit 225 for a couple. But just slowly kept working up. Then last week was able to do 275 for 8 and did a single at 363 ( the weight i tore it). Which gave me some confidence. Then last night i did 352x5 reps. Equivalent to my 413 PR. And as high as 385 for a single. I am just glad to be even squatting again let alone getting back to where i was when i got injured. The 352x5 is too long to upload.
Good job working through it! ![]()
Thanks man!
I just squatted again last night and did 358x5 (162.5kg) and then 402.3lbs x1.
Thats a 5 rep PR and first single over 400lb since injury.
when this first happened i didnt think i would maybe ever squat again and for sure didnt think i would be back to before injury weight
I did another meet. My opener squat was a PR of 430 and then second was another PR of 452 (205kg). The spot that ripped in july felt sore, like just overworked, not injured so i didnt do a 3rd.
My bench i have been practicing a wider grip so opened with 407 and was super east so tried my PR of 430 and got it easily so then did 440 (200kg) and got it easily. I wish i would have tried like 452 or higher because i was having a great day but didnt know i was going to be that strong.
My deadlift has been down a little in training since April when i got my 501. So i opened 452. Super easy. Then went 496. And was a breeze. So i asked some guys who watched. And they said try 518. And i did it easily. I really wished i would have tried much higher on my deadlift. Like 550ish at least.
452 squat. 30kg monster squat
bar plus 5kg collars.
518 (235kg) deadlift how much do you guys think i could have went up to based on how this one moved?
200kg/440lb bench
25kg texas bench bar and 5kg collars. I sunk it in chest for pause and knew it was going to get call so almost anticipated it and went up just after the press command. So got all 3 whites even tho it looks fast haha here is him screaming press while its still on chest
