congrats on the PR!
Good work
Very solid! Jealous of those numbers.
WEEK 7 DAY 2
Up @ 4:45 with the same morning routine, off to the gym and again, the same routine of warm-ups and diligent stretching before hitting the iron. With me, there’s not much “new” or “flashy” that will catch someones eye…it’s pretty much the basics over and over and over again…and trying to improve just a little each time. Everything here is for 5 reps, unless noted ![]()
Squats: 285/ 330/ 370/ 370
Incline: 140/ 155/ 170/ 185
Deadlift: 280/ 315/ 350/ 370x4 (FAIL on rep 5…poor set up) So I rested about a minute and did 370x2 just for kicks.
Shoulder press: 115/ 125/ 135/ 145 (Didn’t follow the program with these as I was running out of time and hurried through these sets) Should have been up to 160 on the final set.
Even with the fail on the final rep of the deads I was still happy with the work, knowing it was a form flaw that failed me.
Make it a GREAT DAY!!
WEEK 7 COMPLETE
Warmed up, stretched hit it. all for 5 reps unless noted.
Squat: 285/ 330/ 370/ 415/ 455x3/ 380x8
Bench: 170/ 195/ 220/ 245/ 265x3/ 220x8
Row: 195/ 225/ 255/265/ 310x3/ 255x8
bb curls: 95/ 100/ 105/ 110/ 115
V bar pushdowns: 3 sets of 15 (right elbow sore)
My Son-in-law informed me of a small powerlifting meet at the end of March at his small gym in Dallas. Never did a meet before, I know my lifts are nothing compared to real powerlifters but I thought it might be a good experience. I have 7 weeks, should I just continue on with this program or get a little more specific for a meet. I will do some reading in the forums and make a decision. Of course your input is always appreciated.

You and me both brother! Go on and enter. It will at least provide a baseline.
WEEK 8 5x5
In all actuality, I am really on week 12. I went through the first 6 weeks of the program and took off 3 weeks during the Christmas and New Year holidays and then went back and eased back into it, doing weeks 1,3,5 and 6 over again.
Played an hour and a half of basketball Saturday night for cardio and because I love to do it, but this morning my knees and lower back were letting me know that I’m going to have to give basketball a break if I’m going to improve on my lifts.
Warmed up the usual way and hit the iron, everything is for 5 reps unless noted.
Squat: 290/ 335/ 380/ 425/ 450x4 (FAIL on 5)
Bench: 175/ 200/ 225/ 250/ 260x4 (FAIL on 5)…265x3
Row: 200/ 230/ 265/ 295/ 310 (Have a feeling the form sucked on the last set)
I blame the fails on basketball, we’ll see what the rest of the week brings.
Still trying to decide if I should do the small Powerlifting meet at the end of March, I have to get more info on it.
Hope your Monday work goes well.
I used to live in Dallas. What’s the gym, maybe I trained there?
seriously good rowing Led…
WHOAH!
This dude is storng like bull. You do a LOT of big movements all in the same workout. YOIKS! Much respect.
And yes, O35 is the only cool place on T-Nation these days.
nice work Led, Congrats on the PR!
Kicking ASS and taking names! Great work Led. Your squats are very impressive indeed. Isn’t it amazing how playing an hour our two of basketball really messes with your training when you’re over 35? Man, if I could only be 18 again ![]()

Meh…I’ll take the experience that comes with age…no to mention the overcoming of premature ejaculation.

I like your training style (probably because that’s how I train). Very solid numbers going on in here.
If you ever question your form then film your sets. I think that was the smartest thing I ever did for my training.

Premature what? What’s that? ![]()

Good lifting in here Led, how is your joints feeling other than the “Basketball Knees” ?
Thanks guys!
Cavalier- I found out the gym is actually at the Army Corps of engineers bldg. in Fort Worth. I am trying to find out what kind of equipment required, if it’s belt only, or what the deal is before I sign up. I have read that most PL meets require a singlet…I didn’t know that.
late2thegame- No question, the mind says I can still play like I did at 18 but the old(er) joints say I have to pay.
atypical1-Can’t say I’ve never got caught up a little bit in some of the “fad” routines…but I always came back to basics. It just makes sense.
Hey Led, that’s some nice lifting. How have you been finding 5x5? I’ve been following Joe’s smolov and after briefly considering that, looked at 5x5. I ended up refining my current program with more volume but I have to say, I still really like the look of it. How is your recovery?
congrats on signing up for the meet. get a hold of the meet director and find out federation, rules, etc, as soon as you can.
