59 year old Male finaly getting back to a 225 bench

5 foot 7 inch 182 lbs

i lifted a lot in my 40’s then life took over

when covid started i got back into lifting

in my 40s i was able to bench 235

i finally have 225 within reach again last bench session i was able to do 185x7 with no spot

hoping within the next week i finally can see 2 plates

That’s great but take it slow and use the strictest of form. If theres one thing aging men’s shoulders don’t like it’s bench press.

225 for 7 or a single?

Regardless you should be good for a single based off 185x7 depending on your form.

Take a couple months and work up through 195 x 7, 205 x 7 and 215 x 7.

You’ll end up stronger, and won’t have to make the risky 40 pound jump from 185 to 225 all at once.

Well I am up to 215 going slow but only 10 lbs away hopefully by February

+30 pounds in 2 months. Solid work!

Steady progress can be tedious and feel slow. But it’s way better than pushing too fast and being totally derailed by nagging injuries, sore shoulders and beat up elbows.
