Jim - Would I get better bench press strength results on 5/3/1 from doing 3 top sets(for example 3 x 5 @ 85%), or one top set AMRAP followed by two or three back-off sets AMRAP? In the past I have found that doing 3 sets of 5 reps starts killing my bar speed after a few weeks. Also are close grip 4board bench presses better than skullcrushers for carryover to bench strength? Thanks
Have you ever run 5x5/3/1? If you wanted to do more volume with the top sets, that is probably the answer your looking for.
I donāt think I have ever seen a 5/3/1 template that has 4 back to back PR sets. And remember these are PR sets not AMRAPS. Remember its generally the best practice to leave a few reps in the tank.
My guess is your TM is too high. 5/3/1 templates that include higher intensity supplemental work or volume work with your top set usually have a recommended TM at 85%. 5x5/3/1 requires an 80% TM.
