I think if it was me, I’d let them know I was there and had a gun on them, and have them lay down on the floor while I called an ambulance/ police etc…in theory. But I think confronted with a situation where you catch them in the act, the feeling of outrage at such disrespect for human life, would force the best of people to pull the trigger. That’s entirely different to assessing the situation from the perspective of them having already been apprehended though.

Vengeance does not equal justice, no matter how satisfying. It would be a more fitting tribute to their victims to see them brought to justice, rather than be made a show of. It isn’t about not wanting pain inflicted on them. I certainly want to see them suffer. Everyone’s animal urge in this situation is to want to see the perpetrators suffer, but that isn’t how society works and it isn’t how justice works. It isn’t about what everyone WANTS done to them, but about doing the right thing. The problem here is looking at something which is such a violation of our base instincts in an objective way.

Doing the “right” thing is unfortuneately a matter of opinion.

I feel that if I’m justified in killing them if I was to witness the crime then I have the right to kill them later after they’re found guilty.

(Next time I come across someone being beaten to death and I’ve pulled my Glock on the bad guy, I’ll ask the victim if he would like me to shoot the bad guy or not.)

I see where you’re coming from, but there is a sort of moral roadblock there in the form of the process between their apprehension and their sentencing- there is no way that a court would sentence them to slow death by torture, especially not by the person who caught them in the act.

I think we’re just going to have to agree to disagree on this, just as I’m sure everyone has their own opinion on what to do with vicious criminals. It’s an ugly part of the judicial system.

i completely disagree with that, thats the problem with society is to many people sit back and hope someone else will solve the problem. Have you ever heard of kitty genovese? There were people all around that could have helped her and no one did anything while she was stabbed to death. I dont know where you live and what group of people you beeen around. The situation you describe is nothing like what happened to Kitty Genovese. The point there is that NO ONE called the police. People saw what happened from their apartment windows, they weren’t standing there with a gun. Is the first time you heard about that while reading Watchmen? Look up the actual incident, I’m sure you could find the case on the net somewhere. Make sure you’re well-informed before dropping in references like that.

1 Its been said the pronlem with society today is that peoplee sit back and let others solve their problems. We have no honor anymore.
