2020 Presidential Race

It is a younger nation than the US. And I can vote there too.

It’s why I left Jersey.

He volunteered to go to war.

Which one of these people aren’t slimey opportunist? I’m sure you’d agree Cohen is … he essentially admitted it yesterday … if imagine Trump is too along with 97% of politicians +/-3% margin of error

Hence why I don’t vote. A vote for any of them is a sign of approval for the status quo.

Why not write in John Galt?

Because that would be approving of Ayn Rand as an author. I would rather write in Huck Finn.

I’d have a hard time putting in a character from a book that was by a woman who took government assistance after saying how awful it was

Probably because the assumption is that he endured more misery in service of his country than many non POWs.

It’s not that strange. We have the purple heart award, etc. The military has long honored those injured/taken in war throughout history.

Isn’t this undermined by the fact that Trump is the worst offender in this regard? He does this more than anyone. People disagree with him on basic policy or decisionmaking - which is their job - and he throws tantrums on Twitter and attacks them personally.

You make Trump out to be this Mr. Trump Goes To Washington do-gooder just trying to serve his country who can’t catch a break because he is always under a withering and unfair assault. Nonsense.

Trump has brought his brand of corruption to DC and doesn’t have a move other than personally attacking his critics. He isn’t the innocent victim you portray him to be.

So was McCain.

I certainly am.

Your post castigating him because of his personality, perfectly makes my point.

If you seriously can’t acknowledge one good action he has taken, and l have never seen a single post doing so, then you are a partisan.

I admitted as much about myself regarding Obama.

Possibly.

-the sentiment that it’s more heroic to win than to suffer is not a new one.

He wasn’t on the winning team? Not that I disagree with the notion of whether or not we “won” over there, but the history books get to say we won.

And I figure if we get to write the history books, that’s like defacto proof we’re WINNNINNNNNGGGGGG

That doesn’t make HIM heroic.

Being captured could make him a hero, I suppose, because it prevented him from crashing more planes or damaging more U.S. property.

Which one served his country and suffered at the hands of the people it was at war with? Which one dodged the draft?

Attacking his service because he was captured is like pissing on every member past present or in the future who had the same thing happen to them.

As pfury said often our highest military honors are for people who died or were injured in battle.

I mean you can defend Trump on a lot of things but this isn’t really a good spot to do so.

“The Navy praised his “aggressiveness and skillful airmanship” when awarding him the Navy Commendation Medal for an attack Oct. 18, 1967, on a shipyard in Haiphong, North Vietnam, prior to his capture. The Navy also commended his “superb airmanship” in awarding him the Distinguished Flying Cross for a bombing attack on a Hanoi power plant Oct. 26, 1967. His plane was hit by a surface-to-air missile on that mission, but he “continued his bomb delivery pass and released his bombs over the target” before being forced to eject, according to the official citation.”

Definition of hero: (first google link)

a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

“a war hero”

I don’t want to get into a semantics battle though.

Trumps comments were idiotic.

Are you a veteran? If you are, did you serve during a war or during a time of peace? If it was during a war, what branch and rank? Basically, what was your job and where?

It was his actions and leadership to subvert his captors efforts by boosting morale and unifying his fellow captives that are considered heroic.

Absolutely not!
