To make a four year old drop his pants and hit him 10 to 15 times with a switch is deranged. I have no problem with smacking a four year old on his ass, but taking a switch to bare flesh that many times is crazy.
100% agree.
I don’t have a problem with parents that spank, etc. We don’t tend to have to, but whatever. I got my ass whooped a couple times as a kid and ended up fine.
But 4? And to the point you broke skin? That crosses some lines, imo. How fucking bad can a 4 year old be where you break the skin beating him?
I got the wooden spoon many times near that young. I turned out fine. I think breaking the skin is a bit much, and I think that 15 strikes is also much. But again, I had my ass bruised a number of times. My understanding from my mom and father (who both got the switch growing up) is switches break skin more easily than flat spoons…
Frankly I’m thankful for it (now that my bum has finally stopped stinging lol). And my father always sent me up to my room (or timeout chair when I was really young) for a long time before he came in so he could calm down and decide how to to proceed best. I think that’s perfectly fine. I will openly admit I’m not up on the Peterson case details though.
Like I said. I’m perfectly fine with discipline, and if that is what this ends up being, then fine my bad.
Maybe I’m swallowing the media hype and condemning a man whom didn’t cross a line, and I’m going to feel like a shit bag if it turns out I am. We NEED disciplined kids in the world, lmao.
And I still flinch every time someone grabs the wooden spoon, lol.
Giving a kid an ass-beating doesn’t instill discipline, nor is it a form of discipline. It is a punishment. Discipline is when there are natural consequences for an action. “I forgot to bring my lunch to school, Daddy.” “Well, I guess you don’t get a fucking lunch today then, do you? You’ll remember to bring it tomorrow, and if you don’t you’ll fucking go without lunch that day, too.”
THAT is discipline. Peterson and his ilk are just punishing their kids, not instilling discipline.
As an aside, I find it fucking hysterical that Charles Barkley and others seem to think that it’s somehow okay since the entire South apparently resorts to the same bullshit. That in and of itself is a reason to condemn the action. The South is massively depressed, both economically and emotionally, there are abnormal rates of obesity there, massive rates of smoking, suicide, criminality, unemployment, entitlement expenditures, etc., etc. If “gettin’ a whoopin’”, as Barkley so eloquently put it, is a Southern institution, well…that explains a lot.
