I happen to be taking leave next week and spending one week in Scotland. Staying in Inverness to see the Highland Games on the 19th (oddly, not on the SHGA calender - different association?) and spending the rest of the week touring distilleries and looking for a few rare bottles.
Wondering if anyone has any strong recommendations of any of the other games locations 19-22 July.
Also wondering if anyone has a recommendation for accommodations in Inverness. Any B&B will do, provided the second “B” is substantial enough.
I would say go to the Halkirk games but they are on the 26th sadly.
You should definitely go to Thurso (right beside Halkirk) and Wick if you have any spare days just for the travel and sights. Wick has of the most nothernly distilleries in Scotland - Old Pulteney - which is a really nice tour with a lot of history of the town.

Just a two hour drive north it looks like, so I’ll do it. No set schedule after the 19th. I had pretty much just planned on driving around from Elgin to Aberdeen, then down A90 to see what I see.
Got a cheap B&B right on Loch Ness. If I have the sack, I may take a quick dip and hope I don’t go into cardiac arrest. If I can learn to toss a caber my trip will be complete.

A90 is a good shout, ST Andrews is lovely if you keep going directly south but if you follow the A9 you will get to Stirling which is a good visit - especially if you go a little further out to Aberfoyle and the Trossachs national park.
You will get a really nice contest between the coastal scenery of Caithness to the roads enveloped in mountains from Inverness to the wooded centre of Scotland.
