2012 Comp Season

Wed night
Benched to 375x1
Squated to 405x3x3

Today (off) - tried my periodic, “maybe my left arm has miraculously regained it’s ability to move forward really fast while holding various round, relatively light objects”. Failed again (definition of insanity is…).

Threw stuff with some half ass intensity for a while, depressed at results. Question came to mind, again, “Why don’t I just switch over to powerlifting and give up the throwing”?
Weather got up to mid 60s so I said why not and did about 400m in the still very cool river. Got out, ran with dogs in the water for a while, dogs said, “hey dumbshit, you’re still alive”. Slapped myself a few times (mentally). Felt good again. Marinated some rib eyes, gonna cook them, baked potates, for dinner when wife gets home. Looking forward to practice with the guys Saturday.

Thanks for stopping by MJ

How much did the left hand experiment fail by?

And remember, powerlifters may be strong and good looking, but throwers are strong, good looking, sexy, smart, and witty. At least that’s what they promised me back when I started.

Maybe 25’ from the power positon. Can’t rack the shot withot sticking my elbow out to the front. Shoulder just won’t rotate that way. With disc, I’m throwing from the hip. Arm/hand just won’t go back farther. Like one of my brothers told me, “you don’t make a living throwing and you kept the arm. Scratch your ass with the other hand.” And he’s the sympathetic one.

Your camera man. Good day of training.

My happy face.

If this works, should have vids of us:

  1. me, 22# hammer for distance
  2. WOB, 56#, spin (Damn “Tree” makes it look easy!)
  3. Caber toss and turn
  4. wob, 56#, Conventional
  5. 20# practice sheath

Some vids pretty shaky, no tripod, The guy running around in the gray shirt and short is Matt. We let him play cause he owns a Baskin Robbins. Guess what we did after practice.

Did shoulder/tris this morning. Shot disc practice for the next few day, meet Saturday.

You are really getting good at throwing your weight around! Nice workout!

Practice looked great and I’m sure the post throw ice cream didn’t hurt.

Great vids and great practice. I’m sure the meet will be loads of fun. I checked the river water temps here. Its a brisk 51 degrees! Its only fit for geese, herons, and chessies.

as I have always said, elder cousin, you surely know how to live

BTW, the svelt little guy, (305, 6’5", 48) walking behind me is MR. Neese.[/quote]

You’re a BEAST!

Practice looks like fun, anyone ever come by to watch? Being in a neighborhood and all.

Great pictures and videos.

Holy moly, your pal Tree is big and strong.

User, we were on one of the guys “mini farm” so it was pretty much inaccessible to spectators. A couple of cute fillies kept eyeballin me, though.

Joe, Haven’t you heard, ice Cream is the new creatine.
Wilson, cold water just keeps you from taking too much doin your swim done. Don’t skinny dip, though. (Shrinkage)
It’s all about doin what you enjoy MJ. Ain’t much triple scoop strawberry sundaes with extra nuts and whip cream can’t fix.
Null, around some of the monsters at highland games I’m sometimes tempted to use the “I’m small but I’m wry” cliche.
PG, Tree and his wife work out at the gym my wife and I use. He keeps me humble whenever I get to feelin cocky. Live’s in a little bump in the road town about 5 miles from me where he is Mayor, sheriff, fire chief, principle of the school, lay preacher at one of the churchs, and probably some other things I forget. He is just plain ugly strong and truly one of the nicest people I’ve ever known. Just can’t affort to have him over to eat too often.

Monday, swimming (in a pool)

Tonight

Squated to 455 x 2
Benched to 355x3x3

Hoping to get in some T&F throws tomorrow. Probably no more lifting til after meet. Suppose to be TStorms Saturday so will see how the meet goes. Looking forward to seeing the college kids from last year.

Hey Harry, I have a question on throwing form (I put this on Carl’s thread too).

When I throw the stones or the WFD, my right leg is my power leg. When I release, my hip is open, meaning my right foot is 90° to the direction of throw. Is this wrong? I have never had any training, and I wondered if this might be why it hurts my hip so bad.

In all the throwing vids on the interwebz, I cant tell if the push off foot is pointing in the direction of throw or perpendicular to it.

Thanks

Yup, that’ll hurt. Hips, right foot, pivot to the front. Both sets of tootsies should be facin the front. Note Randy Matson’s right foot, hell, entire position, at release (and genuflect to the MAN.) Not a stone but the release should be the same for you.

Shit not pertaining to lifting in any way follows:

30 years tomorrow, damn! Ides of March.
Left side, shoulder, ribs, hip, leg, ankle got messed up for a while. Had to re-qualify to jump afterwards. 2 years later hit my best lifts in powerlifting. (OK, a little lifting stuff)

The last flight of Cobra Ball 664
On March 15, 1981, tail number 61-2664, known as COBRA BALL II, departed Eielson AFB, Alaska with twenty-four crewmembers. The crew awaited the weather at Shemya AFB, Alaska to clear before setting out for home. A KC-135 preceded the Cobra Ball by about three hours and landed in good weather without a scratch. As the Ball made her descent to the difficult landing at Shemya AFB, the weather turned and left the aircraft in low visibility, fog, blowing snow, and sleet. Crosswinds on the runway complicated the difficult landing on â??the Rock.â?? The tower cleared the aircraft to land in these sketchy weather conditions. Fraught with turbulence, the aircraft came down in the darkness looking for a little rock in the churning Bering Sea. The jet came down too low and off the runway too far to land. The pilot, knowing he could not abort the landing, executed a shallow right turn in a desperate attempt to save the aircraft. The black wing struck the cliff at 02:30 traveling over 200 miles per hour with both engines exploding on impact. The jet, overweight and fatally wounded, skidded down the runway in multiple sections and came to rest off the runway. The tail section completely seared off and five men dead on impact.

Light some candles if you think about it.
