'twill be Leighton:
Flyers to go with Leighton in Game 2
CHICAGO – Michael Leighton will start in goal for the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals.
“Yes it will be Leighton,” Flyers senior director of communications Zack Hill told ESPN.com Sunday evening.
I guess there is no time like the Stanley Cup Finals to have a goalie controversy.

Seriously, that’s a tough choice to make when your putting it on the line for the Cup.

Yes and no.
I’ve come to despise sports media as much as despise network news media.
There is no ‘controversy’. ESPN and others need some story lines to jump on. Any little thing gets magnified out of proportion for the story.
Boucher was hurt. Leighton stepped up and did tremendously throughout the playoffs. Leighton had a bad night and got pulled. Boucher gets some ice time. I’m sure there’s some internal drama there as Boucher is the Flyers #1 and Leighton is the #2. Boucher is still healing.
Think of the Eagles when McNabb (uggghh) got pulled out. He was having a shitty game. Happens to pitchers all the time. Goalies are ‘streaky’ like pitchers. Leighton had a string of shutouts and law of averages says he’s gotta make up for that sometime. Stanley Cup Finals is perhaps not the best time or place, but it was what it was.
We’ll see what mental state he’s in tonight.

I disagree somewhat, and don’t think it’s that simple. Boucher was the starter, and lost his role because of injury not poor play. He is now healthy, so the choice is whether to reinstall your previous starting goalie who is now healthy, or to leave things as is and stick with what has been working. The choice is only compounded by the fact that Leighton played pretty poorly in the first game, and seeing as this is the Stanley Cup Finals, you have zero room for error in such choices.
leighton and niemi both let up 5 goals…

True, Niemi was only slightly better than Leighton, he managed to stop all 6 shots in the 3rd so that was enough to win it. At least you guys have a back-up goalie… Huet won’t come in unless Boucher scores a goal on Niemi.
I think we need a little more defense from now on.
Not even through first period and I’ve had 3 heart attacks.
More defense, more hitting, more penalties.
fuck.

That is exactly what playoff hockey should look like, great game. Now the pressure is on the Flyers, let’s see how they do.
Damn, 1st period was nuts, last 5 minutes of the game was nuts. Niemi won that for us.

Yes he did, that glove save was amazing. His flexibility gives him a noticeable advantage which is interesting to watch.

x2
and x2 on Niemi. Conventional wisdom is that the Flyers would capitalize on Niemi’s rebounds and relatively week high save numbers. He seems to have tightened up all around.
If he stays hot, thats obviously good for CHI, but if not, they could be in trouble. Leighton did much better last night.

What did you think about leighton getting pulled? I liked the move, I think letting up 5 before the 2nd period is over calls for it. Everyone I was watching the game with said the game was still close so they should have kept him in.[/quote]
I think it was a good move. I would have pulled Raask for the bruins back in the conference semi’s about 4 times to change momentum! Would it have mattered? I don’t know… Raask was playing well while until Leighton came in the series.
