Weel, it is a sad state of affairs really. There are a lot of lifters that are stronger than me. But I suspect they are not frequenting this forum. Also having a 20-rep squat challenge in the strength forum is perhaps not the right place? Maybe those who are very concerned with strength, don’t do much high rep work?
Jesse Marunde did 180kg x 20 in the squat. He is dead now unfortunately, but there is a goal for me to beat that one day.
I think it is good sportmanship of everyone that has posted videos and accepting this challenge, however, you have seen what I think is a good 20-rep set…

I think you posted this in the right place, I just don’t think 20 reps is something you just jump into. As far as people stronger than you doing this challenge, I think many people that strong will find themselves in the middle a program and not ready to dump it for one brutal set of squats.
To be honest though, I was hoping to see a few more videos. Maybe I’ll periodically bump this with new 20 rep videos.

Great work to everyone so far for gritting it out, and serious props to Stallion for 167.5 x20.
One thing that has amazed me tho is how nearly everyone that has posted a video so far isn’t getting below parallel. I think 2 out of the 7 videos have squats that would pass in a powerlifting competition. I was genuinely surprised to see it!! Not raggin’ on anyone, just making an observation.

At least have the cajones to tell the people who think they are going below parallel but aren’t. I know I am one.

I think might try a variety of different squats, variety is the spice of life and all that …being able to do 20 overheads would be cool.

You should do it hanley, your 160x 12 looked like you could have pushed that to 20. Really the 20 rep is a strange beast, a lot of powerlifters have strength to lift big #'s but the 20 rep just drains you mentally and physically.

I thought I just did. I didn’t see the need to mention everyones names. I’m sure the guys who posted the vids can see for themselves. Besides, as I said, I wasn’t doing it to rag on anyone. I was genuinely surprised. I’m used to training in two atmospheres - A hardcore PL/bodybuilding gym where most everyone squats below // and a commercial gym where people don’t seem to understand what // is. I assumed that since T-Nation was “home of the hardcore” it would have been in the former category. One thing I am guessing tho is that the people who did record themselves for this 20 rep challenge aren’t used to seeing themselves squat, so maybe it’ll give them some good ideas on what to work on.
I video nearly all my squat training session, and a lot of my deadlift ones, and the things I pick up about my own lifting from watching them back is invaluable.
And Shizen, I’ve a meet on July 26th. Once that’s out of the way I’m gonna try and put up some 20 repper vids. 160kg x20 was the goal alright (but that would probably be done in a belt). I’ll probably train to around 140kg x20 before I put my belt on. I know it’s not strictly in the spirit of the thread, but I’m more concerned about getting my actual squat numbers up than my 20 rep beltless squat numbers!!
So I’ll still be joining in, but I will be diverging from the true spirit of this thread at some stage.

Fair enough my post was bit angry.

This was the first time I had filmed myself doing squats so I’ll know for next time, may put a bench so that I just touch it at the right depth.
On the basis of my short stay here I would say that actually T-Nation has about a 10/30/60 split between people who compete (like you)/people who have done a strength program for more than a year(arbitrary yard stick of 400lbs DL)/eveyone else (like me).
For those interested, here’s how I was squatting a few years ago. Pretty poor technique and very bad depth. So I think I should not bash anyone doing the same mistakes, as I have been there myself…
Done, and not interested in doing that again anytime soon! I am currently uploading the video and will post the link once it is complete.
That really sucked. I think that is the 2nd time that I have squatted for more than 8 reps other than for warm-ups and the first time was my first attempt at this ridiculous challenge. The weight really does start getting heavy at like rep five and I couldn’t believe how long it took to get to 10 reps, at 12 reps I thought there is no way but I would at least make 15. Once I hit 15 I figured I was almost there and didn’t want to repeat this process and just shut it out and ground it out.
If you would have asked me before I read this thread what I thought the most reps I could squat at 315 would be, I would have said 10-12, I would have NEVER believed that I could do 20 reps. Just goes to that you are capable of alot more that you think.
The angle on the camera is not great on this set, my first set with the better angle was interrupted by a guy coming over to use the squat rack that my camera was set on to do curls. I kid you not. Nobody ever uses the racks in my gym and due to the limited space to setup the camera down there, I thought this would be the best place for it.
I should post the video of the guy coming over to interrupt my set to use the rack (he is damn lucky I was only on my 4th rep). I know that there are a few people on this site that can appreciate the humor of squat rack curls.
In fact, if you look in the mirror while I am doing my set on this video, you can see the little guys jamming away on their arm curls (the barbell even comes into the frame on a few of my reps). I love commercial gyms.
You earned my respect with that set. Depth seemed to be good throughout the set as well. I could tell this was pretty hard. Congratulations on having completed the challenge. I spotted the curlers right away. I have a dream of one day starting a gym where curling is prohibited and everyone must start their session with a leg-exercise. (Well… that was a joke, but you get my drift…)

Damn good set, man. Squats were all below parallel. According to the timer at the bottom of the screen, you were under the weight a total of 3 min., 4 sec. from liftoff to return. 315 x 20 is my goal and I can see it’s gonna suck.
I’m still trying to rehab my back and yesterday I did 25 reps with 225# in the trap bar deadlift without much problem so maybe I can squat before too long. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks, I would have never thought I could do such a thing before your thread and challenge. I was certainly slow getting through the set, a lot slower than most if not all of the submissions. I will have to get used doing high reps in order to get my time down.
I am uploading the video of my first attempt because it is kind of funny and it is also a better angle to show the depth of my squats.
This is awesome so far! So many people trying this. I haven’t done 20 rep squats for about 2 years, and at that stage 155 lbs was hard for me (I neglected my legs for many years). I figured I’d try out 245 lbs today, and I got it. I think I could probably get 265, which I will try out maybe in a couple of weeks (need a break from the 20 reps for a week ). Here’s my contribution…
Hrmmm, I hope that video shows up. My friend did a set of 20 rep squats too. He chose 155 lbs and it was clearly too easy. We’ll have to have him try 185 next time. Maybe a couple of reps could have gone lower, but pretty decent form I’d say. Hard to keep great form for 20 reps Here’s his video.
graphicsMan, good effort from both you and your friend. I am not sure that all the reps was deep enough (top of tigh-muscle lower than knee-cap seen from a sideview.
Still, you show great sportmanship taking on this challenge! Well done! You still had some more in you, but you probably did more work than most of the people in the gym that day…
You can count me in for this challenge as well. I gotta find someone to tape it for me though. I’m doing starting strength right now so maybe I’ll do these instead of my 3x5 squats tomorrow.
Im pretty weak for my size and my 1RM is 315 so Im not sure what weight I could do 20 reps at. Any advice on what weight to try?
