2 Things I Don't Get

I just came from the gym and saw two things I don’t understand:

  1. Why do some people carry around gallon jugs of water? For those of you that do this, I’m not criticizing, I just seriously don’t understand. Do you actually drink an entire gallon of water in 1 hour? It seems like a big hassle, but I see a lot of people do it.

  2. Why do people put the incline as high as possible on the treadmill and then hold on. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose?

  1. because its easy and convenient. it reminds you of chugging milk out of the jug, which is for badasses only.
  2. yes it does, youll never see anyone that knows anything about fitness doing this.

  3. Chances are those people carry around those gallon jugs all day, to make sure they drink 1-2 gallons a day, its much easier then writing down each cup you drank.

  4. hell if I know.

that and water fountain water sucks. I carry around the Nalgene bottle Biotest sells because that lasts me the day at work.

  1. A gallon of water seems cumbersome to me. I’ll stick with a 20 oz bottle and refill it 5-6 times a day.
2)Touching the treadmill at all takes away from the workout. It’s already a moving conveyor belt that takes half the effort out, holding on just ruins everything and makes it a TSB.

If you’ve actually got something mixed in your gallon jug (ie. Mag10, or BCAAs), it makes sense, but other than that, at the gym (not during your day), carrying a jug seems to make certain trainers feel that they look more hardcore (right alongside their wife beaters, work boots, and of course lifting belt while they do crunches -lol).

I used to always time my rest intervals by my walk to the water fountain between sets.

S

I don’t carry a water bottle or log book. It interferes with my focus. Plus I recover faster when I move so a trip to the fountain after a heavy lift is a good idea for me.

As MStu said, if you don’t have something in the jug, I don’t get it.

Most of my buddies use the gallon jug. They too do it so they know how much they drank that day. I’ve got a 1.) 800mL bottle at work that I refill 2-4x a day. Whatever works

2.) They are preparing to launch into outer space?

If the person with the incline as high as possible has 32" quads and is fairly lean, it does NOT defeat the purpose.

if the person with the incline as high as possible is overweight, gasping for air and looks like if they let go they fall backwards, it DOES defeat the purpose.

I’ve seen many contest prepping bodybuilders who turn the incline up and also hold onto the rail. Big deal.

I understand the gallon jug of water, I have a 32oz bottle that I generally fill up again before im done.

I cant stand the guys who lug around there bags with them. There are lockers in the LOCKER rooms.

a gallon jug may not be completely necessary but it can help track liquid intake…

I’m assuming you don’t mean like, their gym bag with actual gym stuff in it(chalk, straps, wraps, belt, etc etc), cause that seems pretty normal to not want to go to the locker room every other movement to get what you need.

  1. This isn’t the hardest thing to understand. Some people (myself included) prefer to walk to the water-fountain after every set. Others may not like to constantly get up while working out, and that makes perfect sense to me. It probably causes some people to lose focus, if nothing else. At any rate, it really shouldn’t be eating at you. It’s simply a matter of preference, although I do find it funny when I see some skinny-fat guy doing it.

  2. If like me you used the incline function on the treadmill to get your heart rate up, then it doesn’t defeat the purpose provided that heart rate is where you want it to be.

This thread makes me want to fashion a makeshift sling for my Nalgene bottle.

I used to see some of the weirdo’s at my old gym with the incline up to like 45 degrees. It was to the point where if they let go of the bars they would fall over backwards and hurt themselves.

Carrying the gallon water jug makes you a badass. I guess you’re not one.

Yeah, I always keep my bag with me, but that’s because it contains the aforementioned gear.

As far as the gallon goes, it’s probably an all day thing. Keeping a gallon around you is an easy way to keep track of how much you’re drinking.

I have never seen anyone take anything out of there bags, But your point makes sense.

I work out in a college rec center, there is no way in hell my backpack will fit in a locker, especially if it’s full. I am not willing to pay any more than i already do, for the membership, for a locker either. My other bag is a gym bag, and it contains my belts and straps and etc. Also at previous gyms, i’ve had things stolen from the lockers, so from then on i keep my bag closeby regardless which bag i happen to have with me.

For the gallon jug thing, i am one of the only people on my campus that carries a gallon jug with me everywhere i go. During most of my workouts, i drink between 1/2gallon to a gallon of water.

I understand not wanting to go to the water fountain between sets, but carrying a gallon jug seems like overkill. I would rather carry around a liter or two, but that’s just me. I’m sure they’re all just tracking their water intake…

The people I was referring to on the treadmill hold on to the top and lean back so far that their bodies are perpendicular to the treadmill deck. If they let go, they would definitely fall off. If you’re going to be perpendicular, why not keep the incline lower and not risk the injury?

These things didn’t bother me, I was just curious. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing out on something. I also saw a guy doing DB lateral raises while standing on one foot and leaning against a preacher curl bench. Pretty sure I’m not missing anything there so I didn’t ask.

These two things are essential to living the Warrior lifestyle. I guess you just aren’t a Warrior.
