2 Questions (abs/chest)

  1. Do you give more attention to training abs when bulking or dieting or equal? Why?

  2. When training for maximum chest size, how important is it to include movements like flies, pec dec, cable crosses, etc?

  1. Both, because abs are muscles

  2. I would pick one of three, preferably flies, and switch up the incline at which you perform them per week.

Of course, switch exercise every so often - throw that pec dec out, stick with dumbell flies, cable flies, crosses, etc.

I do this exercise last in a routine, after presses (flat, incline, decline), floor presses, and dumbell pull-overs.

Core is always critical.

Like Rummy suggests, flies and cross-overs can be helpful. Can be used as pre-exhaustion or as finishers, but it’s important to realize the benefits of working with dumbells as opposed to relying on cables. Cables can be useful, but I’d use them sparingly. Leave the pec dec for resting your water bottle on.

2)Out of the three, I would most definitely go with the flyes. I don’t care what anyone says, “workout machines” are the work of the devil. I also do very little cable work.

Why use cables sparingly? I think cable flyes are actually better than with dumbells because of the constant tension.

Honestly, from a bodybuilding perspective, I like cable flyes because there’s really nothing that puts such a consistant horizontal stress on your pecs. Dumbell flyes use less and less of the adduction function of the pecs as you get to the top. Cables can be done so as to not do that.

I can’t say I do any regular ab training. I figure all the squatting, deadlifting, and overhead pressing will give me enough ab work.

I might occasionally do some barbell rollouts, but that’s about it.

As for the chest exercises, I don’t do any of them with any regularity, and this is also coming from a bodybuilding perspective. Compound lifts for the most part. If I had to choose one, it would probably be some sort of dumbbell fly.
