Hey y’all. I’m new to the forum but not lifting. I’m also brand new to strongman. I watched the 2013 competition and was completely amazed. This is something I’d like to do but I’m a bit on the short side (5’7") and my lean mass weight is about 175. Right now I’m overweight by a ton (I weigh 250).
I just bought a house in Murfreesboro,Tennessee so I don’t have a ton of money. Now to get to my question:
What is the 1st major piece of equipment I should get for Strongman training? I already split wood for the winter.
I was thinking a steel log or barbell set. How far off am I?
Yeah, I’d say log as its hard to replicate with anything else.
From there find kegs on craigslist for loading and go get a free tire for flipping

What size log (diameter I mean) and where from? And same with tire (minus the where from).
12 inch is alot different than 8-10 so id go with a 12 inch log to get the feel of having to have that big circumference under your chin.
If you have no equipment just buy a good barbell and plenty of weights. Learn to deadlift and OHP.
Yoke. Particularly one that can second as a squat rack. Higher priority to log in my modest opinion as you can use it for stone loading and sled push/pull. Tends to be marginally more pricier than a log which isn’t even half as dynamic.
Forgot to mention: Anything I do will be outside unless I can find a quality gym (not a fitness center). I don’t have a basement or garage but have a considerable yard (4.5 acres) some of which is for farming.

Rogue has some pretty good ones cheaper than most others.

I was actually just looking at their products but I have no idea what I’m looking as far as yokes. I mean I know what a yoke is (saw tons of strongman videos)but as far yoke/squat combo…
And the reason I picked between log and barbell was the fact I don’t have anywhere to protect something quite as large as a yoke or squat rack.

Any rogue yoke. Yoke is a bang for your buck. Log is meh compared to it.

How would a yoke hold up against the elements? It’s gotta stay outside. I don’t have a basement or garage.

Seconded. You can train a lot of different events with the yoke. I used to lower it down for Zercher carries to train for Conan’s wheel events, and it’s great for stones or other load events as you can just throw it over to the other side then jog around the yoke and do it again.
the yoke would be fine outside, if you start seeing rust on it just clean it up with sand paper and repaint with a rattle can. a barbell on the other hand needs to stay inside. i would get farmers carry handles as my first thing or a big tractor tire.
If you are starting from nothing, get a barbell set and some plates. Gotta build your strength and learn the basics. Then probably a log, and if you are in farm country, a big tire should be easy to come by.
One thing you can get for free is tractor tire. Go to any small town tire store that sells all kinds of tires and they will give them to you because they have to pay a fee to get them hauled off. I got my tire from a place like 5 min away and as long as he can’t sell them, he savs them for the local strongman trainees. There was an 1100 lb tire that he told the best guy locally if he could flip it he could have it, so he flipped it and then they loaded it up.
