Did you think 1st place looked better than you? What about 2nd and 3rd? The pictures don’t tell the whole story, as some of them the 3rd place guy is caught half between tensing and not. This could be the same for the 1st and 2n place guys. You were there so you had the best view of what they actually looked like. But again this is if you were paying attention to them, so not sure how much of them you actually saw.

Stu, you would say it’s fair that seeing pics of a guy caught half between tensing and not is not the same as seeing him live hitting poses on stage right? I’ve seen a few videos of guys posing and they don’t look special until they hit a few poses and are fully tensed up.

BUT from what I can see in the pics you should have gotten at higher than 4th.

Thanks for your input Koing. Being Physique, there was not much posing…the posing was pretty much what you see in the pics…front, back and side poses. We weren’t really suppose to tense…of course we all flexed our abs as much as possible. Nevertheless, they did grade me a 10 on my posing, but like I said there really wasn’t much to it. I’m not really debating the placings, it’s just a little difficult to tell what they grade on the most, or what exactly they are looking for. Overall it was a great experience and I have the most respect for the organization (INBF) and all the competitors.

Stu, the scorecard left me confused as well. But oh well, I’m grateful to be able to compete, and learned so much from the contest prep. I’m looking forward to start training for my next competition in Bodybuilding. I was already comparing myself to some of the bodybuilders at this show.

Onwards and up in bodybuilding

Dude you looked great. Who gives a damn what the judges said. you clearly looked better than everyone else and thats all that matters.

That’s something that people who have never seen an actual show in person may not realize. Some competitors may appear so-so just standing ‘relaxed’ in a line up, but when they actually ‘lock in’ their poses, suddenly veins spring to the surface, fibers explode, and things just pop in a way that you maybe wouldn’t have suspected.

Alternatively you may have guys who just look amazing standing in a line up (for whatever reason, usually structure and posing), but when they hit their shots, they’re ok, but not quite what you were expecting.

That’s why, while we can assess to some degree that our boy’s physique was probably better than he was given credit for, trying to actually do our own placings based on a still pic isn’t the best idea.

Good to know my thoughts were the same.

When are you next judging a comp?

Yeah, Bob Paris actually talked about this in a similar manner in his old autobiography. How some pros just look absolutely beastly standing there, or even fully clothed, while others can blend in (some a relative degree), but when you finally see 'em strip down and get a pump going, they can be even more impressive than the pro who looked so impressive standing there in the XXL t-shirt.

I’ve just done two shows the last month or so (The Northeast American, and just this last weekend the Garden State Classic), which is still seriously an amazing experience.

Sitting at the table and conversing as a peer with Pros who I was reading about in magazines I’d pick up in Penn Station over a decade ago, and still respect immensely… well, it’s just very very cool.

Also, having up and coming competitors come up to me after the show asking for feedback, advice, and even if they can email me questions gives me a good feeling. I’ve mentioned before how Cordova and Whitacre both were very forthcoming with information and amazingly supportive when I got serious about getting onstage, that to be on the other side of things, it’s just one of the really rewarding things about the sport.

I was also asked to judge the Hercules again this year (end of June), which definitely is a big deal to me. Not only is it such a big show (longest running tested show in the Country), but so many of the top Wnbf Pros won their cards there. Being a part of that history (last year they let me hand out a few trophies -lol) is a wonderful compliment indeed.

You keep saying you learned a lot. Well, what did you learn?

[quote]1 Man Island wrote:

Just off the top of my head:

1)I’ve done quick weight loss plans in the past, very low carb, lots of HIIT training, but had no idea how many calories I was eating. I ended up flat and weaker. This time I counted calories and carbs and only dropped when I stopped losing.

2)I focused on keeping my strength which meant I was keeping muscle.

3)Carb backloading works for me. It helped make me more insulin sensitive, kept my muscle and strength up, kept me burning fat during the first half of the day, build muscle at night…and allowed me to enjoy some simple carbs at night.

4)Intermittent fasting also helped me get leaner…I was doing 16fast/8 hrs feed. However, towards the end of it made me hungrier and really crave carbs more. I switched to a 24 hr fast once a week and that worked better. I never got over being hungry every morning with the 16/8 protocol.

  1. I feel I did very little cardio and I kept burning fat. I focused on losing no more than 1/2 to 1 lb per week. Sometimes I lost nothing.

  2. I dropped all caffeine, pre-workouts and any fat burners during the beginning of my contest prep and added it towards the end. It allowed me to add something if I ever plateaued.

  3. I didn’t do any crazy depletions during my last week and I think it turned out well. I never depleted water. I followed some ideas from Layne Norton and Cliff Wilson except just followed my own protocol when it came to carb depletion and loading. But generally nothing too different than what I had already been doing.

  4. I learned(from P-wolves, Z-raw, Grizzly and others here) that you can still have a good amount of carbs and lose fat. Except I did carb-backloading(took in all my carbs at night).

  5. The 2nd to last week until my competition I went balls to the wall with really low carbs and cardio everyday. I figured I couldn’t lose too much muscle in the little time left, but maybe an extra lb or two of fat loss may give me an edge…The result is that a week later…I have never felt weaker, hungrier, really like shit ever in my life…I felt almost sick, could barely move. I literally felt like a zombie and had to recover from that quickly before contest time.

  6. Just my opinion but I believe I am built more for Bodybuilding than Physique. I kept getting asked why was I not competing in that category, advised to do so.

This is all I can think of for now…I’ll add more if I think of anything else.

I can say I learned all this through trial and error and information shared on this forum. Folks like Stu, Pwolves, Tim, Lonnie, Myosin, Koing and others shared some invaluable information that I used to help with my prep. I just put a few of these ideas together to work for me.

You looked fantastic at the show. It’s almost impossible to tell by just the pictures, but I would have had you top 2, definitely top 3. Going off only those pictures (which is, again, not a good idea), I wouldn’t have had either of the top two win the competition. I think they would have both been out of my top 3.

Anyways, what’s important is that you got on the stage, and looked good doing it!

I think you should have won both of those comps, great physique! getting a score for hair/makeup shows that you should switch to bodybuilding lol.

Lmao! You got a point there. Maybe I should have used a stylist. Lol

You should be really proud Yodaddy, definitely one of the most impressive precontest to contest transformations I’ve ever seen! I agree with the others that you had the best look on stage from the shots you posted
