190kg (418lb) Squat

Mine sounded snarkier than it was meant to be.

LOL. No worries guys. I just wanted to make sure everybody, especially @carlbm, knew I wasn’t trying to be a jerk/nazi about it. Just providing feedback. Sounds like we were all on the same page. Sometimes words don’t come across as intended on the forum and I was just clarifying. That being said… @carlbm its a nice strong lift you should be proud and keep on hitting those PRs!

@blshaw - I think of all the guys I read on T Nation you’ve got to be one of the nicest.
The crap you guys deal with in the Pharma section is legendary. I’d lose my cool after 2 maybe 3 posts from some of those guys.

Depends on the promoter (or more accurately, the equipment they have access to).

In some squats it is to a fixed depth that is the same for everyone but often it is to a adjustable height and that is usually to or below parallel (these are so painful being a part of that I doubt I’ll ever enter something with a squat again)

When I go both wide and below parallel the vast majority of that tension is in my hips. I have to squat a little high with a wide stance to spread that tension throughout my whole lower body. It’s still a hip dominant squat for me, just not to an extreme. Now If I wanna work the front of the legs hard, I go as high bar as I can (I go as far as using a manta ray attachment for “extra high bar”, narrow, and deep.

At this point, I wanna be strong through multiple angles and ROM’s even if it means I don’t get as strong at a particular one.

Oh! And Congrats!!!

For WSM recently, each individual athlete squats for head ref during pre-meet equipment check, and the height to the ref approved depth is then marked for each individual competitor.

I quiet like high repping squats. A goal of mine is 200 for 20. I think that would be something to tell the grand kids about.

It is more the waiting for 20 people to get their platform heights right which includes the handful of people who come to the sudden shock that they haven’t been squatting to depth and then the few of those that want to argue about it (eg “I compete in powerlifting and I have never got a red light in my life…”)

Aha - I see.

I guess a lot of strong man is very easy to judge. You get the odd argument over pressing (Thor / Eddie) and some people getting touchy with dead lift lock outs. But when it comes to most events it’s quiet easy to judge.
Did the stone end up on the platform?
Did the yoke cross the line?

This is part of the attraction for me. A lot less “technical”. A lot more about strength.

I had a squat for reps event that ended up going VERY quickly for the opposite. We were touching boxes with tires and folks that were used to dive bombing their squats ended up bouncing the bar straight off their backs and getting zero reps. It was only those folks that were used to just BARELY hitting depth that got any reps in.

On that note, I think the squat posted here was a good “strongman depth” squat. I cut mine on the higher side in training, although I’ll work to bury the lighter weight squats as a means to keep that part of the motor pattern grooved.

That’s a fair point. I’ll look to go extra deep on my warm up squats. To make sure I’m keeping the moment “alive”. And that I’m retaining the ability to squat deep.

Damn bloody good lift!

Thank you.
Excited to see the next wave. I think its going to be horrid. My coach is a real fan of volume. And it appears to work for me. I’ve put on weight but not a waist size and my squats gone north as has my dead lift…

My gluten is always lazy- just sitting around doing nothing. Pisses me off…

Bunch of form Nazis in here .

Your stance looks nigh on identical to me and depth the same, so I’m saying it’s an amazing lift! Great work Carl, keep it up gives me something to chase. Love that feeling of hitting a new weight and then realising it’s not a big deal as you rep it! 200 X 20 end of 2021!
