Pretty long day at work today. Came in late and hit high bar squats, deadlift speed work, Close grip machine rows, light split squats and pull ups. Haven’t used hook grip consistently since the comp and working on getting used to it again. The deadlift singles hurt a little. Everything beltless still for now. Finished with stretching out the hamstrings.

High bar Squat
135x8, 225x8, 325x3, 415 for 5 sets of 4. Last rep of the 5th set was grindy.

Close grip machine rows
200x15, 220x15, 240x12

Thought today wouldn’t be that great of a bench day. Turned out to be pretty good. I was up early to hunt so I i was pretty tired after work. Took a quick nap and hit the gym. Still here hit some bench Sunday nothing great and had class tonight so couldn’t make it. Depending on warm-ups I may pull a heavy set tomorrow. Id like to get the belt in but still some soreness and the belt will make it worse. Well see how it goes.

Wooo boy that was a terrible pull session. Woke up early and figured I’d hit the gym before work. In the back of my mind 695x4 was there beltless. Warm-ups felt a bit shity and i was getting light headed at 585. Just wasnt there had so much working against me. No belt, straps instead of hook grip so the bar is higher in my hand and a morning session. Switching to all 45 was also a bad idea. First time in a while I’ve been pulled forward and I believe it’s from the whip. Hit almost two garbage reps and was really pissed at myself.

Still hitting it but lost some motivation because I can’t train with a belt and my side is bothering me from time to time. Regardless if I pull a pr before January, 800+ will fall next year.

Will be going completely beltless the next two weeks not even going to try one to see if it feels ok. Also going to cut the pulling back to reps at 405ish and squatting to 405ish reps as well. Squated heavy today but left off the belt and it felt fine. Close grip bench, some rows and dB press

Squat
135x8, 225x8, 315x5, 405x5, 455x2, 475x1

Machine close grip row

After today I think 405 is going to be way too light to drop to. I’m going to raise that but try not to get to carried away. I basically came in for a big set with 405 and i couldn’t recover to finish my work out. The weight was light from start to finish but my legs just couldn’t take the reps and started seizing up. Set was 405x24

Pulled the trigger today got a full 459kg competition set of calibrated plates. They have a deal going saved about $700. And saved more going kg instead of lb

Uhm, excuse me?

Is this real life?

Damn impressive.

Also congrats on the new weight set, it’s always fun to add to the personal collection.

Ha ha ha thanks. And hopefully I’ll start to use the plates at my house. I have a big lou ferrigno dumbell set I picked up a few years back real cheap $500 for 55-125s in 10 lb jumps but they just collect dust. Figured even if a don’t use them they may eventually be worth something.

That’s a steal. I recently added a set of 50-100lb Pro-style dbs to my home gym (5lb increments). I’m liking the versatility it’s adding to my workouts. Currently trying to sell half the set (I only really need 10lb increments) to free up some space/funds for more goodies (I have my eyes on a reverse hyper at the moment).

I warn others when they talk about “saving money” by building a home gym rather than paying membership fees. It will still be quite a few years before this gym even comes close to breaking even on what the monthly membership dues would add up to.

The convenience and time saving is where the value comes for me.

EDIT:

What barbell do you use/prefer? I’m currently looking at the Texas Power Bar and the Rogue Ohio Power Bar.

Just saw your post on conventional deadlifitng vs sumo and how it sort of hurts your back. Man, I’ve struggled with conventional for years. It’d go no where and/or give me crippling back pain no matter how much I mobilized or tweaked my form. I dropped it 2 years ago and focused solely on sumo, got my sumo from 550 to 675 and my conventional shot up with it and I didnt even train it. Literally just randomly decided to pull a heavy conventional deadlift yesterday and it fucking destroyed my lower back and now I’m kinda screwed for a little bit.

Totally not worth it. Fuck conventional, some people are just not built to be great conventional pullers. Granted, we can always find ways to build it up…still.

Yea. I’m getting old now so I am thinking in the future it’ll be worth its weight in gold if I have a kid or something. I’ll still be able to train heavy the days I can’t make it to the gym. But will probably get two squat sessions in a day once I get things setup. I really don’t have a bar preference, I’ve always used whatever is in the gym. I’ll be getting opinions before I pick up a bar though.

I’m done with it. Just not worth it for my goals. It would kill my back to the point I couldn’t squat. Sumo I can pull over 600 twice a week and still squat heavy. Going off your name do you compete in strongman? Then your kind of screwed with the rules. I’m just glad powerlifting allows both.

Hmmm…I’m currently nursing my back to health after hurting it pulling conventional. I may have to give sumo a try for a bit.

Not sure if anyone else got to take advantage of the sale. It looks too be over, was a hell of a deal though. About $1,500 compare to about $2,200. Any way back to lifting. The only thing sore from yesterday’s deadlift set was my traps. That’s kind of surprising. Hit some football bar bench, light Slingshot, Db press, some dual cable rows, and back extensions holding at the top. And some close grip but was pretty beat by then. No spot on any of the benches so didn’t push for any reps unless I was sure they were there. Side is feeling good the beltless higher reps seem to be doing some good for it. On another note to anyone that has read this far if you ever want to come hang out and do some training with me let me know. No cost other than a spot and you’ll possibly have to pay the day or so for the gym. I can give you some pointers for deadlift and stuff. Figured I’d throw it out there. In Central nj.

Football bar bench
145x5, 175x5, 205x5, 265x5, 295x4

Slingshot
315x4, 325x4, 335x4, 345x4, 355x4

Db press
115s x10,10,10

Back extensions
75x6, 125x6, 175x6, 225x6

Close grip bench
135x3, 165x3, 195x3, 225x3, 255x3, 285x3, 315x2

I’ve recently found doing conventional block pulls from around knee height give many of the training benefits on conventional deadlifts without aggravating my lower back and hips like pulling from the floor do - could be worth a try.
