@anna_5588 Do you not have a Russian department at your school? I wish I could have started learning Russian earlier, in college. But I also minored in Germanic studies and, on top of my major and other requirements, truly didn’t have the space to tackle it.
@T3hPwnisher Regarding philosophy, I do think the 19th century was far superior. There were so many more gems then. But I do find 20th century history more compelling.
@doomyguy I don’t typically read a lot of recent fiction (dabbled a bit last month), but I heard so many good things about this that I can’t resist.
Not one that’s worth reading despite disagreeing with it? I find that those reads can be educational too. They sometimes teach me more about me than books I agree with do.
It’s not necessarily about disagreeing with it. It felt like an annoying uncle chiding me at the dinner table with a poorly articulated, whiny argument.
T-ransformation week 2 review:
Weigh in at 206.2lbs. More than slightly disappointed in that, because I felt my nutrition had been pretty sharp and I’m still at a point where it should be really easy weightloss. I guess that just means it’s time to try a bit harder.
In terms of training: I hit the two lifting sessions I had planned, and 2 of my 3 running sessions, plus a bonus session. Not quite where I wanted to be, but certainly an improvement. Stress has been increasingly high through the week, along with some looooong, stressful hours, probably had an impact.
Remember that weight loss is not linear. You can have 2 weeks plateaux, for a reason. If you’ve been serious on the diet and exercise, it’s most likely you gained some water weight, and it should regulate itself soon enough, keep faith, trust the process, you’re doing good and shedding fat.
@ChongLordUno I’ve always used Myfitnesspal when I’m being careful with nutrition in the past, and it does what I need it to do. What does the Carbon Diet thingy do that’s extra?
@aldebaran I’m totally aware that deep into a diet, weight gain can be really unpredictable but I’m definitely not at that stage yet. I fully expect pretty easy and drastic weight loss at this point, so a gain is a slight concern. The stress is almost certainly part of the picture, but it also occurs to me that while my nutrition was 99% to plan last week, it also included a lot, a lot of “inflammatory” foods. Foods that have the potential to turn me into a chemical hazard when combined (eggs, beans, cheese), which might also be a factor. This week is far lower in these foods, and next week they can easily be cut out entirely so it will be interesting to see the effects over the course of the 3 weeks.
I know English isn’t your first language, but I believe it’s spelled T E A.
@anna_5588 I figure they invented the word, they get to spell it how they want. We obviously liked it enough to steal it. And yes, I’m fully aware that’s not quite how languages develop.
Don’t look at the US for this. We have kids who are illiterate that create new meanings for old words and somehow it makes its way into the dictionary.
It’s “aging” me faster than time itself. I’m 36 years old and feel like I was born at one of the best times possible. I learned how to behave according to my parents’ standard (baby boomers). We had no technology other than antenna TV. I was entering high school when the internet took off, but we still couldn’t use it. Our research papers didn’t allow internet sources. I still learned how to use the library and encyclopedias, but I also learned how to use the modern stuff as it grew. The end result is someone who can keep up with the modern world while having the manners/ethics of the old days.
I prefer the old ways so as my generation and the following people dumb themselves down with nonsense such as using words inappropriately, I feel older and older. I’m 36 but feel like my behavior puts me well into my 40s, if not 50s. I also refuse to cave in to the nonsense so I’m exhibiting stubbornness well beyond my years.
I’m pretty sure I was born 50 years too late. Social media completely passes me by, and the bullshit that goes with it. I’m also pretty certain that phone technology peaked about 2005 and that nothing of value has been added to phones in the last decade.
I feel the same way
As much as I love technology and the comforts of modern life, it’s moving too fast for me.
The only reason I don’t wish I were born in some previous decade is because I would either be a starving peasant girl or have my feet bound
I’m pretty sure I’d have been just as comfy being born 40 years earlier. There was a passage in one of Bill Brysons books explaining why his generation was probably the luckiest to have ever lived, and I’m inclined to agree with it. All of the technology that really made an impact on quality of life had pretty much been invented, but much of the bullshit that came with it hadn’t. In terms of quality of life, i can’t say I’ve seen much invented in my lifetime that’s had a positive impact.
It’s worth noting that I say this as a middle class, white, straight male with no major disabilities and therefore have very little to fear from moving back in time.
