10 Miles Back Again

Yeah… that’s a big one

My parents were very very (borderline starving) poor growing up, my grandparents were literally starving ( survived 2 famines) and my great grandma was the daughter of a wealthy land lor, so had her feet bound, then the revolution came and she lost everything… and was starving

Am inclined to agree - one exception possibly being gps combined with interactive maps.

My parents were nowhere near that level of poverty, but compared to today, they certainly were poor. I grew up in the seventies and those were different and far more frugal times. It was hand me down clothes and I remember having finally saved up enough to get a nice tv, was a bloody big deal for them. I think we sometimes forget how comparatively wealthy many of us in the western world are these days.

What’s really sickening is that people serving time in jail for violating laws of society live better than free people in poverty.

Agreed 100% I feel pretty sure I was doing this 10 years ago, but I could be wrong.

I used to listen to the Jocko podcast regularly on my way to work in the morning, especially during Lockdown pt.1. I found the motivational stuff after a bit one dimensional, but the book reviews at the start were fantastic in reminding me that I’m one of the luckiest 0.000000001% of humans to ever walk this planet, even with a face like this. I know we all know this, but a daily perspective reminder was really useful for me at that point.

Now I’m in my 30s, I see no issue with any of these things. It would probably have been a different story in my teens though.

I find it so easy to get off on rants about this stuff, and I was just about to. But I try to remind myself it’s also not fair that I was born healthy, in a wealthy country, in the 20th century. I’ve already hit the jackpot. It would be like Jeff Bezos complaining how poor he is because someone else is richer.

I think the first iphone came out sometime in 2007, but google maps is from 2005. So possibly, but probably not on a phone.

It is really amazing how much have happened in just 14 years since the smartphone revolution began.

Nah, me neither, my point is more that we tend to take much in our lives for granted.

Agree 100%

For me I care much more about being able to afford things than actually owning things. i.e. being able to walk into a store and buy what ever I want instead of actually buying stuff

With that said, I’ll admit that a big reason I sometimes with I was born in a different decade is that my aesthetic tastes are much more in line with those of past decades, and dare I say, centuries

Honestly with the combination of these factors, I can see this happening at the start of your diet no problemo.

I’ll drink this non stop soon enough ahah…

You can still decorate your home and dress however you like. I’m one of those crazy person that goes out with a jacket and a tie. Just bought myself some golden tie clip and a new tie, I couldn’t resist.

Honestly I have very few interest with most people I hang with: stopped watching TV 10 years ago so zero TV references, don’t listen to rap like every youth here, nor listen to the radio. Zero YouTube culture, or Tiktok or whatever. I’m the old “can’t relate” guy ahahahah

It calculates your macros and calories more accurately and spreads them out over the week in a more intuitive manner so to speak

If i overeat one day, it will take some calories off another or vice versa

That’s only one of the features off the top of my head

Been really effective so far

Financial investment in health will always increase accountability imo

You might enjoy some thoughts that arise out of listening to this video clip

@ChongLordUno that definitely might go on my “ace in the hole” list then.

Work for today:

Jumps: 3 x 5

Hang Clean: 5 x 5 @ 40kg

Press:
5 x 40kg
5 x 45kg
5 x 50kg
9 x 57.5kg (PR)

Trap bar press: 20 x 30kg(?)

Front Squat:
5 x 75kg ss. Dips
5 x 75kg ss. Pull ups
5 x 75kg ss. Dips
5 x 75kg ss. Pull ups
5 x 75kg ss. Dips
5 x 75kg ss. Pull ups
5 x 75kg ss. Dips
5 x 75kg ss. Pull ups
5 x 75kg ss. Dips
10 x 75kg ss. Pull ups

Week 2, day 1 of couch to 5k:

Notes:

  • No extra work today because of an unexpected time crunch. My “easy week off” has become a week looking after my little girl, because CoVid. Which is still easy, but makes training time more difficult to come by.
  • Press PRs getting very grindy and shaky. Will likely need to back up a bit and make another run at this soon.
  • Hang Cleans shockingly light and pointless feeling.
  • Front Squats were a drag, as always. Tried a 10 rep set at the end in preparation for possible ideas for next cycle and that’s a hard pass.
  • Run felt more like the low intensity cardio I assume it’s meant to be. Still unpleasant though.
  • Time to plan next cycle, will cover that in another post later but spoiler alert: it’s likely to be similar but stupider

Do it heavier?

It’s okay, building your base! I don’t “hate” slowish running though. Less than biking or rowing

How is the weight loss going on? I see you’re still having PR in either case so that’s good…

Another one? Must be nice!

@dagill2 @ChongLordUno I saw this recently which explains the difference between the Carbon app and other tracking apps like MyFitnessPal.

Carbon Diet Coach on Instagram: "Carbon uses an advanced coaching algorithm written by myself, my husband Dr. Layne Norton & fellow Dietitian Keith Kraker. Carbon analyses your data & weekly progress, & refines your nutrition recommendations to help keep you on track with your goal!⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ My Fitness Pal (MFP) gives you a one-time initial calorie calculation, or you can use your own macros using the premium paid version ($14.99 USD). The only time MFP will change your calorie target is if you sign in & update your personal info. It determines this using a generic calorie calculator. ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ With Carbon, you select your goal & your preferred weekly rate of weight loss or gain, & monitors your weight changes & your daily intake just like a coach would! It then adjusts your nutrition targets based on actual data & how you are responding! 𝐏𝐥𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 $𝟗.𝟗𝟗😉⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ So while Carbon has been compared to MFP, 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫, but it does have a tracker included for your convenience. ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Carbon also allows you to check your weekly average body weight, calorie intake, protein, carbs & fats which is key for determining compliance. ⁣⠀ ⁣⠀ Not only does Carbon allow you to set custom calories for any day of the week, if you are someone who enjoys calorie cycling, our Calorie Planner feature also helps ensure you don’t exceed your weekly calorie requirements by automatically adjusting your remaining day's targets down to keep you on track with your goal! ⁣⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #carbondietcoach #joincarbon #nutritioncoach #dietcoach #dietcoachingapp #nutritionapp #fitnessapp #nutritioncoaching #newapp #diet #nutrition #healthyliving #healthylifestyle #iifym #ifitfitsyourmacros #macros #macrotracking #flexibledieting #howcarbonisdifferent⠀"

@aldebaran

I’m only doing weekly weigh ins so far, although I should probably go back to twice weekly, I don’t know why I stopped. I lost some weight, but not enough data points to give a definite downwards trend. Trying not to get too invested in weight loss because if i do, i tend to go off the deep end with it.

Absolutely. As a 34 year old, I have a lot of years of not doing cardio to catch up on. Rome wasn’t built in a day. As an extra kick up the arse, I think I’m about to sign up for a 12k obstacle race in October with a bunch of colleagues, so really need to be out of the shit category by then.

@ChickenLittle pretty consistently, yeah. Although it’s worth noting I’ve spent 9+ months building towards these PRs and that PR sets are rarely, if ever, all out efforts. I try to make every PR easy to beat.

@doomyguy thanks man. The trick is to lift light weights, makes it easier to keep beating yourself.

@alex_uk I probably will push harder as I move through the week. I’ve got 50 weeks still to get in decent shape though, no rush.

@Bagsy thanks, still got a lot of work to do though

@caesium32 @ChongLordUno I’m having difficulty picturing how CarbonDiet thing works. The way I use MyFitnessPal is that I input all my meals for the week at the start of the week, then shop and prep accordingly. Could I still do that with CarbonDiet and if so, does it offer any advantages over Myfitnesspal that are worth paying for? I definitely can’t be arsed to use both.

New template time:

I did have a long rambling explanation for all my decisions here, but it was pretty boring and self indulgent so here’s the result:

Day 1:
Jumps
Front Squat 5s PRO ss. Pull ups
Back Squat widowmaker
Supplemental giant set:
Press BBB
Goblet Squats
Swings

Day 2:
Jumps
Press PR sets ss. Pull ups.
Push Press widowmaker
Supplemental giant set:
TBDL BBB
Dips
Rows

“Extra” work, to be worked in wherever:
Jumps
Swings
Pull ups
