Is a running wanker like a bus wanker only without the bus?

It’s a term coined by @mattjp (rest his T-nation soul), to describe people that run for fun and preach on the benefits of running for ā€œclearing their headā€ and other such nonsense. Usually recognised by their use of sweat bands, wearing tights under their shorts and those armband thingies you put your phone in while running so everyone can see how expensive your phone is.

I’m one of them now.

So basically me 5 years ago before I started lifting weights again.

Appreciate it, will go through it in the morning and will tag you if I read anything so you can catch up and we can discuss!

I’m glad I didn’t pick that one. 30 minutes is too much for me right now. I have to build up to that.

I thought it was just so I could listen to music? My fancy Garmin watch can download music now so I can leave my phone at home.

I don’t think I nor anyone else would want me to type out the 250+ books on my to-read list, but here are some of my priorities for this year:

Infinite Jest - David Foster Wallace
Station Eleven - Emily St. John Mandel
Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, Why It Matters, and How to Harness It - Ethan Kross
Ethics - Baruch Spinoza
The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering - Norman Finkelstein
A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches from Chechnya - Anna Politkovskaya
The Question of German Guilt - Karl Jaspers
The Idiot - Fyodor Dostoevsky
C.P. Cavafy: Collected Poems - C.P. Cavafy
Imperium - Ryszard Kapuściński
The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt - Edmund Morris
In Cold Blood - Truman Capote
Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil - Hannah Arendt
Walkable City: How Downtown Can Save America, One Step at a Time - Jeff Speck

Thank you for this @Bagsy

Alternate title: ā€œCity-planning: Europe Editionā€?

This seems like something I’d want to read going by the title alone. Will investigate the others. Again, thank you!

@dagill2

This was already on my list!

and these are on my radar.

Highly recommended !!!

I used to live in an extremely walkable city with exceptional mass transit. I don’t miss it simply because I now live somewhere that almost demands owning a car but also since I am a weirdo who geeks out over public transport. I wish this could be better addressed here.

The author is the son of a Holocaust survivor, so I expect good things from this book. No problem.

Are you particularly interested in WWII?

German and Russian history and philosophy, mostly 20th century stuff.

That’s so cool!
If I didn’t get into the school I’m going to now, I would have been a Russian Studies major.
My favourite country is Germany!

But the 19th century was SO much better.

If you weren’t a factory worker, peasant or a first son

I am referring to in terms of historical epoc: not in terms of existing in the era.

That 30 minutes includes a fair bit of walking. This version is definitely designed for absolute beginners, I just ignore the bit where it says things like ā€œlight jogā€ and go at a ā€œcomfortableā€ run.

That one is really, really good - great choice.

Day 3 of couch to 5k, details below

Notes:

  • Hang Cleans still very light. Will bump TM up for the next cycle and consider adjusting the rep scheme a bit.
  • Front Squat still pretty straightforward, will probably bump TM up appropriately for next cycle
  • Back Squats sucked. Mostly due to a high degree of pain/strain in the neck, same feeling as last time. Need to find a solution to this because its preventing me putting the right kind of effort into these sets.
  • Assistance/supplemental dragged a bit today. Those press sets feel stupidly light, which is nice. Debating switching to a more intensive supplemental set up next cycle, like BBB FSL and a giant set format for this.
  • Run was pretty chilled. Dreaded it going in, and nearly pulled the plug. This was my 4th lifting session and 3rd run in 7 days on a ā€œ2 day a weekā€ template, so maybe not too surprising. Actually did what the nice lady said and kept the running pretty chilled today, didn’t feel awful but then, I wasn’t trying very hard.

Edit:
Looks like me ā€œnot trying very hardā€ on the run brought me in with a very similar time and distance as my other runs so maybe the nice lady is right and trying to turn it into HIIT is stupid.

Edit Edit: I’m started to get excited by new and shiny again. I need to get over it before I have to decide on my next cycle. This one was already a bit too ā€œout thereā€
