10 Albums to Hear Before You Die

Okay, my real list (not really what you MUST hear before you die, just 10 that I like most):

Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Weezer - Maladroit
Black Crowes - Southern Harmony…
Guided By Voices - Earthquake Glue
Black Sabbath (Dio on vocals) - Dehumanizer
Gustav Holst - The Planets
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
U2- All That You Can’t Leave Behind
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Screaming Trees - Uncle Anesthesia

Joe Cocker - Mad Dogs and Englishmen
Little Feat - Waiting For Columbus

Two of the 10 best live recordings of early seventies rock and roll, back in the touring days of bad electronic gear, screaming microphone feedback, no light shows, no digital engineering, just plain old raw rock and roll.

Recently picked up Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks and have really been digging it. Madame George, Ballerina, Astral Weeks, Cypress Ave, Like Young Lovers Do, are great songs.

U2, The Best of 1980 to 1990

U2, The Best of 1990 to 2000

Slayer, Reign in Blood

John Mellencamp’s, Greatest HIts

The Police, Greatest HIts

Don Williams, I Believe in You

Kenny Chesney, Back Where I Come From

Hank Williams Jr., A Country Boy Can Survive

Also, really been into a lot of Seventies music as of late. Lots and lots of good quality stuff there and brings back memories of my childhood.

D

Jethro Tull.

Archive.org has a tasty 1974 recording of Little Feat with Lowell George before he died. Great stuff and free.

A few more:

Wham - Make it Big

David Hasslehoff - Night Rocker

William Shatner - The Transformed Man

D

Miles David - Kind of Blue
Portishead - Dummy
Goldie - Timeless (black)
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Beatles - Abbey Road
Stone Roses - Eponymous
Nirvana - Nevermind
Led Zeplin - Led Zeplin I
Guns N Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are you Experienced.

Each of these albums defined a time and a genre.

In no particular order:

  1. Metallica - Master of Puppets: Probably one of the most influential rock albums of all time. You can listen to it from start to finish and every song is fantastic.

  2. Pantera - Reinventing the Steel: There’s just something about the rawness of this album. It has a similar feel to a typical band’s first album, except with musical talent that is out of this world.

  3. Tool - Lateralus: This album is simply amazing, with a the high point being the song Lateralus. Tool is one of the best in the world in achieving a unique sound and this album is one of the most unique.

  4. Alien Ant Farm - ANThology: You are probably saying WTF, but this is one of the most underrated albums I have ever heard. It was a complete shocker and has great tracks from start to finish.

  5. Misfits - Collection II: This is just a great compilation of music that has influenced thousands of bands.

  6. Alter Bridge - One Day Remains: Combining Miles Kennedy’s voice with Mark Tremonti’s guitar work was a perfect match.

  7. Project 86 - Project 86:From a band you have probably never heard of and sold only 30,000 albums. You will not regret checking this album out. I had to special order it because no one had it. Simple, basic and awesome.

  8. George Strait - Strait Out of the Box: Yes, it is a compilation, but it is 8x platinum. When it comes to country, very few have done what George Strait has.

  9. Stevie Ray Vaughn - Texas Flood: If you have ever even touched a guitar, this album should be in your repertoire.

  10. Flaw - Endangered Species: I really am surprised that this album did not do as well as it should have. This is a great listen from start to finish.

Honorable mentions: Tupac - All Eyez On Me, Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine, Staind - Dysfunction, Ozzy - Bark at the Moon, Killswitch Engage - End of a Heartache.

Seems like you Nirvana fans put Nevermind up there most often. But Bleach was WAY better.

The problem with this is restricting it to just 10 albums. I think I had a pretty solid list, then I see CallMeBruce’s, we have only a couple of overlaps but I can’t disagree with any on his list…

IronDwarf, Bleach may be a better album but I think Nevermind better defined the genre.

I think there should be a rule that says no greatest hits. An Album is something special, the artist chose the particular tracks in that order. A good album takes you on a journey.

This also rules out classical music. Unless it was released by the composer as an album then I’m not allowing it (I know it’s not my thread)

10 non-serious music album

Mahavishnu Orchestra- The Inner Mounting flame
Yes-Close to the edge
Frank Zappa-Hot rats
Soft Machine-third
Pat Metheny-Secret Story
Jaco Pastorius-Jaco Pastorius
Emerson Lake and Palmer-Tarkus
Deep Purple-Made in Japan
Eric Dolphy- Out to lunch
King Crimson- In the court of the crimson king

I laughed my ass off when I saw people listing Alien ant farm and stuff like that

Here’s are a few that I’d add. The first 3 are (deservedly) on most ‘Greatest Albums’ lists but haven’t appeared here yet. The other 2 I just love:

Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Cream - Disraeli Gears
Love - Forever Changes
Django Reinhardt - Djangology
The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God

Here’s more…

Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
Muse - Absolution
Tool - Aenima
Tool - Lateralus
Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow
The Mars Volta - Amputecture
Minus the Bear - Minos El Oso

My father loved that Django album… so much so that he started building acoustic guitars in the gypsy jazz style.
