I guess Rush is prog for people who don’t like prog. Same with Yes’s Starship Trooper. Those are the only two I ever hear on the radio.

I am amazed at how many of the artists listed here that I never heard of. With the exception of the 70’s-80’s bands.
I am a guitar player so most of my picks are based on my appreciation of the guitar work on these albums.
In general music started getting louder and harder after the 80’s. Although some of it is good I just don’t find entire albums to my taste.
Steve Miller - Steve Millers Greatest Hits
Eagles - Eagles Greatest hits
Dire Straights - Down to the Water Line
Stray Cats - Any
Led Zepplin - Any
Van Halen - OU812
Def Leperd - Pyromania
John Cougar - American Fool
Lynard Skynard - Second Helping
Molly Hatchet - Flirting with Disaster
Dates me as an old fart. I know.

You know that Deep Purple is still recording don’t you? Steve Morse is the guitarist.
some stuff you might like
Dropbox - Dropbox

Brand New Sin - Brand New Sin
Fireball Ministry - The Second Great Awakening
Blind Guardian - A Twist In The Myth
may be a bit heavy for you but the guitar work is 1st rate.
Corrosion of Conformity - Deliverance

Just ten off the top of my head without being in any order of importance
Dream Theater - Images and Words
Pagan’s Mind - Enigmatic Calling
Circus Maximus - Isolate
Goo Goo Dolls - Dizzy Up the Girl
Alan Jackson - Who I Am
Atomship - The Crash of '47
Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper
Cold - Year of the Spider
Kamelot - The Black Halo
Seventh Wonder - Mercy Falls
Nice, you mentioned by far the best Bodom album!
Also, the Black Halo is an amazing album.
Great listening.
Thanks man, Follow the Reaper BY FAR my favorite Bodom album (the title track, Children of Decadence, Mask of Sanity etc…) and I am always torn between Epica and The Black Halo, but The Black Halo almost always comes out on top(just can’t beat that collectin of songs for them).
btw, great choice on Ride the Lightning, my fav. Metallica album right there
FTR my fave album because I actually like EVERY single song on it. Especially Everytime I Die, that is a seriously heavy song, and the first time they slowed things down. With Kamelot, it’s hard to choose which one is best.
Karma and Epica are so… amazing it’s hard to explain. If you sit there and listen to them, they actually tell a whole story. However, Black Halo has more of a polished sound to it, which explains it’s greater popularity.
As for Metallica, nothing beats Lightning, everybody says Puppets… no way. Creeping Death? Ktulu? For Whom The Bell Tolls? Unfriggin believable!

Ride the Lightning is sick, but I think Master of Puppets can hold it’s own. Sanitarium, Orion, Master of Puppets, and Battery are all really righteous tunes. Ride the Lightning was the first Metallica album I listened to, and there’s no doubt that it rocked my world. You could pick any Metallica album from the 80’s and make the case for it being the best.
If we’re talking must hear albums from any genre you need to include the following:
Marvin Gaye-What’s Going On
Rolling Stones-Exile on Main St.
The Clash-London Calling
Bruce Springsteen-Born to Run
Nirvana-Nevermind
Michael Jackson-Thriller
Ramones-Ramones
U2-Joshua Tree
The Beatles–Take your pick, too many to choose from
Van Morrison-More than one here too

For one, bands like Yes and King Crimson are better. And Geddy Lee’s voice makes me want to cut out my ear drums, light myself on fire and jump off a cliff. Like I said, it’s prog for people who don’t listen to prog.

Velvet Underground and Nico
Bob Dylan-Highway 61 Revisited
Sounds about right, except I would get Born to run and maybe Who’s Next on there.
If we venture out of Rock, Johnny Cash , Nina Simone, Mile Davis, and or John Coltrane would need to be there.
I know I’m 45, but I would put almost no rock on there int he last 20 years. To me it’s just a rehash and repackaging of stuff that has already been done. Even if we get into Rap/funk/hip hop stuff there’s Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambatta, and George Clinton.
I think these guys have done more for music than the Puffy, Biggie, Nas crowd.
Then there are the Blues guys who everyone in modern music owes a debt of gratitude to, such as Buddy Guy, Diddley, Ray Charles, B.B. King and others.
Yeah, Geebus’s list is pretty good, or rather I agree with every choice. Extra points for Velvet Underground. Yes it could use some jazz and blues.
But has anyone noticed SteelyD is the only one to include any classical music. What’s up with that? No one else thinks that classical is an essential part of the musical canon? And for the record, I think Bach’s lute suites are far more enjoyable than his cello suites.
I love classical but felt that a favorite album has a lot to do with who performs and conducts. My favorite performance of Water Music was by St Martin-in-the-Fields but it was done using modern instruments. There are some that would say this is an abomination. Here is a short list of some of my favorite pieces.
Dvorak - Symphony No. 9(New World Symphony)
Mussorgsky - Pictures At An Exhibition(I know some will ask “why not Boris Godunov?” I just prefer Pictures :P)…
For this list, I guess Boris Godunov wasn’t.
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced?
The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium
The Mars Volta - Francis the Mute
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Radiohead - OK Computer
Radiohead - In Rainbows
The Gorillaz - Demon Days
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step

I do have some blues-influenced bands on the list, but I agree they are not strictly blues. I don’t have many blues albums but am trying to build my collection. The same can be said for jazz. I had never really listened to it until I went and saw a small jazz combos concert at the University of Utah. It was awesome.
I am not much of a Springsteen fan, but I agree that Who’s Next is amazing.

I am glad that you like the my taste in the Velvet Underground. I was debating on either the Velvet Underground and Nico or White Light/White Heat but decided on the latter.

Coltrane - Giant Steps
Michael Brecker - Tales from the Hudson
Michael Brecker - Time is of the Essence
