Your Top 3 RPG's

Hell of a question. I mean, does Mass Effect really count as an RPG? I’m going to, for my sake, assume it doesn’t. Also… what about Zeldas like Ocarina of Time?

1.) FFVII (lol duh)
2.) Kingdom Hearts
3.) Legend of Gaia (oh yeah, all of you forgot about that one.)

Honorable: FFVIII, Dragon Age: Origins, Fallout 3, and Ocarina of Time, Chrono Trigger.

  1. Chrono Trigger
  2. Final Fantasy II/IV
  3. KOTOR

I also go back and play A Link to the Past on an emulator sometimes too. That game is pretty awesome. I haven’t gotten into too much of the more modern stuff because the first one I checked out, FF X, was extremely dramatic and wussy IMO.

Really might check out Dragon Age: Origins when it drops in price though

waiting for wow to get mentioned.

good choices. all three of those fall into the JRPG category, while Mass Effect falls into the WRPG category.

The main differences between the two are that, as a general rule of thumb, JRPG’s are linear and have turn based combat, as well as limited physical customization.

WRPG’s are usually less linear, and allow for full character customization as well as all the perks of a JRPG such as leveling and class specialization. Most westerns are also real time combat.

zelda is a unique creature and falls outside of the RPG classes. It’s a classic take of The Hero’s Journey, so I’d say it’s an Epic.

If you actually kept up with all of the lore in the Warcraft saga it’s not bad, just all of the people with no lives have made a bad name for it now.

1.Final Fantasy 7
2.Suikoden 2: Great Great game
3. Mass Effect

Close Calls: Fallout 3, KOTAR, MonsterSeed: Absolutely loved that game

honestly, any game with a main character is a role playing game.

Diablo 2! I spent way too much goddamn time on that game. Even though the story actually sucked, it was a very fun game. Love the character and item system and dueling haha

Oblivion had a great story/involvement factor to it but I didn’t like the levelling system and the scaling difficulty (why could I become an arch mage at level 2 if i wanted?)

pretty much anything put out by White-Wolf before they ran their Armageddon/Gehenna/Apocalypse storyline and changed everything.

And then after that, Rifts. I’m pretty sure I put Kevin Simbeibia’s kids through college.

Dragon Warrior 3

Finally someone who knows what proper RPGs are. I personally was always a fan of Swordbearer (a little known Runequest clone), CoC and … Star Trek (from FASA, ICON - I’m now playing Decipher).

Pen & paper ftw!

Makkun

PS: Simbeida rocks - Palladium was brilliant.

It is still technically an rpg, it revolutionized the genre. I understand where you’re coming from though, I wasn’t sure if I wanted it on my list because of that.

The entire suikoden series is good (except possibly 4, the random encounter rate was WAY too high).

FF7 is number one, everything else will always be a battle for second place. You could honestly not even care about video games and just play it for the story. I remember cutting school in 7th or 8th grade to play this one.

For 2nd and 3rd I would have to go Suikoden 2 (whoever mentioned that gets props in my book, extremely underrated game) and Final Fantasy: Tactics. Tactics is only fun if you don’t use the unique characters like Agrias and the other dude (I wanna call him Cid but not sure if that’s actually his name) who was basically a good. They make the game too easy, but if you don’t use them it’s one of the hardest games and one where you actually need to use strategy and thought to win the battles rather than mindlessly mashing O; one of my few criticisms of FF7.

I’m also going to throw out an old-school classic here that I bet almost nobody has played. Shining Force 2, for Sega Genesis. The first one was pretty good as well, but the second is the real deal. You can find it on most emulator sites. I guarantee anybody who’s a fan of RPGs will enjoy it. My only recommendation is to play it on the hardest difficulty setting: the other ones won’t offer enough of a challenge to make it fun by the time you get to the end.

Everquest. Only one I have played so no top 3 to list.

I’ve never been much into RPG:s but Earthbound for SNES.

jtrinsey mentioned the Shining Force series for Genesis (Megadrive in Europe). I had forgotten but those (or at least one of them) are some of the rare RPG:s I actually had the patience to beat and I suppose they merit a mention.

There’s also one relatively obscure SNES title the name of which I cannot remember. I never beat it.

  1. FF7
  2. Fallout 3
  3. FF 8 and X

Dragon age origins sucked
Never played it but I heard Morrowind is amazing

Baldur’s Gate 2 >>> All.

Dragon Age: Origins had the potential to be one of the best games of all time, but Bioware messed it up beautifuly. To much hack and slash, oh man, I was sick after first few hours.

But the Urn quest rocked, dragon fight >>> all, and Flemeth “arc” is also great.

No one here liked FF9? I played that game to death when I was a in grade 7. I really liked the visual/art style they went with (back to its roots)

FF7 will always be my favorite. I think I was in Grade 3 when it was released. The game’s world felt absolutely endless and the story felt so big. At the time, I thought that the entire game was going to take place in Midgar…

The game today feels small…sometimes I wish I was a kid again and rediscover games like this. Games today just don’t have that same effect anymore. :stuck_out_tongue:

The Metal Gear Solid series…I know it isn’t an “RPG” but I thought it was worth mentioning! AWESOME SERIES!
