Your IQ?

I believe that most of those guys had some minor autism, it’s some really insane stuff (no pun intended) I worked in a clas with autistics, most of them can spell anything or do unreal math with practically 0 proper education. Also I don’t think that the merging of hemispheres would do much.

I think I read (in a T-Nation article) that the brain grows about 60% or something by the time you walk and talk, and all this having to do with networking, and sending signals.

This thread sucks.

It would be interesting to see just how successful the MENSA dorks are in real life? I would wager that the most successful people have average IQ’s. Having great potential doesn’t mean you have the emotional intelligence to live up to that potential. That explains why that dorky dude you know who has a 190 IQ works in the video store and lives with his mother![/quote]

Actually, you can graph IQ as correlating positively with almost every measure of success in life. Successful marriages, higher income, better health, and so on increase with IQ - to a point.

Of course, we can all think of the really smart dork who can’t make it in the real world. But most smart people are successful, if only because they are in competition with less intelligent people. The ethnic group with the highest average I.Q. is eastern european jews. Jewish people are over represented in high status and high income professions as a percentage of population.

Negative life outcomes and decisions also correlate positively with low I.Q.s:
teen-age pregnancy, smoking, illigitimate births, drug use, alcoholism, obesity. and so on.

A quick search reveals this chart, which makes sense to me:

140 Top Civil Servants; Professors and Research Scientists.
130 Physicians and Surgeons; Lawyers; Engineers (Civil and Mechanical)
120 School Teachers; Pharmacists; Accountants; Nurses; Stenographers; Managers.
110 Foremen; Clerks; Telephone Operators; Salesmen; Policemen; Electricians.
100+ Machine Operators; Shopkeepers; Butchers; Welders; Sheet Metal Workers.
100- Warehousemen; Carpenters; Cooks and Bakers; Small Farmers; Truck and Van Drivers.
90 Laborers; Gardeners; Upholsterers; Farmhands; Miners; Factory Packers and Sorters.

Even given the above, however, I will always bet on personal character, work ethic and determination over I.Q.

If you have a high I.Q. plus the above, you are guaranteed to win.

135 on the Stanford-Binet. I guess I’m slightly smarter than Sharon Stone. I also did the test after working night shift three in a row with little sleep. I had higher scores when I was younger…hmph…I guess it could be age-related brain degerative changes. That, or working nights in a crazy ER and being chronically sleep deprived (my brain gets too lazy to have to think after work, it just wants to go to sleep!).

The score does make sense per the table below, I am a nurse (120) and I did get accepted into law schools (130) when I was 20-21 years old, and always fantasize about being a surgeon (130)- either Cardiovascular or Cosmetic (boobies doctor). Hehe, thankfully I changed my mind about being a lawyer…only kidding, law t-peeps.

IQ SCORES IN TERMS OF OCCUPATION:
140
Top Civil Servants; Professors and Research Scientists.

130
Physicians and Surgeons; Lawyers; Engineers (Civil and Mechanical)

120
School Teachers; Pharmacists; Accountants; Nurses; Stenographers; Managers.

110
Foremen; Clerks; Telephone Operators; Salesmen; Policemen; Electricians.

100+
Machine Operators; Shopkeepers; Butchers; Welders; Sheet Metal Workers.

100-
Warehousemen; Carpenters; Cooks and Bakers; Small Farmers; Truck and Van Drivers.

90
Laborers; Gardeners; Upholsterers; Farmhands; Miners; Factory Packers and Sorters

What’s an IQ score in terms of occupation?

Mine is around the level of a professor and research scientist, according to that scale…but I’m dyslexic, and took a standard standord-binet (not skewed to account for my type of dyslexia), so if it was, I’d likely do quite a bit better.

Again, though…it’s only a measure of the rate at which we’re capable of learning.

Also…there’s a very good reason MENSA doesn’t accept online IQ tests as valid. Hint: You don’t have to be in MENSA to figure out why…

No…I don’t go to RG’s and I’m not a member of any SIGs.

I recently contacted Tom about putting my book in the Books section of the next MENSA bulletin. I was going to try to get in the summer issue of the bulletin as an athlete (August)…but was too lazy. Before that I was going to try to get in for the issue with all the tattoo and piercin stuff…

Not to hijack, but I just watched for the first and second time, that show called, “Beauty and the Geek” and I have to Rant. I guess at different facilities, I’ve worked with so many of the “intellectually inclined”- some of the docs I’ve worked with and some of my friends are very much brainiacs, not only with medicine but also lots of other things- like walking talking encyclopedias about everything and anything, which a lot of women find irresistable. Well, I was looking at the Geeks thinking, “he’s kinda cute- hey, he looks like that cute internist so and so, and he looks like that cute radiologist, etc…” And when the girls started talking, I immediately felt totally turned off and asked myself, “how are those girls hot?” “WHAT DO THOSE GUYS SEE IN THOSE GIRLS?”

I picured the guys in ten years and the girls in ten years-- the guys successful Neurologists, engineers, college professors…the girls (well I don’t want to mention)…but in ten years, those “Geeks” will have successful careers, money, have blossomed and be considered Cream of the Crop by the single gals-- many of them will prolly be gym frequents, etc… and the gals, well, I don’t think the Geeks would even look twice at them. Well, some of the geeks will prolly still be geeky and skinny and socially ackward for the rest of their lives. Same goes for some young geeky girls…I know some female former geeks who are now successful and “hot” looking as well…kinda like that sexy librarian thing.

Chinadoll, I don’t think this is what you were saying, but I’m going to go off on a tangent:

I’ve always found it funny that in movies, the reason you shouldn’t be mean to the “nerds” and “geeks” is that they will one day be attractive and have money. Rather than saying that the system through which we establish value is incorrect or unfair (attractiveness), the emphasis is instead placed on the POSSIBILITY of those people possessing that kind of value later on.

I suppose if someone were to be a nerd or geek in high school, and never “blossomed” into an attractive guy… well, he’d be a worthy object of derision?

As comforting as the whole “revenge of the nerds” idea might be for some people, it’s a pipe dream. Very few people live happy, fulfilled lives, and people who are born with both high intelligence and good looks have the odds well-stacked in thier favor – even then, it requires a lot of hard work and more than a little luck to really be happy with life.

For those of us who were not similarly blessed, it’s just less realistic. A functional autistic can “get by” by memorizing people’s reactions and what those reactions are supposed to mean. The autistic uses the logical part of his brain to compensate for his inability to pick up on social cues. But you won’t find many autistics who are gregarious, fun-loving guys with tons of friends and girlfriends. It’s unlikely that he’ll ever have a “normal” life.

I’ve read the studies that show that intelligence does not seem to be correlated with social impairment or poor physical well-being. I think that’s probably true. I also know a lot of guys who are smart but socially awkward; some of it is a defense mechanism, some of it is just the inability to relate to other human beings.

I don’t believe that women honestly wake up one day and decide to be attracted to these sorts of guys. I don’t think women, for the most part, really care about intelligence (there are some exceptions). Many care about looks, many care about money, many care about prestige. And perhaps men with high intelligence are more likely to acquire these sorts of things, and as a result, to “attract” women in a wholly artificial way.

me wrote is own iq test i put it on myspace web thing. now me iq 1138

i am so smrt!

That would be cool to see some articles in there on strength and conditioning. Maybe something on the functions of test in the brain. Who knows? I bet that there are a lot of different directions that could take.

Maybe the women is just a regional thing.

I’m not talking about a budding flower, I mean one chair per cheek and zits.
That aside, I definitely pass on the shiney little dingbats for a woman who is intelligent and sociable. Not necessarily superfreaky hot, but she has to be able to hold her own in a conversation.

While I could pretty much agree with you because what you say is pretty true, I would’nt find it surprising that there is an inverse correlation once you start to get up into supergenius…look at einstein, he supposedly had an child out of wedlock and sent it off for abortion, he never spoke until he was 3 either (not important but interesting) then there is the ridculously overlooked William James Sidis, if you have’nt heard of him do a search or get the book the prodigy, he was said to be the smartest human to live (in this century also) with an IQ of 250-300, in fact some people who study evolution believe he is actually a revelation of the next frontier of humans “neo-sapiens”. At his peak of study languages for a hobby he spoke 40 languages fluently and was said to be able to learn a language in a day…He also led a mishapen life, being arrested at 15 and protesting government in favour of socialism and being enrolled at harvard at this age, he also gave his first anatomical seminar at harvard at the age of 12, and completed highschool at 8 years old in 6 weeks…this is all serious shit, go check it out…and currently the smartest living person is Marilyn Vos Savant, with an IQ of 218 and some amazing writings…

You totally don’t need an IQ of 120 to be a grade school teacher. A score of 100 will probably get you by as a school teacher.

i busted that iq scale with a -13!

au contraire monfraire! a quotient of two positive numbers can’t end up negative.

well, i just changed that. it’s the internet, and i can do whatever i want.

on page 4, i think telling children at a young age that they are gifted is bad news. we had a “gifted program” where i grew up. by and large it was the artsy fartys types, and thus i wasn’t included. but those kids were being taken out of the “real world” before they know what was up.

so either i think it is a bad idea, or i am 20 years embittered for not being selected.

at least i was never told that i was “mildy retarded.”

Dan,
You didn’t miss too much. All we did was make paintings, stupid little acting videos, play some games for smart kids, etc. I would rather have stayed in class and continue to look at Playboys stashed in my duotang folder.

DB

My girlfriend and I once considered joining MENSA, so I looked into it. I came across a program they had, where they would mentor gifted children in schools. One guy wrote about how he didn’t fit in is school, and he was bullied because he was smarter. He said it ment so much to him to know he wasn’t a freak, and to have another genius keep him company. What BS! Boohoo, you were treated like a genius.

How about helping underprivileged kids? Or tutoring kids that are having problems in school? No, that wouldn’t allow them to have pity parties while at the same time imagining they are better than everyone else. This program, and that guys story, completely turned me off from ever joining MENSA.

Don’t spout your high IQ then come on here with incoherent arguments and slag talkin.

I guess I could have saved this all by saying that I dislike braggers…that’s all. So I decided to pick apart your foolish statement. I guess no one really reads these posts anymore they just assume that OAC is some sort of universal standardization, when it really means take an extra year to sort your life out. Also, if you’ve been in ontario, you should have know what they are if you used them as a gauge to reference. If you didn’t go to high school here, you have no right to use that as a a measure.

I realize this is going to go on for another three pages…so I’ll jsut say I won’t be responding. Tough luck on the hurt ego!
