I knew what you meant.

I do believe that most people’s “internal moral compass” is largely set by their environment and personal experiences.

Atheist would still be a possibility, might even be a lot more in Iran than are reported. Christian instead of Muslim would be a lot more unlikely. So this question really only applies to someone whos religion is the most popular in their current country.

No it doesn’t.
sufiandy wrote:

That also implies ‘possibly not.’

There is a high probability that Sloth would not be Christian/Catholic if born and raised in Iran.

I can only guess, but I think you meant to say that you believe most peoples “internal moral compass” is largely set by “brainwashing”.

Hence I will echo from another member that yes, this thread is stupid. You could consider anything religion or belief to be “brainwashing”. Is the Easter bunny brainwashing? How about your or my kids birthdays, should singing a congratulatory song filled with love and respect be also labeled as “brainwashing”?

Clearly a thread meant to troll on…by probably some idiot kid or kid at heart who took some sort of “modern philosophy & religion” class at their local community college who thinks they are so damn “thoughtful”.

Well, back to Iran I shall go, neither a muslim or christian - but…who really cares? I’m just brainwashed anyway no matter what direction I choose, or what my parents choose as my “upbrining” values in life…this thread could go on for pages and pages…keeping my fingers crossed it shall die on page 3, no more than that please or else the brainwashing on spin cycle shall begin. My aging mind and heart can only handle so much

I’ll repeat what I said before. I was raised a Christian. I drifted from my faith for a year or so and then I came back to it. I made a conscientious decision to believe in God, not because I was brain washed or tricked like so many of you critics would like to say I was.

I’d like the OP to tell us just where his internal moral compass comes from. No fair borrowing now from thousands of years of Western religious and philosophical thought. I want to know how a thinking man such as yourself develops his own fully formed internal moral system from the top of an ivory tower in the middle of the ocean on an island of self.
ranengin wrote:

Upbringing sure is a powerful thing. It can turn a child into a muslim or a christian or a racist or a headhunter.
Or a fibroblaster.

Well, I was hoping for an honest ‘yes’ to the question. With that in hand, I could say he was ‘brainwashed’ by living in the much more secular and open west.

“If you think it’s possible you’d be a muslim had you been born in Iran, you just might be brainwashed.”

Gees, I’m sensing alot of hate from those who have been filled to the brim with the love of Jesus.

So because something seems designed or planned to you, it must be?

Instead of rationalizing your beliefs, how about you look at the evidence?

I get my morals from an understanding of reality, not an assertion of authority.

To the die hard Christians here at T-Nation…

Your “internal moral compass” has been set by your environment and personal experiences.

If you agree with this statement, do you agree that you would most likely be a Muslim if you had been born and raised in Iran?
For me, this has a rather simple answer. Your internal compass is set by your beliefs, which can be influenced by what you experience in your life.

Jesus commanded us to go forth and preach to the entire earth, sharing the good news about the Kingdom of God. (Mathew 28:19,20)

For Jehovah’s Witnesses (Christians), we spent, last year, 1.7 billion hours doing that very thing. Therefore, we share this knowledge and those that wish to accept it, do. Accepting this knowledge means adjusting your belief system, and therefore, your moral compass.

You may start a certain way, but that doesn’t mean you will remain that way. (1 Cor 6:9-11)
