It’s a scientific fact that the best movies were made in the 1980s: The Goonies, Uncle Buck, Stripes, The Jerk, et al.
I consider the 1980s to be from 1979-1990.

i disagree.
Casablanca — can’t believe this was metioned only one time. Talk about quotable. Great dialog, great plot, great setting, great camera work
Runner ups:
The Unforgiven — best Western, ever
Shindler’s List – but I refuse to watch it again, talk about draining
Blade Runner
Saving Private Ryan
Citizen Kane – just for the camera work
Rocky (the original)
Raging Bull
The Exorcist

Have to disagree here. While it is a great movie, much less western, it isn’t the best.
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly has a better plot and musical score along with a truly classic and epic climax. A climax which I would put up against any other from movies past.
Not to mention the build up to the aforementioned climax - the Mexican Standoff - is fantastic. I have seen this movie more times than I can count and the Mexican Standoff makes the malaki little hairs on my neck stand end-wise.
The Wild Bunch is also just as good, if not better, than Unforgiven.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was on my list until the very end when I deleted it. It really comes down to the gun fights are not realistic in the GB&U.
I am no IDF Rambo, but I was in combat, and it’s just fucking scary, terrible, and you cheat the absolute the best you can. I shot four guys running a Kassam (a rocket launcher — used to lob missles randomly into civilian homes) while they were all taking a piss. It was ugly and scary and bloody. I damn near shit my own pants and had nightmares that I missed, all sorts of shit, for a good year. (I wasn’t even supposed to be forward; I was what amounted to a construction foreman – we built things for tanks and bulldozers to travel on to go and fight.)
Which is also why a lot of war movies don’t make the list — the fake combat is stupid. Probably the only one that had the “feel” was the first 10 minutes of Saving Private Ryan.
Anyway, GB&U is an excellent movie, I agree. The gunplay was weak. Real gunfights are about shooting a guy in the shitter.

Raging bull, once upon a time in america, the untouchables, scarface, scent of a woman, Batman, ghost busters, back to the future, beetle juice, and probably more.

The Spaghetti Westerns (especially those from the Dollars trilogy) are supposed to portray a “mythic” west so I guess accurate depictions of “gun play” are not always going to be shown.
If you are more partial to realistic gun fights, I would suggest Sam Peckinpah’s classic, the Wild Bunch, if you haven’t seen it already.
You might like the Cross of Iron (one of Peckinpah’s last films). This movie is great in its depiction of the Eastern Front as the German Army is retreating in 1943. Very realistic, especially for a low-budget film.
Plus, it has one of my all time favorite actors in James Coburn, playing the lead role. ![]()

It is a scientific fact that the 1980s took place between January 1, 1980 and December 31, 1989. While I’m no scientist, I’m pretty sure that excludes every date in 1979.

^you sure about that? Sounds a little shoddy. Might need a second opinion on that one. What kind of calander did you use to figure that out? I’m going by the Gregorian calendar if that helps.

Fixed.
Yes, indeed. Hurt Locker was VERY GOOD. Saw it on the plane. If you gonna fly, fly Korean Air.
So many good movies out there. Gotta stick with the basics though…
Tie: Star Wars (original III Triology) and Kill Bill.
