I would imagine those are pull ups with a kip. That said, I can’t kip to save my life.

5 rounds of 25 pull ups though… can you do that? I can’t. That WOD would probably take me 45 minutes. If you can do it in 5-10 minutes, I’m impressed.
Ya… That one might be a little rough. I doubt I can do the pull-ups at my current level of conditioning. I’ll probably modify it at first.
*I’ll probably pick a different one, I didn’t really think that through…

I’m not accusing or anything, cause I’m pretty sure you’re pro-crossfit, but I never understood why people bash crossfitters for using kips in their pull ups, as if they don’t know any better.

Because they’re not pull ups, yet they flop on the bar like a fish 100 times and call them that.

Again, why does it matter how they do pull ups? They’re two different movements. Do you also have problems with low bar squats, deadlift suits, and full squat jerks instead of split jerks?
Truth be told, it does look somewhat silly, but shit, just because they’re doing 50 kipping pull ups doesn’t mean they can’t do 20 real ones. Similarly, elite powerlifters are still gonna be brutally strong without drugs.

So why do you do kipping pull-ups instead of pull-ups? It can’t be because it’s cardio, because a lot of things can be effective cardio. Lying down and rising up 200 times is good cardio.

I for one don’t do kipping pull ups, but I’d imagine the reason for doing kipping in crossfit solely is due to the fact that regular pull ups are extremely difficult to do supersetted with an abundance of other power exercises. Regular pull ups have severe diminished returns with regard to getting repetition in the face of fatigue. Kipping allows them to keep the intensity up obviously.
Truth be told, it’s just a movement. As long as it stays within context of crossfit, I’ll be happy lol.

What pulling do you even see there in that video? Now to be fair not every crossfitter performs them like that, but all I see is swinging. He looks like hes being repeatedly electrocuted 100 times. Of course it’s easier because it’s NOT a pull up. As long as the grip is there, any average gym goer can master their momentum and perform these. I don’t have a problem with the movement itself, whatever suits your goals I guess. It’s when a 138lb dude flops and swings on a pull up bar like a fish out of water 106 times and calls them pull ups is where I have a problem. My rationale may sound a bit strange, but it’s just the way I feel about them. It gives those who don’t know any better the wrong idea of what a real pull up actually entails.
And no, not everyone that can do 50 of those can do 20 real pull ups. Not even close actually. I know dozens who could rep out 50 of those and barely do 10 actual pull ups. Because when they actually need to engage their lats, the strength just isnt there. And if they can, it’s most likely because of what they did before performing whatever it is you wanna call that. Your average crossfitter isn’t those you see in the crossfit games. Hell most top competitors don’t even involve a great deal of crossfit in their training.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem with crossfit. I did it for 2 years. The cons just outweighed the pros for me and brought my gains to a drastic halt and eventual decrease. I blame it on poor coaching and dieting info given to me by certified coaches along with lack of research on my own part. I was still rather new to lifting at the time. I was under recovered almost daily and starving myself due to the paleo delusion years back, but I wanted to try a different approach. And that was probably after watching the crossfit games the first year lol I know. My conditioning was the best it probably will ever be, and I was incredibly lean, but I was small and weak. I’m already short so that didn’t suit my goals with my physique.
Since I said goodbye to crossfit, i’ve put on 30lbs of muscle in 2 years with minimal fat gain. I don’t regret doing it because I realized it wasn’t for me and didn’t suit my goals I had for myself. I don’t mind doing a short WOD for conditioning and mobility work every now then though.
About six months ago I programmed 4 WODs into my 5/3/1 to kick the shit out of my fitness, Similar to USMC’s set up I did
Military press 5/3/1
weighted dips 5x10
weighted chins 5x10 (or any rowing movement you feel)
FRAN 21-15-9 of Thrusters at 40kg and chin ups, I allowed a bit of bounce but not a ‘kip’
Deadlift 5/3/1
back extensions 5x10
abs 5x10
DIANNE 21-15-9 100kg deadlift and handstand pushups
Bench 5/3/1
weighted dips 5x10
weighted chins 5x10
LYNNE 5x max bodyweight bench and chin ups (strict)
Squat 5/3/1
back extensions 5x10
abs 5x10
HAMMER (the worst of the bunch) 5 rounds of 60kg
5 power clean, 10 front squat, 5 push press/jerk, 20 chin up (again, allowed some bounce, no kip)
No injuries to speak of with that set up. Mobility increased greatly, as did vo2 max and general fitness.
Just don’t be afraid to suck at first…fran nearly killed me at first but I eventually got it down to 4:20.
doubt I could do it in 6:00 now…
I think crossfit gets hammered with negativity, but I totally support the ‘get hard work done’ mentality of a brutal wod. There is no rest, only reps.

Devil Dog in me won’t allow it ![]()
I did Fran last night and I didn’t really kip, but I was using my legs way more than I normally do. It was tougher than I thought it’d be.

Ya, I’d say I’m pro-crossfit at this point. Honestly, it’s just my ideology I guess. I don’t have a problem with crossfitters doing kipping pull-ups, but it isn’t a pull-up. I guess that’s my problem with it. Call it a “fish out of water” or something just not a pull-up because it isn’t one.

5-10 minutes is exactly what I was thinking. I’ll check them out, thanks.
Some other ideas to consider instead of full-out WODs:
Doubles or triples EMOM for 10 minutes can be pretty rough.
Thibaudeau has also written about getting a new appreciation for basic high rep work from CF. Not necessarily the 500-rep challenge from his article yesterday, just 20-30 reps with a decent-ish weight in minimum time.
jasmincar wrote:

Like I said yesterday…
^ Thibaudeau’s article titled “Kipping Pull-ups: The Truth”.
Great analogy from that article: “A kipping pull-up is to a pull-up what the push press is to the strict overhead press.”
If you’ve ever been struggling to finish a set of chins and kicked your knees up for a boost for the last rep or two, you basically just did some inefficient kipping chin-ups.
There’s technically a difference between kipping pull-ups and butterfly pull-ups, with the butterfly being the most advanced/most body english version. Spealler, the dude in that video above, is pretty much seen as the guy who invented/popularized the butterfly technique, for use in competition.
After seeing some of the you-tube videos, the biggest benefit I’ve seen is that CF might be a good way to meet girls. Lets be honest, you don’t really see alot of hot chicks running around in tiny sports bras and booty shorts at power-lifting meets.

I understand the dislike for the exercise on a personal level, but really the negative attitude towards crossfitters and kipping pull ups is a bit irrational. There’s more people out there who are very misinformed on a plethora of exercises than there are people who are well informed and well endowed in lifting. There’s no reason to get upset over the idiots who call it a pull up because they simply don’t know any better, since you might as well apply that discontent to noobs who don’t touch their chest when they bench, or squat 1/4 depth. It’s not like they’re formulating deep ruminating thoughts and writing essays on why kipping pull ups should be one in the same with regular pull ups lol.
As long as they keep that shit in crossfit, and as long as I don’t feel threatened by a 98lb girl doing 30lb axle clean and presses with fifteen 10lb bumpers on each side, I’ll keep my heat on crossfit at bay. Until then, WHEEEEEEE!! (not picking fun, pretty sure we’re on the same page, just different ways of expressing lol).
Thanks Chris.
