there are a lot of variables when comparing the two.
-most gyms don’t have very heavy dumbells.
- are your dumbell pressing including the lifting off the floor, laying back and then pressing?
-once the dumbells get up in weight, your grip is very wide compared to a normal bench.
that being said, my gym has dumbells that go up to 140’s. I can do those for around 20-25 reps. my flat bench is around 520 with a pause.

Meat, you just had to come over from our thread to make everyone feel like a school girl, huh?
BB bench max=300 w/ pause
DB bench “max”=3 sets of 5 w/ 130s or 1 set of 15 w/ 110s, doing what Meat described above as far as set-up.

I’m here for you if you ever need help getting those pitiful numbers up to a respectable level.
thanks… I don’t live very far from you so it won’t be a long trip. :)
Ah, don’t worry about the distance. I’ll consult you on line. PM me for my modest rates.
For that matter, I offer my services to anyone benching less than 600 lbs. Don’t ask how much I bench, though, that is a guarded secret.
360 x 4 barbell bench (don’t do 1-reps any more.
140’s for many reps
I don’t usually do flat db bench b/c my gym only goes to 140’s. I usually use the 130’s or 140’s for inclines.
BTW, I’m currently 186 @ 5.8% BF.

Anybody have an idea of transfer from Iso-Hammer Smith Bench Machines to a Bench press?
Smith machine is a waste.
I like Hammer Machines except the chest press machines don’t hold enough weight. I can do 410 (4 45’s and a 25 on each side) with the Incline Hammer for 8-10 reps. Now what? There’s no more room for plates! I can add a thin 35 instead of the 25 but that’s a 20lb jump and I can’t reasonably do it.
I don’t get it. Hammer should make those plate holders longer. The Hammer Leg Press is also a problem.
Warning, novice posting!
I’m not sure exactly what my ratio is right now but the last time I was doing straight bar bench and dumbbells at the same time I could do 35lbx10 for dumbbells and 95lbx6 for barbell.
Right now I’m doing 50lbx8 for dumbbells, but I haven’t touched a straight bar for bench in many months. I would guesstimate it at around 120-130lbs.
