Fair enough.

Okay… now.

Shift in topic, what ever happened with your quest to get a handle on your resting heart rate? Did I miss a wrap-up? Did work or did you turn into a quitting quitter who quits?

to be fair those leggings are pretty incredible so if @anon50325502 wants to post photos in them he’s allowed to.

The heart rate thing fell by the wayside when I decided that I was going for an old school bulk/cut approach. The cut planned to start next year will involve 3 or 4 LISS cardio sessions a week so I’m thinking the heart rate thing’ll take care of itself.

The master plan is once I’m lean and sexy looking I’ll put less focus on trying to add mass, and put much more emphasis in getting strong, healthy and mobile.

Ummmmm, where can I get me a set of those!

Oh Jesus, I just clicked on a site called Meggings… FML…

Hey Yog’s.

Just letting you know I got an MRI done on my lumbar spine and as expected there was some bulging at L4/L5 and general wear and tear of the area. Surprisingly the SI joint was normal. Lol.

I was really active as a kid growing up which probably has not made the situation better. Where you an active kid?

Im kind of going of your advice that MRI may not be that specific, as I don’t feel I need to stop training as long as I am not aggravating the injury. Would you agree?

yo dude, yeah I saw you’d posted the results; I’d been meaning to reply.

The language they used was all “mild” and “moderate” so in my completely uninformed opinion you’re probably fine.

I mean as long as what you’re doing doesn’t cause pain, then what could the harm be? And if it does cause pain then work out why it’s causing it and then fix that so it doesn’t again.

That’s basically the approach I’m taking.

And no, I was the least active kid ever. I think that was actually a big part of why my back started getting sore in the first place. My posture was TERRIBLE from spending my life hunched over playing computer games.

All mighty Yogi,I have to ask for your wisdom

I have a bud that asked me for a lifting routine,I gave him an upper lower that’s mostly strength based but didn’t liked it one bit.He wants something with high-ish volume, and probably legs no more than once per week. How would you have such guy train?I think he lifts for a year or so but he benches less than 200 lbs and not sure if he squats at all

Make it as fun for him as possible, so it’ll probably just have to be the classic chest & tri’s, back & bi’s, legs and shoulders.

That seems to be the way that most younger guys like to train, as it means leaving the gym with a sick pump in whichever bodypart they trained, and even if they skip leg day (which the always will) they’re still in the gym 3 days feeling like they’ve accomplished something.

So something like:

Chest:

-Bench (obviously)
-Incline Dumbbells
-Dips
-Some kind of flye
-Pushdowns
-Overhead extensions

Back

-Chins
-Neutral Grip Pulldowns
-Barbell Row
-Dumbbell Row
-Barbell Curls
-Hammer Curls

Legs:

-Squats
-Leg Press
-Leg Curls
-Maybe a single leg thing. Could do it on the Smith for the sake of easiness.
-abs

Shoulders

-Barbell Military
-Arnold Press (young dudes love the Arnolds for some reason)
-Laterals
-Rear Delt Flyes
-A zillion different shrugs (only thing young dudes love more than bench)

Or something. 3-5 sets per exercise, 8-12 reps a piece

so my back injury has gotten steadily worse over the last couple of days, so I think I’m looking at a week off from leg training at the least. The plan was to try again on Sunday but I can’t see it happening. I’m really hurting today.

My belt arrived today though so that’s something. I did a few sets of bodyweight squats with it on, and it’s super weird.

One thing I’ve noticed which I think’ll be a big help is the proprioceptive feedback the whole time. Like you know to keep your core pushed out against it the entire time. I feel like one of my problems at the moment is losing core tightness in the hole so I reckon the belt’s going to help fix that.

Forum’s are a weird thing. Like, I speak to the people on here pretty much daily, and for the most part it’s the same <10 people.

I remember years ago I posted on another forum that was a bit more geared towards general health and lifting for the sake of staying strong and healthy your whole life. We had a moderator there who was cool as fuck; he was this gnarly old Olympic lifter guy but he’d done a bit of powerlifting, bodybuilding, you name it. He was brilliant; really helpful and his advice was always really simple like “eat, lift, repeat.” He was well into things like the Gironda method, GVT, proper old school training brutality.

But one day the regular posters noticed he hadn’t posted in a long time, and the other mods checked his activity and saw he hadn’t signed in for ages. After a few more weeks we all started to get worried, and the mods even started a private thread which only the regular posters could see, asking if anyone had heard from him.

The main mod managed to track down a phone number, and made a call just to check if he was alright. Turned out he’d passed away around the time we all noticed his absence.

It was weird because I’d never met the guy, didn’t even really know his full name, didn’t know anything about him other than he was a big fan of lifting weights, his dogs, and classic rock music, but I’d spoken to him near enough every day, and I mourned his passing like I would have anyone else I cared about.

I eventually outgrew that forum; it’s general ethos just wasn’t really congruent with where I was trying to go, but I learned a lot from it and remember it, and that particular mod, fondly.

Forums are weird. This place is the only place where I can talk to other people about lifting, as none of my mates are into it. I’ve also been posting here long enough to get to know the regulars, and I can talk to them like I would friends I’ve known for years. You know the way I talk weird, nonsensical shit on here? I’m exactly the same in real life, because that’s just how I am, and it’s how I behave around the people I’m comfortable with and care about.

I love you guys, I suppose is the point I’m trying to make. If you think I’m referring to you, then you’re right. I’m not going to name names because I’d be too worried I’d accidentally miss someone important out, but if you think you’d be on the list - you definitely are, and if you’re not sure then you probably are too. If you don’t think you’d be on the list then you probably don’t read my log anyway, so fuck you.

I’ve been drinking; I don’t know if that’s relevant. I’m not really a sentimental drunk but maybe tonight has caught me in a particularly whimsical mood.

Whatever the reason for my babbling, I want you guys to know that I consider you friends in just the same way as were I to have ever met you in person. You’re good people, and I am lucky to have the privilege of the banter with so many of you.

And my real name is Bob. You are my friends, so I think you should know that.

Hopefully it worked as a good medicinal application for your back.

I understand what you mean. Almost none of my hockey friends lift. I work in IT. My co-workers think I’m crazy.

Cheers,

I’ve never understood that. I’d think in a fairly physical sport like Hockey, they’d probably do some lifting. It’s even more crazy when I hear about Rugby players who don’t lift, at least half the game is people trying to drag each other to the ground. At least all American Football players lift, right?

If you’re in the tight five and you’re already reasonably strong arguably you won’t need much lifting because of how much pushing heavy stuff (mostly the opposing tight five) you do all the time. The recovery load of added lifting might even be sub-optimal.

It’s the backs and to an extent the loose forwards who need to lift because they don’t do as much moving heavy things as part of their on field role. Whether or not they do is another matter.

I get where you’re coming from. Point of diminishing returns from lifting and all. However, when some of the ruggers(youth national team) I’ve seen literally bench more than they squat, it’s a little ridiculous. Imagine a 120kgs bench with a 100kgs squat on a guy who is roughly 80-90kgs at the age of 19. No wonder we don’t win jack shit. I think the guy was a lock.

I remember reading somewhere online about the stats of some of the professional level ruggers and most of them squat in the 500lbs+ range.

You’re right. But, and I mean no offense by this, Singapore has no tradition of rugby at all that I’m aware of. Your big, fast and strong boys will gravitate towards more popular sports and rugby gets the leftovers. It’s like weightlifting and athletics here in Australia: rugby union, AFL and rugby league get the top talent, because that’s where the interest and money is.

Plus, the majority of decent and above rugby players in both codes tend to shift respectable weights because to get to that level you need to be big and strong. If you’re below 16, you probably won’t need much, if any, weight training because your training and rampant testosterone will pack on muscle (my experience). It’s once you hit 16+ that you’ll need to get bigger and stronger to get ahead.
