I know the meaning and acceptance of words can vary across geographical areas . Most black people in Canada are African immigrants and do not have a slavery background. You can say negress if it’s natural to you and deliver it properly. I grew up in Scarborough specifically an area called Malvern which is predominately brown and black. I am comfortable with this word and am not worried about usage causing me problems.
