Saw this Athlean-X workout doing the rounds:
Picked:
Decline pushups
Archers
Hindus
Twist from the toes
Double release
Abs: V-hold with scissors (I think I remember doing this as a contemporary dance technique exercise?)
To failure.
It’s definitely a workout! The feet-up-the-wall decline is a bit of a pig to set up - you may find you lose your grip on the wall before your arms fail. Oddly I didn’t feel it in the chest so much, so knocked out fifty stock pushups as the finish.
Today’s class with John Clifford:
this one is very technical and repays very close listening to his patter between exercises. I got to 1:23 before realising I didn’t have enough space - or turns - to go on. Also my gf told me my penchés aren’t high enough.
then got back to the Athlean-X thing. Discovery: using the cooker for decline push-ups = sick pump.
Is this thing still on? I haven’t died of the virus. I have been trying to do either the AthleanX workout or a class every day. I recently discovered Anna du Boisson’s absolutely ferocious midday class, which is really something. Girlfriend quote: “I like it when you’re facing the barre.”
Right - when she can stare at my ass. I’ll take the win there.
There is still no hint of when the gyms re-open here although my bit of London has had only 16 cases in the whole of June. So I’ve decided to move my workouts into the park and add in some sprinting - 10x 50m sprints to begin with.
Also, just right now I noticed that both Fitness Superstore and Amazon have kettlebells back in stock (first of those is cheaper), so a 24kg belle is on its way and the 10,000 Swing Challenge is on the horizon. Even if the gyms re-open, the government is talking about doing local shutdowns if there are new outbreaks, so I reckon having the means of my own torture might be handy.
Belle has arrived (UPS sent her to the wrong place - long story). 10k Swing Challenge is go!
For memory that’s:
10 swings
1 rep of some strength move
15 swings
2 reps
25 swings
3 reps
50 swings
4 reps
Timed rest
Repeat 4x
4x weekly, rotating the strength lifts
My plan for those is going to be:
Front squat
One-arm press (alternating)
Overhead squat
High pull
Week 1 - Workout 1
Today’s move: front squat
Time elapsed: 21 mins 32
Subjective experience: fuuuuck. Typing with one hand because my left hand is still shaking. This is a sweat drenched, breathe through your arse workout and I think my forearms have pumped
The day after: great, stretchy morning feeling? traps, forearms, hammies, lower back sore. Threw Anna du Boisson’s class in there; backbends are fine but the forward ones are a pain and just generally a bit off.
Still incredibly sore in the traps, hammies, and lower back. But this is a challenge. Workout 2, high pull, looked like it would end up about the same time but then the gf interrupted me for a couple of minutes before the last 50 rep set.
This was easier; beginning to feel the hip snap more and groove the exercise a bit better. Also I took it outside, used a wider stance, and wore trainers with a flat sole rather than a trail/running one.
The original challenge is just the swings
Huh? This is Dan John’s T-Nation article:

You are right, selective memory loss ![]()
Actually I was wondering if Belle was turning me into a himbo
Nina’s class was today. Challenging when you’re inhibited in bending forwards but after a few ports it warms up.
Monday was a rest day while I felt thoroughly tired and miserable. Today, it’s back to
much kettlebell
many fitness
so swinging
and workout 3 is done in 21mins 40. today’s move: squat. also I think I have cracked out the thing in my neck that was annoying me by grabbing a tree to bend all the way back.
OK so…I misread the program and did 4 clusters not 5…so sorry Belle…
anyway workout 4 today. all 5 this time! 29 mins 12. today’s move: one-armed press.
pressing is absurdly awkward with Belle.
I am going to add a spare workout at some point to fetch the three missing clusters
Update: I did Tamara Rojo’s recorded class #14 on Friday. Today, a challenge: Belle, and then Nina’s class.
Workout no.5. Swings and goblet squats. Job done in 23 minutes 08. Quite pleased with this.
Class was great too. Got called out for port de bras and also for fouetteing from front to arabesque, a difficult move in your front room
Tuesday: kettlebell swings, oddly enough. A big time PR; 21 mins 22.50. Today’s strength move: one-armed row, alternating.
