Again, this is a rumor. But it’s as credible or more so than speculation or guessing. This is what I expect a guy who just won a national championship and goes into a board of trustees meeting and demands upgrades in the library and academic facilities . They did rename the library after him. He’s donated 3.5 million plus to the university . And not football , academic facilities

So let’s see how the actual testimony goes and we’ll have that truth thing.
I think the above link is better served quoted in it’s entirety:

"If this rumor turns out to be true I will be extremely angry.

For the non-facebookers:
“the rumor mill says that the grand jury testimony shows (not appearing in the indictment since these are not facts relevant to the indictments of sandusky, cey, schultz) that 3 days after mcqueary’s meeting with cey/schultz, paterno followed up and was told that a full investigation was occurring. having heard nothing, approx. 3 months later, paterno followed up again and was told that the police and the DA were not going to pursue the matter. It is reported that Paterno’s reaction was one of anger and that he demanded that Sandusky be barred from campus. Paterno was told that he didn’t have that authority as the football coach. Paterno then said he was going to bar Sandusky from all football facilities and was told that he did have that authority. (4th hand from the AG’s office. Assign veracity accordingly.)”

Now, granted this is a “rumor”. It’s “speculation” no better than the speculation that I’ve been shooting down in this thread. However, the above scenario is EXACTLY why I stated I want to know what Joe knew and when - what was reported BACK to Joe, etc.

If the above rumor were true, and it doesn’t change your mind about Joe, you’re just intent on tearing down an icon for the sake of doing so.
What are the odds that that is a rumor created to help preserve Paterno’s legacy? Didn’t he just say he wished he’d done more? If Joe fucking Paterno doesn’t want you using his athletic facilities, then you better believe you’re not using the athletic facilities. This sounds fake as shit.

Exactly. My point is we will hear what went on from the trial. Questions will be answered . The rumor is as credible as any other form of speculation . It’s all a guess right now. That’s why it’s best to wait to fire people, especially cooperative witnesses not under indictment .

Let’s see now what happens with Syracuse . Maybe espn with their 200+ employees with degrees from Syracuse will exercise some restraint and try to report news, not make it with opinion and speculation . There will be more of these cases I’m both collegiate sports and pro sports .

Joe’s not God. His boss was Tim Curley. Joe had no power to ban Sandusky from part of his retirement package . That’s the way it is and was.

^^what? You honestly believe that Paterno had no say in who got into his athletic facilities? Paterno was by far the most powerful person at Penn State. If he told Curley to not allow Sandusky around, the Sandusky’s ghost. Anyone who believes otherwise is just being naive.

Why.

In a situation that was clearly handled improperly by the pres and AD, why is it hard to believe that they used their power to overrule Joe? It was kept completely internal. What was Joe to do if they just said “screw you, Im your boss”? It appears as if his only option may have been to blow the lid off and go to the media. Maybe he should have…

Exactly. This happened in 2002 not 1982. Joe was not the most powerful man on campus. He was very influential but he had bosses , spanier and Curley. There was no way he could gave told them to screw off then.

Explain how you’re going to alter a retirement package with no legal grounds?

For a state employee in the educational system? Maybe the should have just taken Sandusky’s health benefits from him or his pension? You know, the other parts of his negotiated retirement package .

c’mon. who’s being naive? the people that argue reasonably and recognize there are serious holes to what we know and say, “let’s be cautious and see what comes out” or, the guy that sees a boogeyman in every closet.

joe was powerful yes. but to claim that he could do whatever the hell he wanted, including incinerating emeritus rights and retirement rights, is being naive. and on top of being naive, you’re being stubborn.

it’s one thing to say “I think it will blow this way”. it’s quite another to completely ignore the irrefutable logical position tom, i and others have taken. and we’re simply saying, the story is incomplete, there are holes, and we do not know (yet).

we’re also saying, in so many words, that the man has lead by ALL ACCOUNTS a decent upstanding life. i do not believe in his “sainthood” or that he could do no wrong. but i do believe for him to turn a blind eye or to otherwise be complicit in the sexual abuse of minors is antithetical to the way the man lived his life…and that is yet another part of the story that just doesn’t add up…

most reasonable people, without the benefit of ALL THE FACTS, would say…“let’s wait and see about joe”. as for his “i wish i did more” comment i can imagine the man is horrified about the allegations…anyone in his shoes would wish they did MOAR with the benefit of HINDSIGHT.

now, i cannot explain it any better than that. you either “get it” or you don’t. no need to continue in circles.

dude, you’re reaching. nothing will help him save face except the facts coming out and being on his side. that’s it. he’s lost his job. it aint coming back. his legacy will be decided when all the facts are disclosed. the day is not won on a rumor…he’s 89 something years old. he knows that. he retained damn good legal counsel. they know that.

the rumor may not be true. but you are reaching.

Tom, it’s clear he has NO idea what he’s talking about as it concerns what Joe could or could not do with respect to Sandusky and his status as emiritus and his retirement package. the whole argument of “joe as god” is nonsensical. he was a hero. he was revered up there. he did not however run the university WHICH IS A STATE UNIVERSITY.

and i forgot; you’re also conveniently ignoring that Joe is a WITNESS FOR THE STATE. he’s not free to comment at this time as there is a case pending against his two superiors, both of whom he reported the damn incident to. they are the two accused of a cover-up and crime. not joe.

and did you just also conveniently ignore the DA’s office stating it was troubled by joe’s dismissal??

Explain what ‘more’ he could have done to usurp the power of HIS BOSSES? If the rumor is true.

Aside from going to the media and becoming a martyr essentially. Which I’ve already said sounds like it was a viable alternative.

two questions for BG:

1 - do you believe Paterno should still be active head coach of Penn State football? (I’m sure you stated your position but I can’t be bothered to scour the thread)

2 - can you tone down the condescension already?? (it’s a tired act, however typical on these boards)

Hrmmm Interesting…Paterno was preparing for the sex abuse scandal months ago by pre-emptively protecting his assets

Joe was 84 at that time. I’m guessing it’s more of protecting his assets from s nursing home than a civil suit . The BG has already addressed it.

I agree. Something is not quite right here. Joe Paterno – the model 'Captian of His Own Ship"…SUDDENLY has to report to a boss. He has to report to a boss regarding HIS turf, the Penn State football universe (Bullshit #1). Then after uncharacteristically having to do so, JoePa decides to ‘let go’ of the wheel to HIS ship because he did his job and reported it to his superior (Bullshit #2). If that were true, why was he fired? The proverbial Master Ship Captain delegated control and passed the buck? All the dots are not connecting here and we’ll just have to wait until all the facts flush out. Then, there’s sure to be books and a movie. Who do you think would make a good Joe Paterno? Sean Penn might work.

if you read the thread, you’d have your answer to number one, and you’d know that by now the condescension is richly deserved.

Still waiting on the moral outrage and ridiculous speculation about espn( who received information back in 2003 snout child molestation and did not alert the police), what did Jim Boheim know, what kind of investigation did syracuse conduct in 2005?

My answer is we need to get some facts. I expect those who think they could read between the lines or just guess well is to be just as goofy here.

Espn has approximately 200 graduates from Syracuse, one if the two top schools in broadcast journalism. Let’s see if the handle it the same way , or if we seem some prudence in their reporting .

Did anybody see the South Park episode last night that tore into Penn State?

This is fucking retarded. The “journalist” who is trying to connect those dots is a moron.

I have stayed out of this thread, because it is impossible for me to keep emotion out of my responses, but that trash from the NY Times of all places, should be burned, redacted, and removed from anyone’s mind.
