beachguy498’s comment reminded that for all the suits I tried on (multiple suits from 6 different stores), my jacket size was either 42 or 44". With the typical suit shoulder pad, it looks even wider. Now imagine pulling that down to a 31" at the waist. So ridiculous.
I was guilty of starting one of these threads, actually I was just asking for good places to get a suit and not gloating over my (almost-linkda) buffness as this thread seems to be about, so I will give you a real answer. By the way, 5’7" 180 with 46 suit jacket, 31" waist.
Go to stores that sell suit separates. Buy the appropriate size - though you might want to go a little bigger in the waist with the pants so your pant legs do not rub (assuming they might, if not, they should) plus you will be wearing a belt anyway. Then, get it tailored. Many of the newer suits are more deconstructed - less shoulder pads - or you can have the pads removed or changed for smaller pads. I went through this last summer. Suit fits fine and looks good. Total cost was somewhere around $300 - the suits separates where half off at the time.
And, quite trying to get the jacket to fit snug around your waist. A good tailor will tell you if you are asking for too much of a taper - which will also be somewhat dictated by the pattern/material/cut of the suit.
“Go to stores that sell suit separates.” >> Do you mean places where jacket and pants are sold separately? That was another issue I was having. They would have to take in the pants a lot if I bought them together.
The thing is, I have a couple suits from back in the days that fit okay. They are loose around the waist so it doesn’t look tight and fitted but it doesn’t look retarded either. I was shopping for the “power suit” that’s well fitted and tight to your body and moves the way you move type thing. The attention whore type suit for say you wanted to give a presentation to a table of executives.

Suit separates - jacket and pants sold individually. Stores like Macy’s, for example. That way pants do not have to be taken in.
I do not know what a power suit is. Can you plug your iPod into it? A good suit is not tight - it lays well and moves with you. I think you are looking for a power suit but expecting a deconstructed, I am worn by Zack Ephron, type suit. Two different things.
A well tailored suit will look better, at any price, than one that does not fit. “Fit” here is not tight. In fact, at your build you may not even look like you are athletic. (Suits hide mens’ figures well. Think about it, they accentuate the shoulders, hide the gut and draw the eye, via the tie, to your face. Pleats cover your ass.) The latest fashion in suits is a snug fit but a good suit should not scream the year and season you buy it. This is not the same suit you see on male models and young(er) actors at the moment (an earlier thread talked about how male models where suit jackets smaller than 40 now at 6ft. Anyone with some muscle on them will look silly in this.) If you really want a great lifetime type suit - one that flows and moves with you- ask around about tailors, go to higher end suit shops - Brooks Brothers, for example - and expect to have multiple fittings and spend enough money.
OR, follow the advice already given by me and others in this thread and the multiple like it in the achieves.
PS If you do not know how to get a suit to fit you probably do not have much reason for a power suit. If you are going to work somewhere where such a suit is needed, ask around at the office.
