I’m going to Ft. Lauderdale for vacation in 20 days, and heard through a friend of a friend that the Gold’s gym there is a pretty good gym. But since I don’t know this guy, I don’t know what he puts into the meaning of a good gym. Anybody here know how the Gold’s there’s like? Or is there other gyms in Ft. Lauderdale that’s better? And do you know how much I must expect to pay for one week’s training? Thanks.
Speaking of golds. My room-mate and I went for a temp trial membership at a new golds that opened up near us. Hell a week free why not.
So I get to Golds the meca of bodybuilding. Bubble gone Not this one.
So I walk in here is what they have.
Child care center (this is good for me)
Cardio fitness arcade? WTF?
Tons of hammer machines. I though ok nice touch where are the bb and db’s
I see 1/2 floor I am allowed in dedicated to cardio machines all layed out nice and neat. Where you can hook up your ipod and other gadets into. WTF are you here to sweat or get pampered.
Womens only section …i guess fatty patties and lezbos need to be insecure somewhere.
Then I see the worst thing in the world a cardio theater …where you watch movies when you run in your hamster wheel.
Private class rooms for yoga and body fit and spin classes.
MMA center with an octogon
Pool with a kids splash pad
Steam room and hot room.
I am still looking for the power racks bb and db’s
Finally at the end of the tour squished tightly into 1/4 of the open floor is the area for free weights. Tons of guys curling one squat rack. They had a great range of DB’s and no room to use them. Cause its 5-7 pm and to many people are there to work out.
I worked out 2 times got frustrated and when back to my hard core warehouse with mirrors and crap paintings of body builders. At least There is more then one set of BB a power rack. Chalk is encouraged to use. And if your in on good days you can watch the strong men use the atlas stones. WTF was I thinking.

It’s like driving on the Interstate late at night hungry - starving - ravenous - so hungry you start to hallucinate - and then you see the Golden Arches of McDonalds! You think to yourself “My God those have never looked so good!” You go in there, you order up the menu, you eat and all the hallucinations you had are now replaced with a bad case of the runs and breath that’d kill a fucking strung out junkie who hasn’t showered in three weeks
I moved away from Gold’s last September to a rinky dink gym up in Vt. I miss it a lot, best gym chain in Hampton Roads, VA. They (the one in Va beach) had lots of pics of muscle beach, old school body builders, and silhouettes of gigantic dudes. I am glad they didn’t have weak posters like you mentioned.
My commercial gym (24 hr fitness) is a mixed bag. There are some bigger guys, some cardio bunnies and only a couple jerks. None of the jerks are the big guys either. Usual complaints though: only 1 power rack and 1 squat rack (why did they make squat racks with the safety rails low enough only for 6’8" linemen?).
The bigger guys (people bigger than my tiny self) have all been pretty cool.
All posters on the wall are purely “reach for the stars” type BS.
i used to lift at a gold’s in portsmouth nh. it was alright, i got to use chalk (discreetly), there was a squat rack and 100lb dumbells. had a lot of machines, but decent benches and a t-bar row machine.
now though… haha i’m at bay state gym in worcester. great place! two power racks, squat rack, monolift, a bunch of old school machines, paintings of arnold and platz, pics of local bbers all over the place! atlas stones, kegs, sandbags, logs, ssb, cambered bar, buffalo bar, chalk boxes, chains, chest supported row machine, dbs to 160, oh man! and plenty of strong dudes. and farmer’s walk handles, bumper plates, grip implements, the list goes on. great gym, highly recommended.
