The specific programs I’m referring to were written in college for an asshole professor who decided that we needed to learn what it was like in the “good ol’ days.” So we used classic vi or emacs with no syntax coloring or highlighting, and command line compilers and debuggers (have you ever tried using GDB, it’s a pain in the ass). Honestly, if the school had still had a punch card machine, he’d have had us writing Fortran on cards. I now use a modern IDE with debugger, pretty syntax coloring, inline corrections, etc… every day at work, but I’m glad I can say that I remember the “good ol’ days” even though they were really before my time.
