World's Strongest Man General Discussion

Definitely better than the superbowl! My mom and I were watching the live stream and she asked… why isn’t this on TV? It’s better than that other shit on there! (She’s 78) lol

Man I LOVED this one. Thought it was the coolest, this is one of my earlier memories of strongman.

I wish Rogue would do a bit of editing. The individual events are often 45 - 60 minute YouTube videos. I think a video that was an hour or hour and a half for all of the events would get more people to watch. WSM has the final at about an hour after editing, and that seems about right for non-fanatics.

I saw a little clip where Thor was doing a Q A and was asked about the frame carry.

He’s not an excuse maker and all he said was that the frame felt to him like it was pulling to one side. He said I’m sure the weights were even and the staff there is great. didn’t know if maybe the timber on the frame was off and slightly heavier or if it was just him. Also said nobody finished the event on the frame he used which I didn’t notice during the actual comp but I’m assuming he’s correct. I haven’t seen anyone else’s comments that used the same frame as him. He still won so doesn’t matter.

I still think MK will get him in a couple years.

I just got around to investigating this.

Frame

I did ramps based on direction the Competitors were facing.

It would seem there was a huge advantage to being on the Right. I know 3-2 doesnt seem huge but if we look a smidge deeper. Thompson injured his forearm out of the gate and was also an Arnolds Rookie. Rob Kearny is 5-10 with small hands (his words) so this would not be his event, at all. He was also an Arnolds Rookie.

And like Thor said, nobody on the Left Ramp came close to finishing except for Thor. Also Belsak had issues with the same hand Thor did. Belsak is the ??? in the top line competing with Pritchett.

Good breakdown.

I hope this wasn’t the case but seems like there was something there for sure.

Idk how much variance it would take for something like that to effect the athletes that much. If it was that big a deal it speaks to thors abilities to be able to finish (nearly) the carry.

I find it hard to believe he wasn’t strong enough after he made 1000+ look light on dead event .

At the end of the day doesn’t matter just very interesting to me.

because he had straps on the deadlift. Let’s not forget he had grip issues when he did his powerlifting meet a year ago.

I don’t see any compelling evidence of an advantage on either side.

I don’t think it would have made a difference which side Mateusz was on. He just picked it up and practically ran with it. He would have won either way.

Agreed there

This could be the case. He’s just not an excuse maker. So I’m willing to give him the benefit of a doubt when he says something felt a little off.

Amazing athleticism for a 350 lb man (note -he does point out that the downward sloping hill makes it “easier”:

Then at the end of the workout, he proceeds to out sprint the 2 guys half his size, easily.

edit: start at 15:00, time stamp not working for some reason

Yeah the slope reduces the amount of ankle flexibly required. But it’s still something else.

He does have great stamina

I think you’re dead on here. When I was younger and would watch WSM on ESPN it was because they were doing cool things with stuff I could tell would be tough. The pushing/pulling giant things, picking up stones, etc. it’s what caught my eye. If they were just deadlifting a straight bar I would have probably not stopped.

Even on more straight forward events like the squat, things like this:

big-z

Look cooler than this:

(To those that dont understand density)

YES! It was awesome to watch! This ridiculous, humongous, impossible object being moved around felt so great. It looked like a boss in a video game, that the competitors were going to attack with an uncertain outcome. And I don’t know, it adds some kind of mythos, having this item from a movie like that, adds some fantasy and fun to a sport which is about demigods moving impossible weight, doing impossible feats.

For sure. Even at my level this is the case. I’ve had friends and family come to a handful of the shows I’ve competed in and I always here that their favorite events to watch are the really dynamic ones, like sandbag tossing, anything where people are racing head to head, and the crazy big weird objects. NOBODY gives a shit about barbell deadlifts, lol.

Except Eddie and Thor. Of course.

Screw all you guys, I love watching the deadlift.

You see, this is why powerlifting isn’t a huge spectator sport, all the weights tend to look the same - and this is coming from a powerlifter!
