I have some old university buddies who’re really into this game. I bought the game to support a friend of mine who works at Blizzard, but (thankfully) because of lifting, I don’t spend as much time on it as the author of the piece.
I have played Warcraft since Warcraft 2 in 1995. I was waiting for WOW to come out and when it did I was there to buy it. I played for a little over a year.
Then I sold my character on Ebay for $500.00. I went out and bought a new game, got him to top level, and got totally bored with the game because Blizzard, the maker of the game, keeps changing all the shit on all the characters. Fuck Blizzard!
The only reason I still have the game is because my son loves it.
If Blizzard din’t release an incomplete game, and continue to develop it after release, drastically changing the characters, it would have been a decent game and I would still be playing my original character I sold.
I used to play. But it sucks because unless you play for like 10 hours a day your character sucks. Those games are made like that so people keep paying.
You can spend a while getting to the top level. But once you got there people with better Items could run along and kill you in one hit. You can’t compete unless you do the time.
Some of the dungeons in the game took like 2 days and 40 or so people to complete. Granted it’s not two straight days, however a friend of mine is known to spend 5 or 6 hours playing in a group like that.

It’s pretty retarded.
Yea, skill plays no role in the game. Its all about time, and having a good team to play with.
I have been on 8-10 hour 40 man raids in Molten Core. 40 people in there that long, all on team speak. For a group of 40 people in a video game, it was very organized.
But, yea it’s all about how many hours you put in. You need to play at least like 40 hours a week to be in the top.

I’m sorry to hear about your buddies. I’m sure they lived a great life.
Too bad it got them. They were too young! DAMNIT! Why are the young ones the first to go?!
I played wow for a few months, I really saw nothing special about it that would make me play it for hours. I mean it’s fun, but I have no idea how people get so addicted…
If anyone has played ultima online, they know that game is the real addiction. At least it was for me back in the day.

LOL. It’s a game. You play it because it’s fun… what’s all this obsession about being at the top levels and so forth?
I’ve tried to get into it a couple of times, but my game addictions only run for a few weeks.
By then I found there was too much time consuming travel… and it got too hard unless you were willing to group up.
Guess that’s the price you pay for being a loner.
Well the game is fun untill you get to the top levels. Once you get to the top levels the only fun stuff is doing the huge 40 man dungeons. You however need to play A LOT to be in group that can do those sucessfully. Not only that you need to have certain items to do those dungeons and you be picked to go unless you have them.
The other fun thing to do is compete against other players in combat, of course its not like a first person shooter where you pick up a gun and shoot people. To compete against other players, you almost have to have the best armor and weapons, which brings you back to the 40 man dungeons.
Thats why its no fun unless your in the top. That takes a very long time to achieve.
To be honest I stopped playing for work, I used to spend well over 6 hours a day on video games. I dont miss it.
I started playing the day after Xmas last year and thankfully I just sold my account the day after Xmas this year for a few hundred bucks and I have to say…it was not worth my time at all once I hit level 60. The game is way too gear-oriented, and the raids take up far too much time. I totaled up 50 played days or so and if you do the math out, that’s about 3.5 hours a day. 50 days of your life on a video game is not what it should be all about, but that’s part of the reason why Blizzard is making a killing.
They have over 7 million paying customers of WoW now. Unlike Guild Wars, this game requires a HUGE investment of time just to be able to keep up with the best-geared on the server (gear = skill).
When working on new content, I sometimes did 6 or 7 hour stints of raiding with 39 other people late at night. It killed both my grades as well as my social life. Finally, I got the brains to sell my account for about 600 dollars. Doing that out I made…2 dollars an hour.
Yep, 2 mangy bucks an hour playing a game that I stopped enjoying when I hit 60 (although I played for 37 more total days after that). I could’ve gotten a real job and made 18,000 dollars instead if i had invested my time in that rather than the silly game. People in my guild played the game like it was their job, and oftentimes they didn’t even have a real life one. Freshman year of college really sucked with WoW being a major player in my life, let me tell ya.
A word to the wise for all you Warriors, Paladins, Shamans, Priests, Mages, Warlocks, Rogues, Hunters, and Druids out there…quit before Tuesday!!!

That’s ridiculous! I never knew spending your days with whinny 12 year olds complaining about raids/groups/etc was worth that…

That is exactly what killed it for me. Also waiting around for groups and then joining a bunch of flakes was infuriating.
This game really brings out the worst in some people, but it can be fun up to a point.
