World Cup 2010 Thread

Hank Hill: Bobby, I didn’t think I’d ever need to tell you this, but I would be a bad parent if I didn’t. Soccer was invented by European ladies to keep them busy while their husbands did the cooking.
Bobby Hill: Why do you hate what you don’t understand?
Hank Hill: I don’t hate you Bobby!
Bobby Hill: I was talking about soccer.
Hank Hill: Oh yeah, I hate soccer.

HAH! Yeah Messi just does “tap ins”

Messi is a kid wonder. He’s #1 because he has his own style, no one plays like him. Xavi is great, so is Rooney, even Ronaldo - technically they’re all impressive, but they lack Messi’s gusto.

That was filthy.

Argentina, Mexico, Italy… those are my favorite teams… Iran when they make it. 98 sits as my favorite year for Iran :stuck_out_tongue:

7 more days mother f*ckers!!

And to get everyone in the mood…

who does it better?

^^^ First movie was awesome, except for the fact that Ronaldinho was in it and didn’t even make the team.

I think Italy will repeat. Anyone going to the games?

Man Ronaldinho has just been spiraling downhill… I don’t even get what happened.

The flashing lights blinded him and he stopped focusing on soccer, it’s as simple as that. Some people just can’t maintain an elite level of play when they are being put on such a high pedestal by fans, media, and endorsers.

FUCK ENGLAND, GO YANKS!

I would be fine with that.

The unfortunate thing about being English in the States is that if our lads win, I get no glory- I mean it’s bound to happen. On the other hand, if the inverse proves true, then I’m right fucked. Ughhh.

That being said: FUCK YEAH ENGLAND

Bookies have it like this:

Spain: 4/1
Brazil: 9/2
England: 13/2
Argentina: 7/1
Holland: 11/1
Germany: 14/1 (lower than I expected)

USA: 66/1
North Korea: 2000/1

So Rio Ferdinand has a knee injury that will keep him out of the WC. His likely replacement is either Upson or King, neither of which I know anything about. Is this a really significant injury for England? Does the US now have a much better chance in the first match?

Rio Ferdinand is shit. He’s always injured anyway and is constantly making stupid mistakes. King would be my choice over him anyway, though he isn’t without faults himself. Still don’t think USA stand a chance against England

Saying one of the best defenders in the world is shit is probably a bit of an exaggeration, he has had a bad season and seems to be getting more injury prone as he gets older. I agree that it doesn’t change that much though. Any of Upson, King, Dawson or Carragher have proven good enough to keep a team of the US level quiet. The difference in quality with the replacements should really only become apparent against world-class opposition.

Edit: Also there is more to a player than just his performance on the pitch (around the middle BBC Sport - Football - Rio Ferdinand is a big loss - Frank Lampard)

One of the best defenders in the world? No way. He’s a big name. Not been any much for a long time.

Centre back is a position I’ve felt England has had troubles in for a while. The sound of Rio Ferdinand and John Terry is really nice, but we still concede plenty of goals with them playing. Ledley King is decent but I think coming off an injury, I don’t rate Matthew Upson on a world stage.

I think our defense will be fine against teams like USA who don’t really have any world class forwards, but it won’t stand up to the Spains and Brazil’s of the tournament.

Not sure what’s in that link but it’s not working.

I’m kinda disillusioned with the world cup in general. It’s always the same in England. We always think we’re gonna win no matter who we send. Our team is quite good, but theyre chronic underachievers and never really play well together. My guess is that Wayne Rooney will get injured in the group stage, a nation mourns.

Club football for life.

Bets on (Tournament-wise)
Top Goal Scorer:
Top GK (Lowest goal/shots on frame ratio or subjective):
Fewest Goals Against:
Best Goal off of Set Piece (subjective-obviously):

???

Villa is at 9 to 1 I think for top goalscorer. That’s good odds for him.The rest are impossible to call I think, with the exception of Germany/Italy for least goals against.

Very little gets by Gigi Buffon.

Right on. I was just looking to have a little fun with it. In that spirit, here’s mine:

Goals: Fernando Torres (wishful thinking prob)
GK: Julio Cesar (I want to say Casillas, but just can’t)
Fewest GA: Italy (“Smothering” is a good analogy)
Best goal of SP: Xavi

Hopefully in a month this should have read: Dempsey, Howard, US, Donovan. We shall see
