Well, having lifted for quite a number of years I’ve lifted with every sort of partner and no partner. I imagine this is somewhat individual, but here’s what I’ve found most effective over the years:
- Motivated partner(s)
- No partner
I’ve found that partners who aren’t committed will only drag you down and should be avoided like the plague.
Some of the best progress I’ve ever made in the gym was when I had two partners of roughly the same strength. The three of us were in competition to see who could do the most reps, etc. We pushed each other to the limit and beyond, had killer workouts and tons of fun.
So yeah, like someone said, good partners are hard to find - but I think they’re worth finding.
Right now I have a very committed, non-juicing partner, but unfortunately he is in the process of losing 80 lbs (60 lost so far) so it’s tough in that he isn’t getting much stronger while running a caloric deficit.
I should also add that in addition to the commitment, ideally you want someone close to you in strength, goals, etc. It’s the whole idea of competition that can push things to the next level. If you’re motivated to stay ahead of someone stronger than you, pick a weaker partner, if you’re motivated by trying to catch up, pick a stronger one.
I always try to get around people that are bigger/stronger/smarter than me so that I can learn from them.
That said, you can learn from anyone. Everyone has something they excel at and that you can learn from, whether they are begging for spare change or washing your windshield.
The other side of the coin is learning from other people what not to do. Wow, I better shut up, seem to have gotten off on a tangent.
