Woman Giving Letters to 'Overweight' Kids

FARGO, N.D. - (KVLY) A North Dakota woman stated her intentions to take childhood obesity into her own hands during a radio interview on Tuesday.

She said has decided to give a letter instead of candy to Halloween trick or treaters that she feels are “moderately obese.”

“I just want to send a message to the parents of kids that are really overweight… I think it’s just really irresponsible of parents to send them out looking for free candy just 'cause all the other kids are doing it,” says the author in a Y-94 morning radio interview.

That’s where the letter first surfaced and started to spread through social media.

“They were chatting today and got a call from Cheryl out of the blue who really wanted to voice her opinion about obesity and that it really takes an entire community to solve the obesity challenge,” says Y-94 Program and Music Director JT.

“I’m contributing to their health problems and really, their kids are everybody’s kids. It’s a whole village,” says the letter’s author in the interview.

NDSU Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology Dr. Katie Gordon studies eating disorders and says that children and adolescents in particular are very conscious of fitting in with peers. She says the letter might hurt more than help.

"It’s just that kind of thing that for some kids, if they’re vulnerable, might trigger major problems,"she says.

Gordon leaves the matter of an individual child’s weight to his or her parents and pediatrician. She says that one should be careful to judge by another’s appearance and doesn’t believe the letter will have the desired effect.

“That’s not something that someone can judge- the health of someone- just by looking at them. I think that’s the main thing. Even if a child is overweight, they might be very healthy because of what they eat and how they exercise,” says Dr. Gordon. “It’s ineffective anyway because it’s not likely to help the kid,” she says.

Ya I saw this, what a cunt.

Unfortunately, Dr. Gordon is probably right. The letter will likely hurt, more than help. The parents will more than likely be so upset at someone calling out their kid, they will automatically go into defense mode, whether they know it to be true or not. People hate being called out, especially with something as personal as their kids, or worse yet, their parenting!

The letter won’t have much impact on the children either. Kids that young seldom have the discipline to change habits on their own. If their parents aren’t their guiding them (if they were they most likely would be very overweight) making the appropriate changes won’t happen. They will likely just think, wow, what a crappy person not handing out candy!

There needs to be more community forums on the problem. Attack it like smoking. Everyone knows the risks of smoking. Some still chose to do it. You won’t change those people, but smoking overall is down. Attack childhood obesity the same way. Obviously it won’t solve all the issues, but it will help. And for the love of God, fix school lunches in an intelligent way. The processed crap they serve is insane.

I predict doused with pitch and flaming arrows fired at it.

X2 on her being a cunt.

I don’t see the problem. If the fat kids don’t want to take her letter, they don’t have to.
It doesn’t sound like she’s getting in their face about it, name-calling or anything.
Not addressing the issue is worse IMO.
She might not be addressing the problem in the most effective means, but I do think she has a point about giving already overweight/obese kids candy that they can’t afford to be eating with respect to their health.

Seems like there is never an appropriate time to have the “fat-talk” shall we call it.
Continually avoiding the issue has led to having 1 in 5 kids be obese.
Clearly leaving it up to the (probably overweight/obese) parents hasn’t been working.
So how do you think this issue is best tackled?

She is singling out children on and only on Halloween. If she thinks candy is bad for kids, no problem, turn your porch light off and don’t give candy out. All she is doing is embarrassing kids, what, 12 and under.

The “Fat Kid Talk” can and should be had now by adults not by passive aggressively calling kids fat in front of their friends.

The fat talk? How about she roll up on an adult in the street and preach instead of giving out little notes to kids. What the fuck? What should the parents then turn around and send back notes with the word “bitch” on it. This chick is being a coward and using kids to deliver a message she is afraid to tell the parents face to face…

She is a racists bully. Probably voted for Obama. Sorry this is not PWI.

haha, this thread is priceless. You can hear the screams over here.

A country has truly failed when it see’s no problem in easy access to violence on the TV, movies, video games etc, blaming those very things for mass shootings etc but WHOA WE CANT TELL FAT KIDS THEY ARE FAT! No that would take a shit load of logic, something the Muricans cant handle these days.

Why is the USA so easily led to its death? Your lifestyle has infected the world and here we are, some people dole out letters (not the best adivce) to kids who get blamed for being violent and put on drugs, but being fat? Oh okaaay, its “normal”.

Stop shirking your responsibilities. You will come to pay for this gluttony one way or the other and I dont know how seeing as you cant even afford basic medical aid for the entire population.

It’s not about the kids’ feelings in this case.

It’s about Halloween being one day out of the year the kids look forward to and then pissing on their parade. Hell, at least hand a note AND candy?

But you’re right that America is too sensitive about discussing or commenting on weight.

I agree with turning off the fucking light and leaving little kids alone to celebrate their holiday or not, as their parents decide. What an asshole. God, it makes me ragey.

Great, this thread has given me PMS and now I want to kill someone.

It’s a failed strategy. In the 70’s and 80’s we used to chase fat kids with sticks and roll them down hills. What did they do? They got fatter and now there are more of them. If they had the energy they would be ganging up on and beating up the normal kids now. Hell, with their size now it only takes one of them to gang up on a skinny kid.

Naaaaaah, those fat kids will be pissed but by the time they get back home for the eggs and TP they’ll be exhausted and too out of breath to walk all the way back.

“We’ll just get her next year.”

As much as this is blatant trolling I do agree with some of your points lol

It has gotten ridiculous these days. It’s ok for planet fitness to make commercials making fun of bodybuilders and fitness women but it a company made a commercial making fun of fat people or smokers it would be HUGE news.

So much hypocrisy in the world and “fat” seems to be a huge off limits zone.

With that being said, addressing the children themselves is not a good idea. In 99% of the cases (a number I made up just now) it is the parents fault and not the children. The parents should be addressed. The parents are the ones teaching their kids bad eating habits.

If you truly are a health nut and want to help the childrens then pass out rice cakes or raisins or some other crappy food that no one will eat.
